Title: CG/KPOO/KCDX etcetcetc for the week of 11/24/08

NYC's WCBS-FM has gone all-Xmas, and it's a bit more rockin' and enjoyable than what the KOITs and Lite-FMs of the world usually do with their Mariah and Celine up-the-wazoo.  First "Christmas Wrapping" sighting of the year, followed by Ringo's remake of the Beatles' "Christmas Time (is Here Again)".

I'm really not ready for Christmas songs yet.  The holiday-music season kicked off for me Friday at a deli that was playing "Step Into Christmas" through a tiny boombox.  (Of course, the visuals of the season have long been in place here.)  I'm trying to talk my family into making this year's a non-THINGS-oriented Christmas in light of the economy, but the message isn't taking so far.

Karen Carpenter will melt that frosty heart, my firend.  Logs on the fire certainly fill ME with desire!

NTM and quite the OMGWTF: Billy Davis Jr (without Marilyn McCoo) doing a disco-y thing called "Three Steps From True Love".  Followed, in a similar vein by the also NTM "Love on a Disco Floor" by the Temprees.

Back to familiarity with the Sylvers, usin' the CIA's private "Hot Line".  Baby, whoooooo!

NTM: Candi Staten Island's  "Run to Me" -- NOT the BeeGees hit, but a sound-alike follow-up to "Young Hearts Run Free".

checking out a CG retro-chart show from Nov of '77 (ABBA at #1 with "Name of the Game") and bubbling under is the godawful Boney M with the godawfuller "Belfast" -- oh THAT'S a cheerful city to write a disco stomper about! ::)

But thankfully it's followed by Dorothy Moore's lovely "I Believe You", later covered by the Carpenters.

the guests on this Nov '77 retro-chart show are Status Quo (who were at #3 with "Rockin All Over the World"), and they were asked what they think of the many Status Quo tribute bands (!) around -- like the Aussie version Stat-OZ Quo (how cute).

"Yeah we've seen a bunch of 'em ... we think they're crap."

NTM and cheezy as all getout: La Belle Epoque's disco take on "Black is Black". Silver Convention were unavailable?

More VERY bad Eurodisco: Baccara's "Yes Sir, I Can Boogie" at #4. Gawd, the Brits always had horrible taste when it came to this stuff.  But "2-4-6-8 Motorway" at #5 made my day.

OMG, WLNG plays the original "Nutrocker" -- B. Bumble and the Stingers!  (ELP would cover it years later.)

I adore that D. Moore song - it's on my Ultimate Wedding mix.

Lawd! JJ on KPOO kicks things off with a Gladys Knight LP cut I'd never heard before ("Don't Burn Your Bridges"?)  and follows it with The Dixie Hummingbirds' sublime version of "Loves Me Like a Rock"

The Dixie Hummingbirds' sublime version of "Loves Me Like a Rock"

oh yeah, that was great!  and I'm digging Jackie Moore's "Precious, Precious."  very soulful voice.

Damn, TC, if I'd known you were listening, I'd've stayed logged on!  Dunno how late you stayed up, but that early Redbone tune he played, "Maggie", was one I had not heard since it was a minor hit in '71 (right before they had "Witch Queen of New Orleans"). JJ dredged up some major nuggets, including Rufus/Chaka covering "Jive Talkin'". Amazing as always.

I listened until about 10:30.  I would seriously love to see JJ's playlists....
