Around '78-'79 was the time when I listened to AT40 on a weekly basis -- I was ten. I remember pretty much all of these songs climbing up the chart, especially from the first half of the year, but i can't remember which ones I was rooting for. Sultans of Swing for sure, but I think it stalled out at 4, and John Stewart's Gold, which got to 5. Probably Billy Joel and Foreigner, too, and maybe the singles from The Long Run, based on lingering love for Hotel California. It is wild to see three Bee Gees songs at number one within a few months of each other and remember that their album was considered a disappointment. That's how huge they were in '78. Or maybe it wasn't a commercial disappointment, it's just that the songs aren't nearly as good as the SNF hits.

Your 1979 is my 1985 (although in my case it was John Leader's Countdown America - didn't start listening to AT40 until late 1986).

I was thisclose to requesting "Love You Inside Out" -- one of the most underrated #1s of that period, IMHO.

In the Morey era, '65 thru '85 were pretty swell. '86 on up were kinda painful just because Dave was so reluctant to play pop cheeze or R&B after the mid-'80s... which is why '87 and '89  were the most-dreaded years on his watch. AL (pre-DC) really made '86 thru the '90s interesting, and those years have suffered most from DC's tinkering.  I'm hoping Tuesday's '87 set was a harbinger rather than an anomaly.

patti Smith, somewhat recycling "Because the Night" with "Frederick" -- I remember seeing Brooce in Nov of '80 and he did "Because the Night" and I turned to my friend and said "think he'll do 'Frederick' next?"

For a millisec I thought it was "Because The Night", but then I realized it wasn't, and I've been fooled by this before - it was just different enough for me to think it was somebody else.

oh-ah, oh-ah!

But like yesterday this was a mix of frequent-fliers, pop cheeze and rarities.

Tomorrow is (presumably) our '90s day for the week, so... we shall see.  And AL mentioned on FB she was recording Xmas greetings, but has she said anything on-the-air?

BOS's Patti Smith, Buzzcocks.  Joy Division.  I minded Petty more than the Police.  Buggles didn't sound too bad esp. after Joy Division.

I listened to 1987 and then 1979 today. Annalisa is definitely ON FIRE. These kinds of sets are why I listen. There's a mix of the familiar and new. The clips are new. There are a variety of styles of music.

I don't consider a good 10@10 one where I like all the music. In fact, it's nice to have a stinker or two because you might be surprised what you like or what memories it brings back. Playing the same Katrinas though has no chance of surprise or memories because you're just thinking of the other day when you heard the same song, if you're thinking at all.

Today, I really liked the cute transitions:

Eclipse news -> Walking on the moon
Video Cassette news -> Joy Division, Transmission
RCA TV ad -> TV Killed the Radio Star

Anyway, be sure to email or send her your thanks. And if DC was the problem, thank him for taking a vacation.

Agreed, though I missed the first half of the set (interminable 9am meeting).

As for TP's "Here Comes My Girl," even I find it a bit unneccesary.  The song is fine, but any song I can recall completely in my brain isn't really needed in a 10@10.

12/21/11 - Wednesday! We Landed in Joe's Garage in 1979!!

 1. Frank Zappa - Joe's Garage (Born 12/21/40) ( B.O.S-Tie!)
(Movie: The Muppet Movie - "Bunch of weirdos around here!")
 2. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Here Comes My Girl
 3. Patti Smith Group - Frederick
(Movie: The Jerk - Singin' on the beach-You Belong To Me)
 4. Rickie Lee Jones - Chuck E.'s In Love
(Movie: The Jerk- kiss? Naw)
 5. Buzzcocks - Everybody's Happy Nowadays
(Ad: McDonald's intro's Happy Meals)
 6. The B-52's - Rock Lobster
(TV: Mork & Mindy - Na-Nu Na-Nu!)
 7. Patrick Hernandez - Born to Be Alive
(News: Walter Cronkite reporting - Last total solar eclipse in North America until 2017)
 8. The Police - Walking on the Moon
(News: The new technology of satellite TV-Video Cassettes)
 9. Joy Division - Transmission (B.O.S-Tie!)
(Ad: Colortrac TV by RCA)
10. The Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star

Apart from The Po-Pos, this was a pretty great set I missed (again).  If I had to choose one, I'd BOS "Joe's Garage".  My knowledge of Zappa tunes is spotty at best, but I know and love this one.  Nanu-nanu!
