So....whaddya guys think for Friday the 13th 10at10? Hits From Hell (NO!) or....a set about LUCK? (yes!)

So far there's 2 comments replying to Dave -- me and another guy  -- both demanding HFH!  I told Dave to do the "luck" set for St Patrick's, like he used to do back in the day.

"I'm just not feelin' it this year... I'm a little scared of the concept, suddenly", sez Dave regarding Hits From Hell.

WTF?!?

Maybe he "just wasn't feelin'" the Xmas Card concept last month either.

But I can only condone the "luck" idea if the TOTHC is Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes' "Bad Luck," parts 1 AND 2.

Maybe our harping on him for annually recycling the same songs for Tax Day, Pride, and Halloween has had the unintentional effect of putting him off the recurring sets that we actually like.

Joan Armatrading, "Walk Under Ladders"... Stevie, "Superstition"...  It could actually be a much better set than just 10 songs with "luck" in the title (as it would have to be on St Pat's Day). Of course, we'd also get Wings, "With a Little Luck". I'd still prefer HFH.
Title: 13 Jan 2006-Friday the 13th
Post by: RGMike on January 11, 2006, 10:51:50 AM
There are now 11 comments on Dave's blog, 10 of which favor HFHs.  (the 11th is actually a good suggestion for "superstition" songs, which I like better than "luck")

One guy suggested "Strictly Instrument-HELL".  I REALLY like that one!

But that censorship software on the blog replies has gotta go -- it actually censors the "tit" in "Supers(tit)ion"!

Must go chime in with a vote for HFH.
With a little luck.... we can work it out.

I posted and someone already posted after me. the *ass* was removed from Cassidy. heh heh. They said ass.

The people have spoken!! It's an HFH Vertical Tasting, '75 to '84.

Dave on why he was anti-HFH this time: "I just decided 10 bad songs in a row is bad radio". To which Greg replied: "You just figured that out now, after doing HFH for 20 years??" LOL!

So if he's starting in '75, then no "The Streak."  But "Disco Duck" in '76 is a distinct possibility.

And we wrap things up just before "Tarzan Boy" would've been eligible.

Tarzan Boy's no HFH -- it's pop brilliance!

But I betcha we lead off with "Convoy" for Alicat.

Cool, we can have a sing-a-long.  And to that purpose, I enclose the following for when we get there (and we almost certainly will):

Mr. Roboto

Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto,
Mata ah-oo hima de
Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto,
Himitsu wo shiri tai

You're wondering who I am-machine or mannequin
With parts made in Japan, I am the modren man

I've got a secret I've been hiding under my skin
My heart is human, my blood is boiling, my brain I.B.M.
So if you see me acting strangely, don't be surprised
I'm just a man who needed someone, and somewhere to hide
To keep me alive-just keep me alive
Somewhere to hide to keep me alive

I'm not a robot without emotions-I'm not what you see
I've come to help you with your problems, so we can be free
I'm not a hero, I'm not a saviour, forget what you know
I'm just a man whose circumstances went beyond his control
Beyond my control-we all need control
I need control-we all need control

I am the modren man, who hides behind a mask
So no one else can see my true identity

Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto, domo...domo
Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto, domo...domo
Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto, domo...domo
Thank you very much, Mr. Roboto
For doing the jobs that nobody wants to
And thank you very much, Mr. Roboto
For helping me escape just when I needed to
Thank you-thank you, thank you
I want to thank you, please, thank you

The problem's plain to see: too much technology
Machines to save our lives. Machines dehumanize.

The time has come aat last
To throw away this mask
So everyone caan see
My true identity...
I'm Kilroy! Kilroy! Kilroy! Kilroy!

Note that our last HFH Vertical Tasting was also '75 thru '84:

75 - Thank God I'm a Country Boy
76 - Shannon
77 - How Much Love (Leo Sayer)
78 - Let's All Chant
79 - In the Navy
80 - Lost in Love
81 - Morning Train
82 - Ebony & Ivory
83 - Mr. Roboto
84 - Footloose

I'm betting we hear almost all of those, if not all, given Dave's lack of enthusiasm.

From the intro, it sounds like Dave's HFH aversion might be from having to debate Fogheads ad nauseam on whether a particular song is a HFH or a guilty pleasure.

Carpenters' Please Mr. Postman--def. HFH.

Per Allmusic/Billboard, YLUML hit number one on the Adult Contemporary and Pop Singles charts and number four on the Country Singles chart...in 1977. But if I was counting correctly, it came up as song #4, which would put it in the 1978 slot for the set.

Thay is fuckin' weird, even for Dave -- he's never played either on 10@10 but he plays 'em on the morning show!

I was wondering about that--but I thought 78 was about the right year for this one. Some research/explanation is required.

Per Allmusic/Billboard, YLUML hit number one on the Adult Contemporary and Pop Singles charts and number four on the Country Singles chart...in 1977. But if I was counting correctly, it came up as song #4, which would put it in the 1978 slot for the set.

Good ol' Dave--no rules are hard and fast.

Well, it was definitely still charted in Jan '78 -- orig released in Aug '77 and it was #1 for 10 friggin' weeks!  Still wondering about that version, tho'.  Maybe the original's out-of-print.

And the Neil Diamond songs were requested. Dave had a Neil reqiest-o-rama TWIN SPIN!

As one of Dave's most obnoxious critics -- I must give credit where credit is due. That was one of the best HFHs I can recall.  And when you condider he limited himself to being date-specific, nothing short of incredible.  Kudos!

Annalisa's Bonus HFH: she looked at the Jan 1985 chart and chose "Like A Virgin" -- but instead of playing Madonna's version, she's playing Lords of the New Church's hilarious send-up. And she didn't even play the whole thing!

I missed the set, but did Dave play Kasey Cisyk's version of YLUML?  She was originally supposed to have the hit with it, but when Debby Boone's version got all the attention, Kasey settled for a #80 chart hit.  I've only heard her version once.

The Leo Sayer was a misstep; he did far worse than "More Than I Can Say" ("Long Tall Glasses," anyone?).  For 1980, you've got the Christopher Cross songbook (I dig, but many others don't, and that's OK).  1981 I would have gone with Stars on 45 if it fit the date.

It was indeed Debbie -- a remake, apparently -- but Dave acknowledged the emails questioning the version.  Poor Kasey... where is she now? (or, for that matter, where's Didi Conn?)

This week in 1981, Mr Sayer was joined in the Top 10 by:

"Love on the Rocks", Neil Diamond
"Every Woman in the World", Air Supply
"Lady", Kenny Rogers

So Dave had his pick of hellish tunes.

(AND: also on the Hot 100 and fading fast... "What Do You Give a Wookie For Xmas?")
