Febreze + George Benson = Febreezin'
Charmin + Outkast = Toilet Tisha
and so on...
-
John Lennon + Louis Rich = Cold Turkey
I also envisioned a commercial with Ace Frehley offering his support to the NY mayoral campaign of Michael Bloomberg: "I'm back! - backin' a New York Jew ..."

ROTFL!
I always thought "Love Is Like An Itchin' in My Heart" would be great for selling Vagisil...
-
Outkast + Mr. Clean = Mr. Fresh and Clean
Traffic + Garbage Containment = GladBags
Squeeze + Friskies = Cool for Cats

I guess this thread will work for this.
Meatloaf's "I Will Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)" is used to pretty good effect in a Dr. Pepper add I saw the other day. Basically, a guy doing all kinds of romantic stuff with his girlfriend, only to balk at sharing his Dr. Pepper with her.
Pretty well done, and made a lot more sense than the Meatloaf video...
-
and then there's Sir Paul's commercial for Fidelity...

feh. at least *she'll* be getting the royalties. methinks that's one of the two songs on the album she co-wrote.
-
The Airplane's "Volunteers" strikes again -- this time for Tommy Hilfilger.
which always remingds me of the Spike Lee parody, from Bamboozled: Timmy Ill-Nigga.
-
"Daydream Believer" is now an e-Bay commercial (part of the new "it" campaign).
oh, yeah, it's the Monkees version, not Anne Murray.
-
This doesn't involve a specific song, but it makes me very sad to report that Queen Latifah is appearing in a commercial for the evil Wal-Mart.

Queen Latifah Muu-Muu's for the big-boned gal!
It's a spot with Queen L & her mother (or an actress playing her mom) Xmas shopping at da 'Mart. The Pizza Hut voice-overs are bad enough -- sheesh, Latifah, if yer gonna sell out, at least go upscale!

"The Dana Owens Album" didn't pay for itself. And Teef isn't ready to shill for Olivia cruises ... yet.
"Who you callin' a thick?"

A cover of Elvis C's "Pump it Up" is being used to shill some video game website. First time I've heard one of his songs in a commercial.
-
Cher's "Song For the Lonely" is now a Weight Watchers commercial.
-
The UPS Store is using Stevie's "Don't You Worry 'bout a Thing".
-
Meant to post this last week--Target has co-opted Max Frost and the Troopers' "Shape of Things to Come."
Honest ta god.

Yes! I saw that. more $$$ for Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil.

TANC: apropos of Gaz's comments about the song earlier this week, Macca's "Fine Line" is now a commercial for the new Lexus hybrid. So which is more annoying? This, or Kermit doing "Bein' Green" for the Ford Escape hybrid?

I vote for the latter--the Macca song is brand new and not of any particular sentimental value to most people. Meanwhile, Bein' Green holds a significant memory for most of us who grew up with Sesame Street. I'm fine with Van Morrison and Frank Sinatra doing it, but hearing it used for hawking cars somewhat grates.
But I guess the whole point of this thread is that NO SONG is out-of-bounds for commercial exploitation. Guess we just better get used to that.
THPBPBPBPBPBPBP!
(That was a Bronx cheer, if you couldn't tell.)
-
Inevitable, I suppose... but the Psy Furs' "Pretty in Pink" is shilling the new Pink Razr phone.
-
The oft-covered (Robert Knight, Love Affair, Carl Carlton, Rachel Sweet & Rex Smith, U2, Gloria Estefan, Jamie Cullum...) "Everlasting Love" is being used to flog Pringles.

I had help from the British Chart db. I'd forgotten about Gloria.

Just saw the commercial for Kraft's new "Crumbles" -- bags of little bitty cheddar chunks. And the song they've appropriated for the sales pitch? EMF's "Unbelievable" -- transformed into (yes) "Crum-believable".
Cheezy in more ways than one...
-
no music, just monkeys. anyone notice how many advertisements feature monkeys these days? i saw one last night: a bunch of people made up as monkeys dressed in suits, beating on laptops, trying to eat the laptops, jumping on the laptops...then one monkey man logs onto ask jeeves! and starts reading the site. then he transforms into a human. the tagline: "use tools. feel human." i have no idea if it was an ask jeeves! ad, or a microsoft ad, but it was a little strange....
-
Homer Simpson: (watching a chimp scratch its ass on a tree) Sooo like us....
-
Grand Funk's version of "Some Kind of Wonderful" is now selling Kraft Mayo.
-
OK, now that I've seen that damn KFC commercial a total of, like, 352 times, I must ask the nagging question: What does "Sweet Home Alabama" have to do with Kentucky Fried Chicken? I know those ad agency people do a LOT of coke, but really...

KFC specifically doesn't want to be thought of as "Kentucky Fried Chicken" anymore, and if they can further the dissociation in any way, they'll try it.

Parker Posey in a Pepsi commercial? with Jimmy Fallon??
Isn't this a sign of the apocalypse?

so can Ray.
Saw an IBM commercial last night that used a cover (don't know who) of the Kinks' I'm Not Like Everybody Else.
Just remembered that this is not the first Kinks song to be co-opted this way--Picture Book turned up in that HP campaign last year.

I don't know if it's good advertising, but I kinda dug it when I saw it!

No music involved, but i just saw a commercial for a new cellular calling plan called My Circle, featuring lookalikes for the Sprint Guy, the "can you hear me now?" guy and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Paging poc!
-
now selling Ritz crackers: "I'll Melt With You".

Dave Matthews' "Stay" is being used by the Virginia Tourist Board. Shouldn't they be using Bruce Hornsby?

I had to google that to find out WTF it was -- a Dunkin Donuts commercial, apparently. They don't advertise out here.

maroon 5's, "this love" is pimping lipton tea out here. do you have that there?

Don't think so, but when I was in England they had Santana's Samba Pa Ti on ads for...uhhh...cars? Food? Can't recall but it was an ad I haven't seen here.
-
Saw a commercial for Marshall's dept store, and the voiceover sure sounded like it was by Annalisa -- first time I've heard a KFOGger on a spot since Renee voiced that Chevron car some years back.

I've been thinking that myself for awhile now--it doesn't sound exactly like her radio voice, but it's too close to be someone else.
-
meant to mention this the other day: I've seen that Heineken commercial featuring Li'l Jon several times now, and really, once you've been mercilessly satirized by Dave Chapelle, shouldn't your career be over? Or at least your credibility?

Lil Jon, like malt liquor, transcends "credibility." He just gets a job done.
-
Comcast just added Sacramento's Channel 50 to the SF lineup -- Why?. But it means extra opportunities to see Ebert & Roeper.
So I'm watching the show (Kevin Smith subbing for Ebert!), tons of cheezy local Sac'to commercials, and there's a commercial for "G & S Auto Body", and the guy doing the voiceover is the same guy who does the voice on those "Professional Auto Body" spots on KBCO! Same line about "shmooshing your car" and everything. Small world.
-
Of particular interest to Urth: vintage Nuggets track "You're Gonna Miss Me" by the 13th Floor Elevators is flogging Dell computers. Roky Ericson's retirement fund just got a lot bigger.

Much needed. I remember conducting an interview with Henry Rollins in summer 2001 in which he told of how he was staging some benefit concerts for Roky; and he's continued to do such work in the years since. "Roky needs teeth," Hank explained then.

BAHAHAHA! In the novel I'm pretending I'm writing, I have a band called Lou Reed's Mullet. Maybe Roky Needs Teeth should be on the same label.
-
The Dandy Warhols' "Bohemian Like You" is now a Chevy commercial. Watching the A's Pregame and I've seen it 3 times already!
-
just heard "All You Need is Love" (not the Beatles) used in an ad for Chase credit cards.
That one's been around for a while. And BTW, we have a separate thread for songs in commercials
I can't find it!
This one:
http://10at10club.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=902
That's not a thread about real commercials, but hypothetical commercials!
It started out that way, but trust me, that premise only lasted for a couple of posts and it soon became the "Songs in Commercials" thread.
Well, I used my janitorial prerogative to slightly alter the name of this thread!

Have y'all seen Audrey Hepburn dancing to AC/DC (!) in that GAP ad?
Brilliant? Sacrilige? Both?

It sure is brilliantly put together. I just have issues with dead people advetising companies that didn't even exist when they were alive & well.
-
1) what sounds like T.Rex for Coke.
2) Chase is using the Stones' orig version of "I'm Free".
3) Donovan's "Happiness Runs (in a Circular Motion)" is flogging Fruity Cheerios -- Cheerios' answer to Froot Loops.
-
That new Iggy Pop song, the one that goes "I'm a Punk Rocker, yes I am" (it's actually some band with Iggy as Guest Vocalist) is already a Cadillac commercial.
-
A rather odd alt-rock cover of the Beatles' "From Me To You" (the melody has been thrown out the window) is being used for Macy's Xmas ad campaign.
-
Teegan & Sarah's "Walking With the Goat", er, "Walking With The Ghost", is being used on spots for the NBC series Medium.
-
Now, for some companies (McDonald's, for instance) it makes sense to do hip-hop commercials. But tonight I saw the new Greyhound bus campaign, flashy graphics + hip-hop sndtk. And I laughed out loud when I saw that their new wbsite is... letsgodog.com
-
Anyone noticed the backing track on the new Amex radio spot?
The Thamesmen (aka Spinal Tap), Gimme Some Money
You can't make this shit up...
-
not so much about music, but last weekend we were watching something on Discovery Channel, and saw ads for both Crown Royal & Johnny Walker Black.
Since when can hard alcohol be advertised on TV again?
-

It was sort of a gentleman's agreement not to advertise hard liquor, but it's been happening for years now, mainly on cable. Tons of Captain Morgan, Malibu Rum, Jack Daniels, etc. ads.

What about the ban on cigarette ads on TV? That was legislated, wasn't it? I remember when stations still aired them (maybe til the early 70s?), then they all stopped.
-
I'm tired of hearing the John Melloncamp song during the Chevy commercials. When that song comes on KFOG, I turn the station.

I believe you're right about the cigarette ads. It's funny to watch tapes of the early TV shows, sponsored by cigarette companies, with the stars prufusely sending up well-lit plumes of smoke for the cameras.
-

Indeed, this has been a running discussion on the Morning show -- KFOG has gotten a LOT of emails & calls complaining abot the fact that they're playing the JCM song.

-
Max Frost & the Troopers, "Shape of Things to Come" is now a Target commercial.
-
in the most OMGWTF commercial moment in a while, The Buzzcocks' "Everybody's Happy Nowadays" is now a commercial for...
AARP !?!

Just saw Sally Field (!) doing a commercial for some prescription-only osteoperosis medicine.
"you cured me -- you really cured me!"
-
the new Moto Crazr Fire phone, uses "Fire". Sounds great, but sheesh!
-
Hey urth -- Ben Folds' "Landed" is now a Hilton Hotels commercial.
-
Just saw a Tide commercial featuring a version of "America the Beautiful" that sounds to me like it's being sung by Jill Sobule.
ETA: oops, it's Cyndi Lauper!
But in finding that out, I stumbled upon this interesting tidbit: Ms. Lauper originally wrote "True Colors" for Anne Murray -- who turned it down. Ironically, Cyndi's now using the song to raise money for the Human Rights Campaign Fund.

Well, we know Anne's "true colors" are lavender and pink, but she pretends they're beige and gray.

"All You Need is LUVS"? haven't actually seen this commercial yet, but predictably some are upset:

Tis the season I guess. Last night I saw a Planters Peanut commercial that used the Bay City Rollers' S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y Night.
-
I kid you not: "Viva Las Vegas" has been transformed into "Viva Viagra"!
-
The White Stripes' "Conquest" is now a commercial for eBay. (Personally, I think it sounds like it belongs in an Austin Powers sequel.)
-
ELO's "Hold on Tight" is now flogging Honda Accords -- sans the verse en Francais. Accord-ez tois?
-
The University of Phoenix--that online diploma factory--has signed on the New Pornographers' Bleeding Heart Show (the best song off their 2005 Twin Cinema) in their latest TV campaign. (The same song is also going to be featured in a soon-to-be-released movie, but I can't recall which one.)
-
OMFG! ELP's "Karn Evil 9" in a Dr Pepper commercial!
-
Hope Gaz gets to see the Jeep Liberty commercial that has Andy Kim's "Rock Me Gently" performed by singing animals (!).
-
I'm sad to report that Joe Jackson's "One More Time" is now a Taco Bell commercial :'(

Not that I've seen. (Which means it hasn't been on Bravo, History, HGTV, Food Network, or Giants games.)
Meat's voice is sounding a little thin these days, although he's dropped a bunch of weight so good for him there. But the kid that plays his son is a dead ringer--I'd totally believe they were related.

It's played repeatedly during American Idol (last night was Andrew Lloyd Webber night, very strange). Which says too much about my viewing habits. :-[ Still, there's so many commercials in AI that I still was able to flip back and forth between it and the Sharks game so I saw most of the goals scored...
-
I was saddened to see Curtis Mayfield's "Move on Up" turned into a commercial for Aleve. :'(
Meanwhile the already ridiculously-overused "Mr Blue Sky" has been tapped yet again, this time by Jet Blue.
-
This one's kind of odd: a new Chevy commercial where a chorus of whistlers is whistling a tune in the background. Sounded familiar; I had to see the spot a 2nd time to figure out that the song being whistled is... the Lemonheads' "It's a Shame About Ray". WTF?
-
a song from the new Coldplay CD (not "Violet Hill"; I'm guessing the song is called "When I Ruled the World"?) is flogging iPods... and it's the best U2 imitation I've ever heard.

indeed. KFOG has it in rotation now. One for the "songs that don't include the title in the lyrics" list, yes?

I was pretty floored about the men's hair coloring product called "Touch of Gray." They were using the instrumental guitar riffs from "Sunshine of Your Love." Sheesh!

Here's a weird one: Scandal's semi-hit "Goodbye to You" is being used to sell a birth-control product called YAZ. (I guess Yaz weren't willing to license their songs).
-
Marvin Gaye's sexy take on the "Star-Spangled Banner" is being used in a Nike/US Olympic Basketball Team spot.
-
Oh. My. GAWD... a cover of Morrissey's "Every Day is Like Sunday" is being used by the NFL to flog their mobile and internet incarnations.
-
The Fixx's "Saved by Zero" is being used by Toyota to promote 0% financing.

That's funny - I've been waiting for that product! But I always imagined they would use the Dead song.
So does it add grey to your hair? Or remove what little you have? And if you have a lot?

I was pretty floored about the men's hair coloring product called "Touch of Gray." They were using the instrumental guitar riffs from "Sunshine of Your Love." Sheesh!
That's funny - I've been waiting for that product! But I always imagined they would use the Dead song.
So does it add grey to your hair? Or remove what little you have? And if you have a lot?
Basically, it strikes a middle balance so older men don't look like Marv Albert.
"More power!" Maybe Biden should consider using it. He looked awfully orange the other day.

The Fixx's "Saved by Zero" is being used by Toyota to promote 0% financing.
Another car ad: the Mercury Milan is using Morey fave, Tones on Tail's "Go" (aka "the ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya ya song"). And why is the instrumental intro to 3DN's "Shambala" (but not the vocal) currently being used to flog at least 3 different products?

Because whoever owns the publishing is selling it cheap? It couldn't have passed into public domain yet, could it?

SNL did a bit last week about a new game that's meant to be a hip-hop version of GH, in which players pretend to scratch records like hip-hop DJs. "Its for kids who are too lazy to pretend to play guitar!" was the line.

I've played it for a minute or two -- my nephew loves that game. But I'm not much of a gamer, and didn't care enough to figure out what I was supposed to do. If I was going to put some time into learning something musical, I'd dust off my guitars and really learn to play them beyond the 3 chords and 4 riffs I know now.

Nope. The CNET news department had one while I was there, but the jerks would always insist on playing it (loudly) while we were on deadline in reviews, so that just put me off it altogether.

I really don't watch live TV enough to see many commercials, but last night there was one that had Smashing Pumpkins "Today" playing over images of people doing fun stuff, and then Morgan Freeman's voice came on & asked if you ever wanted to do all this fun stuff, and I'm thinking, "Okay, they pulled out the big guns, but what is the product?"...after 45 seconds of this it finally reveals itself to be a Visa commercial.

I agree, but if they quit showing his work, most of these "amazing miracle product" companies would be dead in the water as far as TV ads. He did tons of 'em, and probably got paid a lot for his efforts, so they are reluctant to accede to a little thing like common decency just because he's dead.

And I thought Ellen Page doing those Cisco commercials was depressing: Just saw Elizabeth Moss, who plays Peggy Olson on Mad Men and who was on B'way last year in Mamet's Speed the Plow.... doing a commercial for Excedrin Migrane. OTOH, she also plays Jonah Hill's girlfriend in the new Get Him To The Greek, so maybe Excedrin is a step up.

one could argue the selling out part was writing that song itself. (I don't like the song, personally.)

Any one else notice that 2 ad campaigns that have revolved around African-American spokespersons -- the Miller HighLife spots with the fat black beer-truck driver, and the Allstate "good hands" commercials with Dennis Haysbert -- have been tweaked to add white guys. The Miller man now has a young white sidekick; Haysbert is no longer seen (tho' he's still voicing the tagline) in the Allstate spots which now focus on an annoying Caucasian guy who represents "Mayhem". Am I reading too much into this?

yes and no.
I don't think the allstate says that, it's 'a whole different head' sort of ad. It's not replacing one spokesperson with another. On the other hand, the Miller Lite, kinda tweaks in that direction, but it's a pretty silly campaign to begin with.

I realize the Allstae ads are going in a different direction -- but that's often ad-speak for "focus groups didn't like our spokesperson". Haysbert was VERY visibly the face of Allstate and now he's not being seen. I can't help wondering if they were getting pushback from, er, certain regions of the country.

I can't help wondering if they were getting pushback from, er, certain regions of the country.
you could certainly be right. I'm continually amazed at how overt racism is lately.

Seems like a stretch here, though. I mean, yes, it's certainly possible. But there are a hundred other possible reasons why he might not be showing up so much in the ads lately as well. For one thing, voice-over is probably a good deal cheaper, and the face is instantly connected to that voice, so why not save some money since they've already established the face? Or, maybe they are phasing him out, but only because the original bump the branding had created is levelling off or even declining. Or maybe some ad agency bigwig was up all night doing blow with the new guy's sister or girlfriend. Maybe Haysbert isn't interested in them anymore, or was temporarily busy.
Could be anything, really.

I like the remote VO angle. Dennis could be chiz-ill-axin' w a Mai Tai and some hottie while he does two minutes worth if work over a crystal clear ISDN line and *voila!* the production dudes have their Dennis Haysbert sound to use.
he could even be sitting there bare-nekkid getting his kink on while doing it. "Yeah, you're damn right I'm good hands while I do this voice over.. Oh yeah..."
Did Miller have a "white guy" commercial as well? b/c if they did, and now just they have a black guy commercial with a white sidekick, maybe it's b/c they realize they could use one commercial to appeal to two demographics. saves money.

"We Got The Beat" is now highlighting K-Mart's back-to-school ads.

Tom's Diner featured in a Volkswagen Jetta ad. I've gotta say, Volkswagen has a pretty good track record for using cool songs/bands in their ads.

Those Comcast spots for the NFL Red Zone Channel feature a rockin' cover of the old Dusty Springfield hit "Breakaway". Apparently it's by a band called the Detroit Cobras. Not found on You Tube, unfortunately.

An anti-smoking spot for a campaign called "Be an Ex" uses the classic instrumental "Swingin' Safari". Bert Kaempfert's got da mad hits!

I take it Samsung didn't go the I'm Fascinated By Your Love Boy by Company B route...

I'm surprised they didn't go with Bowie's "Fascination" off Young Americans. I'd think it would appeal to almost the same demographic as (KF)F.

a Top Ten hit trumps a deep LP track every time, I guess.

No music involved but a commercial for Old English just invited me to "bring out the natural beauty of your wood". A bit of French polishing, indeed!

Speaking of advertising and music, I heard an ad on KFOG for the Iggles show proclaiming them "America's Greatest Band!"
*gag*

OK, so Life As We Know It is a "heartwarming" rom-com about a couple who are thrown together when their married mutual friends are killed and the couple are named guardians of the dead folks' kids (yeesh, who writes this stuff?). But... WTF does "Solsbury Hill" have to do with it?

S&G's "Only Living Boy in NY" selling Hondas? WTF?

apparently Mr Simon's publishers are working overtime: "Slip Slidin' Away" is selling (wait for it) snow tires.
Meanwhile, will Microsoft get Greg Kihn to promote Kinect for X-Box 360?

Car ads seem to be casting a wide net for music beds. Saw a Subaru commercial tonight that used the Pogues' If I Should Fall From Grace With God.

Yeah, why spend thousands of dollars to license a track when you can get one from Shane McGowan for a beer and a clean needle?

The ad features a pee-wee hockey team, and nothing says "hockey" like a singer with no teeth.

A song called "Love" by Matt White is flogging the McRib. It was NTM, but the line that caught my ear was "like a summer's day in May", which gets the Neil Diamond don't-you-know-when-Summer-is? award.

I've been seeing an ad for a program on Discovery called "Brew Masters" that uses Curtis Mayfield's "Pusherman" from Superfly as the music bed. Interesting choice.

I had never heard that song until JJ unearthed it on KPOO a few months ago -- wow. One of the great WTF? tracks of all time. In a good way.

A print ad, actually (and I coulda put this in the "right wing" thread): BART is plastered with ads for taxbrain.com, a new do-your-taxes-on-line website. Most of the ads are innocuous, keyed (unsurprisingly) to the notion that nobody likes to do their taxes. But I was dumbstruck by the caption I saw today:
"IRS Making You Want To Join the NRA?"

I also noticed that "IRS...NRA" ad yesterday in a BART car, not in a station, and also thought that line was inappropriate. The downtown stations are plastered with other TaxBrain ads, but didn't notice the NRA one in a station.

at this stage it would be a good thing for a columnists to mention. Leah Garchik's is kinda gossipy, but she might be interested. CW Nevius might be interested.
Getting a photo would be key for a blog post. Although I typically blog in our bike blog, I could even mention it in one of the other newsy blogs here -- we have an general SFGate news tips & items blog that would work, and we would be wise to advertise this blog better and the entire idea that we're open to user-submissions.

My question is: how many other cities is this ad campaign running in? And how many approved (or rejected as offensive) that particular line? Are they on the NYC subway, for example? They're a national website, apparently.

Follow-up on the taxbrain.com "IRS Making You Want To Join the NRA?" campaign. I emailed BART the other day to complain and got this reply:
Ads are reviewed by the contracted ad agency that handles advertising in the bay area in both the public transit industry and out in general. They comply with standards that have been established for public transit advertising, and in BART we also exclude any ads that advocate alcohol and pornography.
This ad seemed to have applied a tongue-in-cheek humor as many individuals may apply in any variety of situations. However, given the coincidental timing of its display and the eventual incident of a couple weeks back, the client's catch line suddenly reflected in a different light. Please note that right after that, BART requested the ad agency to remove all copy of that ad.
Corporate doublespeak, but hey, they're (supposedly) removing those ads. In the time since I first posted, I've googled the phrase and found that several people have Tweeted about it, but nothing approaching a major mention in the press. SFist apparently ignored the tip I sent them about it.

Hey Mike, I'm sorry I never got around to sending this to a columnist here. Not that it would have guaranteed an appearance in the paper, but maybe a blog. I haven't seen any photos of it via google search, but just tweets here and there. You didn't happen to snap a photo, did you?

No, sadly, I didn't. But no worries, it's (presumably) a dead issue now.
But I have another question: they seem to have disabled the 'comments' feature on Zennie 62's CityBrights blog -- but they haven't done it to any of the other CityBrights bloggers. Did he get tired of people calling him an idiot?

All these people upset about the Groupon ads and the "Test Baby" spot... have they seen the Luvs diaper commercial with animated babies dropping big loads in their pants? All to the tune of "Whoops! There it Is"? ... er, EWWW!

My favorite spot currently airing is a Valentine's PSA that encourages men to check themselves for testicular cancer as a gift to their significant others. Seriously. And the tag line: "Why give diamonds when you can give the family jewels." I am not making this up.

OMG: Just heard a radio commercial for one of those herbal supplements for erectile dysfunction, and the spokesman was Peter Scolari, of Bosom Buddies fame. So Tom Hanks is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood and Scolari is concerned with, er, wood.

"Yummy Yummy Yummy" has been revived to promote some of Kellogg's most sugary cereals, like FrootLoops and AppleJacks.

have you seen the one for the couch support system, where they put "a four hundred pound sumo wrestler on the couch, and then a SIX hundred pound sumo wrestler on the couch -- that's ONE THOUSAND POUNDS OF SUMO!" and then the sumos high five.. (they aren't in sumo diapers, though, just civvies.)

Just saw that one for the first time tonight, and yeah, it caught my attention too. Except I surmise that the two "sumo wrestlers" are really just two fat guys, but they couldn't say "we're putting a 400-pound fat guy on the couch and then a 600-pound fat guy on the couch--that's ONE THOUSAND POUNDS OF FAT GUY."

FYC's "Good Thing" (actually, an instrumental version) is flogging Prevacid.
-
KT Tunstall's "Suddenly I See" is being used in spots for a new birth control pill called Seasonique. Great name -- but their slogan is (I swear) "Re-punctuate your life with fewer periods". ::)
Meanwhile, the Beatles' "All Together Now" is flogging Sprint.
-
The new BlackBerry Playbook (looks like half an iPad) must be "special" -- "Brass in Pocket" is being used in the commercials.
-
JB's "Super Bad" is selling Gatorade.
-
I've always liked the Progressive insurance commercials with "Flo" -- but the new ones with the guy with the moustache? Jeez, he's so OBVIOUSLY meant to be a mash-up of Keystone Beer's "Keith Stone" (some of the worst commercials I've ever seen) and Allstate's "Mr Mayhem"... whatever happened to creative ad agencies?
-
Time Warner Cable's using "Ca Plane Pour Moi" in its local ads!
-
So, the Blackberry Playbook runs Flash... so they're using Queen's "Flash! ahhh-ahhh!" in the commercial. Cute.
Meanwhile the Stones' "Miss You" is flogging Grey Goose vodka.
-
"Pictures of Matchstickmen" is the latest to be featured in a Target commercial. They're gonna run out of songs pretty soon.
-
They bought a birthday card for my supervisor so we could all sign it, and it's one of those cards that plays music -- "I Want Candy", the BowWowWow version! Hallmark done got hip.

Montell Jordan's "This is How We Do It" is selling Pepsi on some clever let's-really-stick-it-to-Coke spots. Maybe now we can get AL to play it in a 1995 set.
Meanwhile that Miracle Whip "there's a party in my mouth" guy has got to go. Eww.
-
Most hilariously bad misappropriation of hip-hop yet: the "when ah say PINEAPPLE, you say MANGO" McDonald's spots (for their new smoothies). Can't tell if it's an actual rapper or an actor playing one, but I LOLed at the absurdity of it. Smoothies jus' be SO gangsta.
-
While watching the SciFi channel (hate its new misspelling of its name as SyFy, btw) over the last week I've seen a commercial for a new shoot-em-up computer game that uses a cover of Nilsson's Best Friend (aka the theme from The Courtship of Eddie's Father). The irony in this is that probably a good 80% or more of the target market for this game are too young to get the reference.

How many different commercials has Iggy's "The Passenger" been used in now? Just saw it in a Captain Morgan spot.

It's become the "Still The One" of Gen X.

Old Navy has turned "Keep Feeling Fascination" into "Keep Trying Combinations". ::)
-
OMG: just saw the new Jack-in-the-Box commercial with the cop, fireman & construction worker... I won't spoil it, but great punchline.

The Slowskys are back!
...uh, they're the tortoises on the Comcast commercials. (how soon they forget) They had a baby. Awww...
-
Old Navy has turned "Keep Feeling Fascination" into "Keep Trying Combinations". ::)
And now they've remade "Only in My Dreams" as "Only in My Jeans". Guess Old Navy's target demo is the same as DC's ;)
OMFG: they've also turned Salt'N'Pepa's "Let's Talk About Sex" into "Let's Talk About Jeans". Oy.

worse yet: they've made "Sister Christian" even worse than it was -- didn't think that was possible.
But the dog and the cockatoo singing "Take on Me" for Geico is genius.

So I'm watching the Weather Channel and the local commercials come on... and they show a spot for "Countdown with Keith Olbermann on MSNBC". Not lately, pal. (It was the one with the kid at the spelling bee.) Ooops!
-
Duffy's "Mercy" is now flogging Samsung washing machines.
-
J.Lo is doing the umpteenth version of "Venus" on those lady razor commercials -- talk about unnecessary!
-
Just heard a local spot on 1340 The Boardwalk for a chiropractic group. The tagline: "remember, no one touches you like your chiropractor". Er, seriously??

"Rocket Man" is selling Volkswagen Passats in an amusing mondegreen-related ad.

"Ah got 99 problems but a bitch ain't one"
In a weird TANC, I posted the above Jay-Z lyric as my FB status after seeing someone wearing it on a T-shirt yesterday; then last nite I discovered the song is being used in commercials for the "Battlefield 3" video game. Only, of course, the word "bitch" is bleeped -- why would you spend money to license a song that you have to censor?

because everyone thinks, 'oh cool, they're using that bad-ass Jay-Z song but The Man is making them censor it! Bastards!'
I didn't know that was Jay-Z lyric until I just read this post, but I saw a variation of it on a t-shirt at Upper Playground:

there's also a ghetto variation, "99 problems but a SNITCH ain't one"
A straight friend suggested to me that the "bitch" version really should be a homo anthem, since gay guys never have woman problems. Which is especially funny if you know that Jay-Z is oft-rumored to be on the down-low.

Sam Worthington and the newly-slimmed-down Jonah Hill in a wildly overproduced TV ad for the "Call of Duty" video game. WTFF?

I'd seen this, but didn't notice the theater. I did notice Spreckels Lake and the Conservatory of Flowers, and wondered where some of the other scenes were shot.

no, but again, it was only that one thread and only because i typed a brand name (I think). But meanwhile, getting the "new" marker to disappear has become a chore (it doesn't just go away after you've read a post, you have to hit refresh multiple times.

Most disgusting thing ever: Marshmallow flavored Vodka. I am not making this up, just saw the commercial. Er, eww.

Not strictly a music comment, but the Jack In The Box "Jumbaco" ad makes me want to break things.
-
Ted Nugent's Strangelhold appears in a current Volkswagen ad, where a montage shows a character at progressing ages buying first a 10 speed bike (pre-teen), then a moped (teenager), then a Camaro (young man). Each time he asks the seller "Is it fast?"
now he's a little older and he's checking out a VW and asks "Is it safe" and we see he now has a kid strapped to his chest in one of those baby-backpacks-in-front. He's a baby-daddy! awwww!
cue the Nooge.

just saw a McDonald's spot for their "Chicken McBites" (their version of popcorn chicken, apparently) and everyone in the commercial was Asian. Never saw anything that ethnno-specific before. This was during 30 Rock on WGN.

I don't believe I'd react any better to "Chicken McBite".

Obviously their branding department is running out of inspiration when it comes to innovative ways to incorporate "Mc" with various new menu items. Although I would love to see an ad campaign with the tag line "McBite me!"

HAHA...! Who doesn't love the Man In Black, but I'll bet Rick Rubin and Tom Petty and those folks who collaborated on the resurgence of Johhny's career with those (very nice) remakes eventually started calling him "Johnny Cash Cow" -- and he probably didn't mind.

ETA: apparently this is a regular thing on ME-TV but most affiliates sell local spots in place of the retro ads, so a lot of folks (including us in the SF Market) don't see them. I guess KOFY's sales staff were asleep at the switch this month. I'd love to see more of them.

they're running their radio spots again (something about how they make your life easier in the summertime) and I've noticed that there are now 2 versions of the commercial, the usual "effin' easy" spot (hearing it on KFOG) and also a version where they sing "Fresh 'n' Easy" each time so as not to offend (which, oddly, has been running on Live 105).

Rod and others who are fond of typing "cow orker" here will appreciate this meme: Colbert did a bit Monday nite, re: the fact that the NFL will sue you if you say "Super Bowl" without permission. So he's doing a week of shows celebrating "Superb Owl XLVII".

I've heard that even people using only the roman numerals XLVIII are getting calls from NFL lawyers. Sheesh!

"Cow orker" obviously stems from a typing error and has been an Internet meme for around
twenty years. I wager it began in some usenet discussion group, and if Google hadn't ruined
their archive into an unusable pile of dung with the latest version, I'd try looking for its earliest
occurence.
The IOC et. al. are even bigger dicks about "protecting their brand." They went after businesses
in London who used "2012" on signs. One of many reasons why I have come to despise the
Olympics.

I think I first learned of "cow orker" on this board -- I think it was first introduced by mshray, though I might be misremembering. I'm not sure why it appeals to me, but it does.

My recollection agrees with Rod. I couldn't remember if it was Mark or Rod that first used it, but if Rod says it was Mark then it probably was. I think it did originate with a mis-typed space, about 10-12 years back. Could have come from elsewhere but this was the first place I saw it in use.

Another perfume commercial (I hate the holidays), Big Brother and the Holding Company, "Piece of my Heart", for "Miss Dior". Song doesn't seem to have much of anything to do with the commercial's story. And the story itself makes no sense anyway (runaway bride, a waiting helicopter, handsome European pilot). Perfume commercials are weird.

Few products rely on an emotional appeal for sales more than perfume. I doubt the complete lyric
narrative of the songs chosen for perfume ads have very much to do with their selection.
I've seen the Chanel commercial, and its obvious they are playing up a sense of mystery and alure,
of being desired and pursued. The Zombies' soundtrack seems appropriate to me, as long as one
doesn't overthink it -- which is my point.
I haven't seen the Dior spot, but a tie-in to the refrain in Piece of my Heart seems obvious.
I suspect most of the bright lights in advertising agencies these days weren't even born in the
'60s, so the emotional resonance these songs have for those of us approaching geezerdom is
largely absent. I'd guess they just think it's a cool old song with a snippet of words that fits in
with their impressionistic video collage. They probably never considered the discordant reality of
Janis' romantic failures and her tragic early death.

The interesting thing about this version (which I Shazamed, then ended up buying it) is that it's performed by Lilly Winwood. Yeah, that's Steve Winwood's daughter. Listen close, you'll hear him on harmonies. Pretty sweet.
The long version of the commercial starts out a little weird/depressing, but eventually gets there:

It's not advertising, but I don't think there's a category for incidental music in television programs...
In the recently-broadcast first episode of HBO's Westworld series, during a saloon scene I was amused to
hear a barroom piano play the unmistakeable opening measures of Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun.
An instrumental cover of the Rolling Stones' Paint It Black was also used in the prelude to a bloody
robbery.

Yeah, it was kind of fun - the tinkly version of Black Hole Sun, the big, Bernsteinian Paint it Black. Overall, not that impressed with "Westworld" (and I'm a huge fan of both westerns *and* sci-fi), but I'll give it a few more episodes, and look for little touches like this.

2 that disturbed me : "Come Together" for Walmart (does the MJ estate still control the Beatles catalog?) And a nearly unrecognizable cover of Little Peggy March's "I Will Follow Him" (!) re-titled "I Will Follow You", for Apple, done by a singer called Toulouse, who sounds like a half-dozen treacly-voiced Triple-A artists (think: an even wimpier Coldplay).

The commercial is titled "Hello Light" and is one minute 45 seconds long. It begins with
audio clips that explicitly reference VW's falsification of diesel emissions tests and seems
to tell the story of an engineer seeking to rehabilitate the company's image. He looks for
inspiration in past designs, including the classic VW bus. Near the end we get glimpses
of the I.D. Buzz, a concept car first shown in 2017, and scheduled to become a production
vehicle in 2022.

Here's one that actually makes some sense -- the Vogues' Turn Around, Look At Me in an
ad touting the Volkswagon Tiguan's rear view camera system.
-
I can't imagine this hasn't been noted before, but it just dawned on me that I've been seeing the Kraft cheese commercials, featuring Enya's "Only Time" for quite a while!

-
I can't imagine this hasn't been noted before, but it just dawned on me that I've been seeing the Kraft cheese commercials, featuring Enya's "Only Time" for quite a while!
I've heard it, but I didn't know the song title. It's one of the only two or three Enya songs I like.
(One of which is, of course, Orinoco Flow, which has also been used for at least one commercial.)
-

Tears for Fears' Everybody Wants To Rule the World.
And on a seasonal note, the Waitresses' bouncy Christmas Wrapping appears in commercial
for Nissan's year-end clearance sale.
-
Some modern version in an ad for Esri location services.

I found an article about the song, which is credited to Nas. This certainly stretches the limits of fair use/sampling as far as I'm concerned:

From Henry Mancini's wonderful soundtrack for Breakfast At Tiffany's, Something For Cat

-
The Chambers Brothers' Time Has Come Today in an ad for Amazon Web Services (AWS)

appear during the Superb Owl.
-
There's a Geico commercial where Build Me Up Buttercup (originally charted by The Foundations)
is sung by its characters as a kind of call-and-response. I was a little puzzled that they would
use a song more than fifty years old for this, as I would suspect that few of their target demographic
had ever heard this song. (I know that Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline is better known for the
call-and-response treatment, but it's been played at sporting events for over twenty years.)
[clickety-clickety] I see that BMUB was on the soundtrack for Mallrats. I don't know how it was
used in that film, but that might explain its expected familiarity with the intended audience.

It's one of those songs whose place in "Tier 2 canon" somewhat mystifies me. I'm thinking 'Late 60's pop that is not overly syrupy, yet not inaccessible'. Back when bar trivia was a thing, it was part of our host's rotation.

It is one of the handful of remaining '60s hits that still gets consistent airplay on oldies stations that generally do not play much '60s stuff (along with "Brown-Eyed Girl", "Happy Together" and "Na-Na, Hey-Hey etc"). When they do audience research, it "tests" really well.
