Arguably the single greatest human being of the late 20th century.

I just composed a long email asking Renee to do a memorial set tomorrow, but whether she does or not, you should check out this great song by a relatively obscure group called Latin Quarter "No Rope As Long As Time":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCHO-lagGkU

it really captures what apartheid was, and contains the line “Mandela in the prison, Biko in the ground, Sharpeville & Soweto voices silenced till the end of time.”

See also Johnny Clegg & Savuka "Asimbonanga (We Haven't Seen Him)"

Song was recorded about halfway through Mandela's incarceration, and in this performance from 1999, Mandela joins them on stage.

It would be wonderful if she did (and would also have to include "Sun City").   I suspect a "Concert for Kids" 10@10 is already planned, but we can dream.

Sun City was on my list.

I studied So. African history in grad school, and as an undergrad in 1984 led a sit in prior to a Board of Regents meeting to get the university to divest from companies doing business with the apartheid government.  We were eventually successful.

Actually Renee just replied to my email:

Thanks, I hope you heard my tribute at 2:15. We will be rolling out songs to celebrate this great man. THNK for the note, I'm enroute to a fundraiser.

Sent from my jiggy mobile device.

I hadn't heard the news yet at 2:15...anyone know what she played?

Looking at KFOG's TuneGenie playlist, Renee played:

The Specials "Free Nelson Mandela"
Bob Marley "Redemption Song"

later Webster played "Sun City" and something else that momentarily escapes the mind.
