No, it's got nothing to do with Britney...
A current hit show on British TV is "Hit Me Baby One More Time", which brings back washed-up, er, older acts who haven't had a hit in ages. Five acts per week, they perform and then the audience votes for their fave, Idol-style.

There's an American version coming to NBC this summer... 3DN anyone?
-
Regardless of what the show's like, whoever designed its logo should be drummed out of the design biz permanently--it's practically illegible. If it were typed out, it would look like:
Hit m more
< >< > e 1 time
baby
ETA: OK, that came out even more illegibly than the logo itself, but you get the idea.

Personally, I'd prefer the Ides of March.... :D

I smell a poc theme show! Ides of March, David Clayton-Thomas...

Ultra Nate never went away! She still does the Pride circuit every summer with the likes of CeCe Peniston and Sybil!
-
Please note that in Ep 3, Carol Decker of T'Pau defeated Nick Heyward. Infer from that what one must. :x

I think that's exactly why she's considered washed up... Oh, I guess that's what you meant.

Update: They're bringing this to America this summer. Sophie B. Hawkins is among the participants, which saddens me a bit -- I hope she's not going to have one of those hyper-melismatic ballads foisted upon her.

Update update: per EW, the lineup for this Thurs' (6/2/05) premiere includes
Billy Ray Cyrus
Tiffany
Wang Chung
Loverboy (will they wear the red leather pants?)
Tommy Tutone (will they wear the red leather neckties?)
Cameo (will he wear the read leather codpiece?)
BTW, re: Sophie B., I thought the idea is that they sing their old hits, to see if they've still "got it", no?

BTW, re: Sophie B., I thought the idea is that they sing their old hits, to see if they've still "got it", no?
They sing their best-known hit, and in the second round they sing a contemporary song in the modern idiom. That's how they see if they've "got it." It would be intriguing if these weren't real people. With no money in their coats, we can't say they never tried. But ain't it time we said goodbye?

Yikes. So we'll get Cameo covering Usher? Tiffany doing Britney? More residuals for Diane Warren?

I'm watching the show as I write this -- I sure hope Gaz got to see it!
Good gawd -- Tiffany has quite a rack! the lineup (besides her): Loverboy, Flock o'Seagulls, CeCe Peniston and Arrested Development. Ms Peniston still has her voice, as does (surprisingly) Loverboy's Mike Reno. But having them do current covers... I dunno. Arrested Development doing Los Lonely Boys' "Heaven"?

Yes, Tiffany has 'growed up' indeed. Arrested Development are the best by far, but what the hell do I know?
Watching Grateful Dead Movie on 9 during the many commercial breaks.

they chose to give their $20K charity donation to UNICEF Africa/Sudan relief.
results of nbc.com poll:
Which band was your favorite?
Tiffany 23%
CeCe Peniston 15%
A Flock of Seagulls 10%
Arrested Development 23%
Loverboy 30%

Guess you know a lot -- they won.
Next week: The Knack and (gulp) Haddaway, among others.

yup, quick crowd shot during Sugar Magnolia. Side view of big guy in blue work shirt, beard ponytail.
This really takes me back. I went all five nights, and the first night was the first 'date' I had with Martha after she came back from Africa. Any clubmembers who want to get the CD or DVD, see me for special deals. It's really killer stuff, if you want to know what the Dead were like at the peak of their craft.

I meant to bring the DVD to the last gathering, but it didn't happen.

Guess nobody else watched HMBOMT this week...
The Knack were pretty good; their choice of a cover -- Jet's "Are You Gonna Be My Girl?" struck me as inspired, since it's as lecherous as the Knack's original material was back in '79.
Haddaway looked the best because it's only been 12 years for him. The song remained the same.
Tommy Tutone weren't bad either; oldest-looking lead singer of the nite. They covered Blink 182's "Small Things".
The Motels appeared to be "Martha Davis and some other guys"; she kept saying "I" rather than "we". Their cover -- a punked-up version of Norah Jones' "Don't Know Why" was an interesting idea that didn't quite work IMHO, but points for trying.
Lastly, there was Vanilla Ice, perhaps the most talentless idiot ever to sell 7 million copies of an LP... so of course he won.
Next week: Wang Chung, Irene Cara and Howard Jones!

I thought the Knack were awesome during My Sharona!

I watched on and off. Didn't know who Haddaway was but the girls in the black dressess were nice to watch. Liked Tommy Tutone, for a good time call.........I thought the Knack sucked. They had the chords OK but the vocal was lacking.

The problem with the show, for me, is that the target audience would seem to be people 35+ (starting with folks who were in High School in the '80s and working upward). But the studio audience appears to be people who were barely born when Tommy Tutone was calling Jenny. Which explains why rap acts won two weeks in a row.

You're probably right. I just happen to think Arrested Development are a real hot band, and don't even put them in the same galaxy as Vanilla Ice, but from a certain perspective, yup, they're both rap acts.

Dead on about Vanilla.
I'll have to tune in next week for Wang Chung & Howard Jones, two group that were very well trained classical musicians, so they shouldn't have lost the ability to play their keyboards if nothing else.

In the British version of the show, Howard Jones lost to Tiffany! So Americans don't have a monopoly on bad taste.

I watched just long enough to see the Knack's My Sharona. Decent performance except did any one notice that they pretty much cut the entire guitar break out of the middle? Went straight from the second chorus to the coda and the end of the song. Also, I thought the mix was kinda crappy--too much audience, not enough of the band. But I guess everyone knows the song (including the twenty-somethings in the front row), so ya really don't have to hear it that well.

All the contestants have been doing shortened versions of their hits -- that way they can cram in five in a half hour plus commercials. Sorry to harp on Mr Ice (as the NY Times would say) but I guess you can't go wrong being a moron in America -- makes you all the more popular (c.f. Dubya).
I still remember being with a bunch of twentysomethings in 1990 (I was 35) and commenting on this idiot Vanilla Ice I had just seen on MTV -- "he's the rap version of NKOTB", I said -- and they jumped all over me, insisting he was, like, totally awesome. Six months later I was vindicated, of course. But I guess what you loved in yer youth will always be precious no matter how crappy it may have been.
-

Indeed. P. T. Barnum would agree.
-
Apparently HMBOMT is popular enough that they've ordered more episodes beyond the three-ep tryout. Local rocker Greg Kihn (who dissed the show before it aired) will -- you guessed it -- be taping an episode in a couple weeks. He's looking for suggestions of a "current" song to do.

He was taking a lot of calls on this last Friday a.m., many of whom claimed to have seen GK play recently & were saying that they thought he would kick butt on the show.

Well he's gotta be better than Vanilla Ice
It's a win-win for him, since he has a steady gig; his career doesn't depend on the show. He does play regularly, so he's "in shape" so to speak (musically, at least). He should cover a Green Day song.

He only loses in the eyes of people who don't know he's been a thriving DJ all these years; they will incorrectly assume that he's been waiting all this time for his Big. Comeback. I wonder if this weighs on the other participants.
I think Greg's choice should be Rob Thomas's current hit, "Lonely No More."
-
I was listening to KUFX (KFOX 98.5) today and apparently the Hit Me Baby crew was in town today covering Greg Kihn for a show. He's a goofball. I saw him at Shoreline last year and he was great!

I think it should be something by The Killers, maybe "Smile Like You Mean It".

Me too -- this show is my current guilty pleasure, and I HATE American Idol and all that kinda crap. This week was maybe the best lineup, talent-wise; no glaringly obvious idiot like Vanilla Ice. Some of the covers were indeed bizarre. Wang Chung's white-boy version of "Hot in Herre" was amusing, and Cameo almost pulled off funkifying Bowling For Soup's "1985". Best fit: Howard Jones doing Dido. And Irene Cara won, the first time the oldest contestant got the most votes.
And Sophie B is still hot.
-

you mean the might silly hat on his penis?
(I really did not need to see a bright red codpiece, tonight or ever)
Started the DVR but watched the first 4 acts come onstage before realizing that my 3 year old was not going to sleep, have to watch the rest tomorrow.
Yeah, I'm hooked now too.
-
(I really did not need to see a bright red codpiece, tonight or ever)
But it's his signature, er, piece. Best outfit of the night, hands down.

In the early '70s, as a teen, I said that some station should play "softer" rock tunes -- people who considered themselves too young for "muzak" would listen to a station like that. A couple years later, "mellow" formats sprangup everywhere, and evolved into "lite rock". Around '79 or '80 I said that, given the success of the "oldies" format, someone should do "album oldies". People laughed, but a few years later, "classic rock" was all the rage.
One morning in 1996, Dave played "My Maria" on 10@10 and I commented that BW Stevenson sounded a lot like the guy from Brooks & Dunn -- "they should do a remake", I said. Less than 2 months later their version was released and was a #1 country hit.
If only this worked with lottery numbers...

Tonite's the nite for Greg Kihn on HMBOMT. Here's Brad Kava, from his SJ Merc Radio Blog:
"Today is the day KUFX-FM (98.5) deejay Greg Kihn competes in Los Angeles on the NBC show "Hit Me Baby One More Time," ... it will air [tonight] at 9 p.m.
He goes against Billy Vera, Club Nouveau, Glass Tiger and Thelma Houston (who will be his biggest challenge).
I think the fact that he's playing the current hit by East Bay rockers Green Day, "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," gives him a solid chance, even though the voting TV audience favors R&B acts.
Don't just watch this on TV. Head down to Double D's Sports Grill in Los Gatos (at the corner of Highway 9 and Santa Cruz Avenue), where the staff of KUFX is hosting a party to root him on from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m."

Damn, I've got a 9pm softball game tonight. And I aint got no TIVO.
Though, considering my reaction to last weeks show, which and Suzie B Hawkwad (cant remember her name right, but she was pathetic), I'm okay with missing it... Go Greg!
-
I'm tuned in and waiting. He taped it last night and talked a bit on this morning's show but confidentiality prevented him from talking about results. I hope he wins but I'll be rooting for Thelma too.
-
Greg sounded OK, but man he got all sweaty after what appeared to be not much exertion. I'm looking forward to the interview when he comes on for round two.
It looks like in the audience they moved all the pretty young things up front and the guys are relegated to upper levels.

Really! That song was HUGE. He also had a minor career in the late '60s doing duets with Judy Clay.
But Ali's right about Mr Kihn -- guess he doesn't get much exercise sitting behind the K-FOX mic. I was glad he did "Breakup Song" but I think his voice was not quite up to the Green Day cover. My money was on Club Nouveau, especially after their Dido cover, which I thought worked quite well (2nd week in a row that someone covered Dido, BTW). But I was perfectly fine with Thelma winning.
Did they say who's on next week? If so, I missed it.

Thelma was awesome. I'd like to see/hear her and Teddy together now. Well, that'll never happen.

Well, if you don't know what a sap I am by now, I don't know what to say! Here's a brief descripition from the songfacts.com site:
it was used in three episodes of Family Ties in 1985 and 1986, as a backdrop for romantic interludes between Alex P. Keaton (played by Michael J. Fox) and Ellen Reed (played by Tracy Pollan, who became Fox's wife in real life).
The couple were at a dance, and getting very tender, when Ellen freaked out and split. I believe it was at the end of a season, and the intersection of Billy Vera's tender voice (I think he still has a great voice) and the plot were quite potent, which shot the song to #1. This is all from my memory, so the facts may be slightly skewed by time!

looks like next week features Animotion, Juice Newton, Missing Persons, Shannon (the black woman who did "Let the Music Play", not the British guy who did "Abergavenny"), and a player to be named later.
BTW Ali, word on the street is that the Bewitched movie blows huge chunks (as of this afternoon it was averaging 21 points on metacritic.com [out of 100]).

Missing Persons, wow I sure hope Dale has kept in good shape. If she is anything near as hot today as she was then they'll win hands down.
I too thought Greg's voice was not up to snuff, but his son Ry was smokin' on his mini guitar solo. One caller to Greg's show this morning said Greg was 'horrible', but most callers were supportive. Everyone agreed that Thelma showed some awesome vocal talent, and Greg said, "She won fair & square". He went on to say that she should win the finals hands down.
I didn't realize there were going to be finals.
Who is the Seacrest wannabe host? Why can't he maintain the same accent throughout the show? And don't you think they should let the audience vote him a new haircut?
-
I didn't realize there were going to be finals.
Me either... I don't think the producers knew at first either -- NBC ordered 3 eps and extended the run when it became popular. (But not as popular as Dancing with the Stars -- yikes, is America insane? Oh, right, it is.)
Who is the Seacrest wannabe host? Why can't he maintain the same accent throughout the show? And don't you think they should let the audience vote him a new haircut?
He was the host of the Brit version, and presumably the accent is real. And yeah, he's WAY annoying. But Seacrest was unavailable, Ed Mc Mahon's too old and Dick Clark is -- sadly -- still in poor health.
-
BTW Ali, word on the street is that the Bewitched movie blows huge chunks (as of this afternoon it was averaging 21 points on metacritic.com [out of 100]).
I saw the review in Newsweek, which was a bit more kind, but did you know what the plot is? Instead of remaking the TV show, this is a movie about the hypothetical remaking of the TV show.
Will Farrell's character is the actor hired to play Darren, Shirley MacLaine's character is the actor hired to play Endora, but guess what, Nicole Kidman's character, the actor hired to play Samantha, really IS a witch. Fun & love ensue.
This has to be one of the lamest premises I have ever heard, and if it were anyone other than Nora Ephron I seriously doubt the pitch would have been picked up. Looking forward to seeing this on an airplane ride sometime next year.

from nbc.com:
"Popular UK personality Vernon Kay "hops the pond" to host the new U.S. version of the UK smash hit, "Hit Me Baby One More Time." Originally from Bolton, England, Vernon created quite a stir within the television industry. His spontaneous wit and charming accent make him a huge hit with both male and female viewers of all ages. Vernon has a vast amount of hosting experience both live and pre-recorded. His first taste of fame was a few years ago when he was spotted by a model scout from Select at the BBC'sClothes Show Live. He began a successful modeling career but it was not long before he was picked out for stardom by Channel 4 when he won Model of the Week on "The Big Breakfast". Since then his personality and cheeky boyish charm have been noticed and put him in demand for numerous presenting roles.
He hosted the quiz show "Head Jam" on BBC2 and BBC 3 and now presents Celebrities under Pressure on ITV, along with "Hit MeÖ". He hosted "Wife For William" and "The Grill". Prior to this, Vernon hosted the Saturday night show "Boys and Girls". Vernon was the co-presenter for BBC2's "Top of the Pops Plus", in addition to fronting the spin-off series "Top of the Pops@ Play" for Play UK. The shows were music-based formats with live band performances and interviews with entertaining viewer interaction.
Not only is Vernon an accomplished and popular TV personality, but having been given the opportunity to stand in for [former "Madness" frontman and current radio host] Suggs on XFM's mid-morning show he has proved to be a natural broadcaster."

Missing Persons, wow I sure hope Dale has kept in good shape. If she is anything near as hot today as she was then they'll win hands down.
I'll be curious if Dale's ex, Terry, (who is one of the most amazing drummers I've ever seen, not to mention an SF native) will be taking part. I'm told their split was, ummm, rather ugly. I'm thinking it will be Dale and a cast of hired guns.
Count me among those who thought Mr. Kihn sounded lousy. Had it not been for the other guys in the band singing backup, he would have sounded really bad. And my wife made the comment that he looks like he's a regular patron of the morning doughnut cart at K-FOX.
-
Is the guy real tall, or are all the stars just real short? It's kind of the reverse of the Daily Show, when it takes someone like Robert Reich to not call attention to Jon Stewart's height, or lack of.

I always thought Greg Kihn succeeded more on cleverness than actual musical talent, at least as far as his voice was concerned. Remember, he came out of the whole 'Berserkely' scene. If you listen to his old hits, which I like, you can hear a pretty stiff style.

He appears to be quite tall, either that or he's wearing huge platform heels. From guardian.co.uk :
"Vernon Kay, TV's village idiot.
Kay is a one-man walking blight-on-our-culture, a dog-haired Toby jug, a self-satisfied banality engine, a git, a twit, a twat and an oaf. He dribbles tedious, repeated references to down-home life back in Bolton, presumably to underline what a Phoenix Nights-style man of the people he is, although from where I'm sitting he looks and sounds more like an unjustly elevated simpleton than a likable everyman. He shouldn't be on television - he should be sitting on a country stile wearing a peasant's smock and chewing on a hayseed, some time during the Dark Ages (and preferably at the height of the Black Death)."

Jeez, Guardian, tell us how you really feel!

If anyone called me a "dog-haired Toby jug"? I'd kick their ASS!
Just as soon as I figured out what that meant....

LOL! I didn't know either:
toby jug , small pottery pitcher or mug modeled in the form of a jolly, stout man wearing a cocked hat, a corner of which serves as pourer. The jug is also called fillpot, both names taken from Toby Fillpot, inebriate character in the 18th-century song "Little Brown Jug." Popular in England and America of that day, the toby jug has become a collector's piece.

Thanks, RGMike!
Heh. "dog-haired Toby jub". I love when Brits go off.
ETA: Toby jugs for all my friends!

Yep, that and most of the girls I knew thought he was cute.
But yeah, his Beserkeley stuff was pretty catchy. His take on For You was the first version of that song that I knew. (But I caught on quick). And Madison Avenue was another big fave.
About 1989 or so I remember going into a bar in Walnut Creek and seeing Dave Carpender, the original guitarist from the Greg Kihn Band playing in some bar band. He was flattered that I remembered him.

BTW Ali, word on the street is that the Bewitched movie blows huge chunks (as of this afternoon it was averaging 21 points on metacritic.com [out of 100]).
So guess who likes it?
Mick (I gave Catwoman a B+ too!) LaSalle.
Among other things he says, "it's funny, easily the funniest and least self-conscious movie that director Nora Ephron has made."
Ebert gave it a B-, called it "tolerably entertaining", and his was the 2nd highest rating (after Mick) among over a dozen other critics.
Whenever Mick likes something that nobody else does, you know it really sucks.

ROTFLMAO! He really is a tool. And he fancies himself a film historian (has written several books) and his reviews and think-pieces in the Chron are always riddled with errors.

The Chronicle has had so many better film critics over the years (Michael Sragow, Peter Stack, Edward Guthmann, to name three)--it's sad to see that LaSalle is what they're left with. But when you consider the quality of the rest of the Chron's meager content, maybe that's not so tough to figure. The New York Times it ain't.

Damn, damn, damn. I must stay objective. Must see movie.

Bewitched was OK, I liked it. Yeah, yeah, I had to see it. Nicole is adorable. The actress who played her neighbor looked so familiar but I still can't place her. Shirley/Emdora was great. Not a lot of lines but she looked the part.

All roads lead to Katrina-ville.
Maybe it's just me after listening to over 1,000 1980's retreads earlier in the week but nothing being played on the radio has been too satisfying. Are playlists being subtly tweaked? Who are the stations trying to be popular with? Perhaps I'm getting old and cranky.
Seems liked I have been hearing an overload of Eagles, Doobies, Genesis, Cars...et cetera, ad nauseum. I've been flipping between KFOG, Bone, KUFX, and MAX. It's all the same and no one is digging deep.

missed the rest of the first half. Juice Newton doing Ashlee Simpson doesn't turn me on, but what the hey!
-
have no idea who they are, but they did this song Days Go By,
by Dirty Vegas. I recognize the song, but not the name Dirty Vegas. Did someone else do this that an old fart would recognize?

Yeah, and I guess there's no "finals" either.
No surprise that PM Dawn won, given the history of how the audience votes. I thought Ms. Newton was fine, and Animotion were surprisingly, er, animated. As to Missing Persons, Ms. Bozzio's ex-hubby was a missing person, no?
Chart trivia: even though Mr "dog-haired Toby jug" referred to their "3 chart toppers", none of the Missing Persons songs we think of as "hits" ever made the Top 40.
-
Well, I finally saw this here show.
The host dude? Total dog-haired toby jug. I mean, seriously.
Dale Bozio kinda scared me. She became Truman Capote or something. Yikes. She looked scared to death, too.
Juice Newton turned into Reba McIntyre! She was pretty good.
Shannon kicked ass, too. I was a little scared when she "got down" during her first song. I wasn't sure she was getting up again. You go, Shannon!
Oh, yeah- PM Dawn. They were good.
I'd totally "do" the British hausfrau from Animotion. But, that's my obsession.....
I also like how they put all the young audience hotties in the front row.

Hey Beej -- your fave "new artist", Ben Catch-My-Disease Lee is playing after work at Market & Embarcadero (by the new hotel). I'm sure you'll be there!

LOL! Riiight. Hey, I've got nothing against the guy. In fact- I seem to recall having one of those for-use-by-record-stores-only sampler of various artists (that you used to be able to get at used record tores, natch) a few years back that had something by Ben. It didn't suck. But, by the same token- he hasn't exactly inspired me to keep listening. Then he writes a catchy pop tune with a horrible chorus (at least lyrically).
I'd definitely be up for hearing something else off his new CD. But, not up enough to go down to the Embarcadero after work.
And that's the way I like it....

Can't speak to his more recent output, but when Ben Lee was an Australian rock & roll prodigy a few years back (when he was in Noise Addict) they put out a pretty great album. I've seen him open a show or two since then and haven't been repulsed, so he might actually be worth checking out. At least the price is right.

And heeeeere he is! His head is "a box full o' nothin'", he sez. It's all that beer & Coca-Cola...

just stumbled across the beginning of this last week's ep. The one before was the prior hour.
