Early BOS to Donovan, hm to the eternal 68 katrina, Grazing in the grass, which I heard in a car wash last weekend.

BOS2 Eric Burdon, Sky Pilot. The l-o-o-o-ong version? Hope so!

BOS, Sky Pilot.

At my Aunt's funeral a couple of weeks ago, I made it through okay until the bagpipes (Amazing Grace).  Teared up pretty good then.  My cousin got up and said, "Sorry about that.  That was supposed to cheer everyone up."  Not a dry eye in the place.

RIP, Aunt Jean.  Great lady.

A swell start, but I really don't like "Sky Pilot".  Bad singing and dumb lyrics.  I dig the whole band playing through a phaser, though.

It's a big dumb overwrought piece, no doubt.  Partly why I love it.

I think I'll ask for it on Thanksgiving, it's just a wonderful Turkey.

"dumb lyrics" ... wow.  Guess you had to be there, but as Dave would say "a VERY important record in its time". There was an unpopular war on, and the lyrics struck VERY close to home.  So much so that the record was banned by many radio stations.

OK, I'm really on the edge now. "turkey" implies dumb stupid and/or goofy. "Sky Pilot" is anything but. Dated, perhaps (tho' given our current prez's love of war, maybe not). But not stupid. No.

Yup. "Yesterday's Dreams" not one of their big hits but one of their loveliest perfs, and I know a Gaz fave too.

sky  pilot

He blesses the boys as they stand in line
The smell of gun grease and the bayonets they shine
He's there to help them all that he can
To make them feel wanted he's a good holy man
Sky pilot.....sky pilot
How high can you fly
You'll never, never, never reach the sky

He smiles at the young soldiers
Tells them its all right
He knows of their fear in the forthcoming fight
Soon there'll be blood and many will die
Mothers and fathers back home they will cry
Sky pilot.....sky pilot
How high can you fly
You'll never, never, never reach the sky

He mumbles a prayer and it ends with a smile
The order is given
They move down the line
But he's still behind and he'll meditate
But it won't stop the bleeding or ease the hate
As the young men move out into the battle zone
He feels good, with God you're never alone
He feels tired and he lays on his bed
Hopes the men will find courage in the words that he said
Sky pilot.....sky Pilot
How high can you fly

You'll never, never, never reach the sky
You're soldiers of God you must understand
The fate of your country is in your young hands
May God give you strength
Do your job real well
If it all was worth it
Only time it will tell

In the morning they return
With tears in their eyes
The stench of death drifts up to the skies
A soldier so ill looks at the sky pilot
Remembers the words
"Thou shalt not kill"
Sky pilot.....sky pilot
How high can you fly
You never, never, never reach the sky

Time it was, and what a time it was...

10-way tie, a "classic" set that deserves the name. OMG! "Back-Up Train", Al Green's first "hit" (I believe it peaked just under the Top 40).

Sorry, Mike.  Didn't mean to strike a nerve there.  The subject matter is certainly relevant, now as then.  That being said, when Eric holds that "Sky....." note out, it makes me cringe.  So who is the Sky Pilot?  Is he a chaplain, or God, or just some sort of spirit?

BOS for Sunshine of Your Love, even though it's a majorly overplayed tune.

Indeed, he's supposed to be a military chaplain.  Mr Burdon's not exactly the greatest vocalist ever, I'll grant you that.

Pretty clever of those Brits to use a name that make's 'em sound American.

Indeed, and an odd record to release in 1968. Kind of a throwback. And I've asked this before, but did the Partridge Family ever cover this song? 'cause they sure should've.

Glad I'm not the only one that hears strains of Keith and Shirley in this--it's most certainly the blueprint for their sound. Wes Farrell was stealin' with both hands....

Bush was not even close, sky pilot was the slang for the army chaplain, an active duty guy at the front with the troops, like Father Mulcahy.

My dad was nicknamed that by the youth group kids in the congregation he served in Falls Church, VA, from '67-'70.  Most of these kids were total hippies, while most of their dads worked at the Pentagon or the CIA.  The senior pastor of the church was a retired Navy chaplain, who had achieved the rank of Vice Admiral, then (& I believe to this day) the highest rank ever achieved in any branch of the armed forces by a chaplain.  He was the hardest of hard asses.

I'm so delighted that you know my tastes so well.  Indeed, big ol' BOS for the Tops, some of their most prominent (and intricate) backing vocals, the whole arrangement isn't that far removed from their supper-club days.  Divine.
