Title: KBCO, 5/30/08: 1989

I've got a 9:00 meeting, so I'm sure this will be the Best. '89. Set. Evah.  ;)

Starts strongly, with the Cure's creepy "Lullaby."  Questionable choice as a follow-up single to the massive "Love Song," but still a great tune.

Sigh, track 2 is the Stones, buttonin' lips and buttonin' coats.  I give this one the 86 button, myself.

I don't know why, I can't understand how this set went down the river.

Daniel Lanois' "The Maker" is a rarity - and I'd like to keep it that way.

And now - HFH! - "Sha Drahve Mah Crah-Zay," quite possibly my least favorite #1 hit of all time.

Kate Bush's "Sensual World" isn't enough to keep this from being my least favorite Ginger set ever.

Subdudes helps a little bit more.

"Sha Drahve Mah Crah-Zay," quite possibly my least favorite #1 hit of all time.

has this always been so, or has it been soured by endless repetition?  I seemed to recalll that it was quite beloved in '89 by critics as well as the public, so I looked up the Christgau Pazz & Jop page for '89.  Check out the Top Ten fave Singles:

1. Public Enemy: "Fight the Power" (Motown) 75
2. Neneh Cherry: "Buffalo Stance" (Virgin) 74
3. Soul II Soul: "Keep on Movin'" (Virgin) 51
4. Fine Young Cannibals: "She Drives Me Crazy" (I.R.S.) 48
5. Tone-Loc: "Wild Thing" (Delicious Vinyl) 41 *
6. Young M.C.: "Bust a Move" (Delicious Vinyl) 38
7. Madonna: "Like a Prayer" (Sire) 37
8. The B-52s: "Love Shack" (Warner Bros.) 36
9. Tom Petty: "Free Fallin'" (MCA) 30
10. Rolling Stones: "Mixed Emotions" (Rolling Stones)

Note that four are Katrinas, more or less (FYC, B-52s, Petty, Stones) and the other SIX have never appeared in anybody's 10@10 for 1989!

No, I hated it from the first time, though I knew I was in the minority.  And I'd liked FYC - some non-MTV station had put the video for "Johnny Come Home" in rotation - so I was all the more disappointed.

Thanks for that P&J list - I'd love to be keepin' on movin' to fight the power in a Buffalo stance right now.

Well don't just stand there -- bust a move!
