Judge just unearthed Retta Young's "Sending Out an SOS", which is truly a forgotten disco nugget I haven't heard since the '70s.

Followed by Chuck Berry's "C'est La Vie", which was also country-covered (by Emmylou).

Def a period thang, and it never did become widespread (except for Tommy Roe's "Sheila")

speaking of period pieces, Jerry Lee Lewis. "Whose barn? What barn? Mah barn!"

Jerry Lee Lewis is one of very few rockers to whom the term "dangerous" actually applies.  I can see why mothers were wary - his shtick strikes me as equal parts sex and violence.

And he had MORE THAN ONE wife die under mysterious circumstances! (Wife #4 drowned in a swimming pool in 1982. Wife #5 OD'd on methadone in 1983.) The "Killer" indeed.

I have serious reservations regarding Elvis. His cultural influence can never be overstated, obviously, he changed everything. But I think he's overrated as a singer, and after he left Sun, RCA neutered and sugar-coated him horribly.  Great pop records all along the way, certainly (we know how I adore "Suspicious Minds"), but an awful lot of crap too.

Bob Shannon makes a great point here: "Cara Mia" may be one of the most stunning vocal tours des forces in rock history.

But it ain't rock, it's pseudo-operatic claptrap. Jay and the Americans were a completely unnecessary group (the 4 Seasons without falsetto: er, what's the point?), tho' I like some of their jaunty pop stuff like "Let's Lock The Door".
