Title: The Sound (LA), 4/9/09: it's ???
Post by: mshray on April 09, 2009, 10:24:12 AM
I'm not about to switch away from a brand new 1973 classic on KFOG, but I can't figure this out from the Recently Played button:

10:03 - Ain't Too Proud To Beg  by  Rolling Stones
10:07 - Heartless  by  Heart
10:16 - US Blues  by  Grateful Dead

hrm. the stones and Dead are fron '74, but that Heart song is (I'm guessing) an error of some sort (Larry played Mungo Jerry in the wrong year last week)

I mean Heart didn't even debut until '76, and this is from their 3rd album.  It's one thing to cue up the wrong track from a band that was active in the year in question, but this is a major brainfart.

They had Billy Joel's The Entertainer on the "now playing" widget a few minutes ago; now it's Pilot's Magic, which I place as a '75 tune. So they're kinda messed up in several ways today.

Larry did cop to his mistake on this one, but didn't say anything about Pilot, which hit the charts in May of 1975, exactly when I remember hearing it.

Do they have an "e-mail the DJ" function on their site?

Even "Killer Queen" is bit dicey (guess it was a late-'74 release but it peaked in '75). Methinks Larry needs a copy of Whitburn...

Back to back
Chicken shack,
Son of a gun
Better change your act.

in college, a housemate got hold of the "Grateful Dead Movie" on laser disc.  We had no player so rented one from the local best buy, or whatever it was.  And we played that thing like every night for a week, doing bong hits.

Here's the rest of the set from their recently played feature, ans as usual it only totals 8 songs.  What else besides Pilot got missed?

10:21 - Killer Queen  by  Queen
10:24 - Lively Up Yourself  by  Bob Marley & The Wailers
10:30 - Already Gone  by  Eagles
10:34 - The Entertainer  by  Billy Joel
10:42 - You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet  by  Bachman Turner Overdrive

When Larry copped to his Heart error, did he happen to mention just WTF he was thinking?

No, but he said he was "made well aware of it, and would be beating myself up over it" for the rest of the day. So I suspect he got calls.  And I have no recollection of what the missing tune was.

ETA: But damn, they're fast about posting the set list. The missing tenth song was:

You're the First, My Last, My Everything - Barry White

It followed the errant Heart song.

I suspect the "just played" feature only captures tracks that are in their database; anything not listed was (I'm guessing) something Larry had to bring in from home  -- the same thing used to happen with Ginger's sets on KBCO.
