Title: 5 March 2012: it's... 1996
Post by: RGMike on March 04, 2012, 05:10:31 PM
no clues so far. I was thinking we might get a Ronnie Montrose-active year. "Town Without Pity" is '78 and we were just there. He did play on a ziilion other people's records, tho'.

ETA: per the FB gang, KFOG just ran the promo indicating it's '96. *sigh*.

1973 had three good ones:
 "Space Station No. 5"
 "Bad Motor Scooter"
 "Rock Candy"

And "Rock The Nation" to boot.  Heck, any track from the first Montrose album works for me.

I'm hoping AL uses some of her backlog of '96 requests (I've got several I've made repeatedly, like Lush and Imperial Teen)... but I ain't holdin' mah breath.

A good day to see what the Sound is doing, perhaps.

Hard to believe it's been 3 months since our last '96 visit -- here's that setlist for comparison

Quote
12/13/11 - Tuesday! What I Got from 1996!!

  1. Sublime - What I Got
  2. Goldfinger - Here In Your Bedroom
(Movie: Beavis and Butthead Do America)
  3. Barenaked Ladies - The Old Apartment
  4. Shawn Colvin - Get Out of This House
(News: Charles and Diana announce their Royal Divorce)
  5. Peter Gabriel - I Have the Touch (remix) (B.O.S-Tie)
  6. R.E.M. - Bittersweet Me
(News: VP/ Al Gore debates Jack Kemp)
 7. Fugees w/ Lauryn Hill - Killing Me Softly With His Song
  8. Hooverphonic - 2Wicky

  9. Oasis - Champagne Supernova (B.O.S-Tie!)

The Sound is doing '81 (and leading off with Billy Squier, godhelpus), so I'll take my chances with '96.

One of my students thought it was Beck.

not sure who this is that can't stop the rain.  But cute seg into Garbage's "rain" song... which is borderline LN to my ears.

ETA: it was Los Lobos.

I was never a big fan of "Natural One" but proxy of Gaz iirc.

Los Lobos. Pretty decent mix of songs so far. Bummed that I missed the Johnny Cash tune though.

Chris Isaak is LN as an artist, never mind individual songs.

Great minds. Was just about to post that this song isn't overplayed in the least, but I don't need to hear Chris Isaak under any circumstances.

was that Johnny Cash a re-release?  Sounds like 1966, not 1996.

who's this after the Friends clip?  not bad.  at least it sounds NTM.

"Naked Eye"? Luscious Jackson, a frequent(ish) flier -- tho' this is a slightly different mix.

I'm not recognizing this Brit new wavish sounding song that followed Naked Eye. But I'm liking it. BOS.

ETA: I was hoping someone else would ID it. And RGM did, while I was posting. Thanks! That one's a keeper.

Not to mention it shows up all too frequently in 1997 as well.

Hot dayum, she finally played it!  Lush was one of my fave early 90s bands.  Saw them a couple of times - at Slim's in '92 and at the Fillmore in'94 w/Weezer opening.  Sadly, their drummer ended up hanging himself a few years later.
