Title: Live 8 thread
Post by: ggould on July 02, 2005, 09:13:12 AM
Just tuned in, missed some sort of opening number collaboration with U2 and Paul McCartney.  Black eyed peas are on now.  It's on VH1 and MTV.

Thanks for the tip, Geoff!

I tuned in just in time for Will Smith so things have to get better from here on.

It's kind of hard for an old fart to stomach, all these MTV-types, all this hip hop, but there have been a few gems here and there.  I guess there's going to be a compilation show on ABC tonight.  Hopefully I'll get to see Pink Floyd at some point.  Nothing actually seems live, it's kind of like watching a golf tournament, where they always go: "and just a moment ago, this birdie attempt."

They showed about a third of a song from a band in Johannesburg.  Good Charlotte in Tokyo seemed to fit the anal-retentive atmosphere of a Japanese concert.  Snoop Dogg on right now.

Green Day in Berlin was pretty hot.  I liked the guitar player from Audioslave too.

Madonna, doing "Like A Prayer" backed by a multi-culti chorus. Madge, ya look faaab-you-luss!

This is actually quite nice.

saw alot of it at the gym -- without sound, unfortunately. Will someone tell me WTF the deal was with Michael Stipe wearing Spock-ears and blue facepaint?

I bow to no one in my admiration of REM's songs. But Stipe, as a rock star/icon is a major Guilty Displeasure for me. I don't "get" him; I'm baffled by people (both male and female) who think he's "hot". I find him creepy. He seems to go out of his way to be unattractive, as if to say "I'm a rock star and you're gonna sleep with me anyway, so why should I care about my appearance?"

don't ask me; I've never understood the accolades either.  I find some of their material 'catchy' but ultimately it sounds like some kind of insider's joke.

FYI, you can eliminate the &token=LongStringOfRandomLetters in the nuisance AMG links.  This one would be:

MTV just finished re-playing the London show. I tuned in for Pink Floyd. Zowie!!!!!!!!!!! Comfortably Numb indeed. Sir Paul next with help from George Michael. Looking and sounding very nice. Finished with Helter Skelter. Fab.

I watched the download today of the Pink Floyd set (see url above) and I have to tell you, I am still bloody impressed.  What a fuckin' great group!  Gilmour has the most bizzarely oval face, it fits the wide-screen mode perfectly!
