Title: KA-BOOM!
Post by: RGMike on March 25, 2005, 09:30:45 AM
Wasting no time as soon as Wing- er, Spring Break was over, they've announced the date for Kaboom is Sat May 21st. No artists announced yet.  Prepare for the usual onslaught of hype...

What perfect timing!  Have they announced a featured artist yet?  Oh, how I wish I still had my pad on the Embarcadero ...

That was the day we had last agreed to.  Maybe we can do more of an afternoon thing & people can head downtown after.  That would give y'all extra incentive to take BART to Castro Valley, then BARTing back to the Embarcadero would be a no-brainer.

Typically the headliner comes on around 7:00 & fire works start a little after 9:00.

My suggestion is to wait & see who the musical talent is. If it's someone good we might want to move the gathering to the pier, and if it's not I could just as easily show up late just for the fireworks, or blow 'em off entirely & continue the festivities at Chez 'Shray.

If Dave knows who this year's featured artist is, he's holding the cards close to his chest.  Not even a hint in his promo just before 10@10 today.

I checked Pollstar, as in the past they've posted artists and dates before the station spilled the news, but nothing so far for May 21.

I also checked Jet's routings, and they haven't announced any dates in the US til June, when they commence opening shows for Oasis. So I wouldn't rule them out entirely, but they don't have anything booked at all in that time-frame, and I'd expect that they'd have at least a few dates booked around then.

They're supposed to bust the secret on who's playing next Monday. So we should be able to start making more def. plans after that.

I'm with you on that one.

The opening act, Kathleen Edwards, is quite good. But I'm not sure it would be worth trying to negotiate thousands of rampaging Fogheads (and cutting short the doin's at Chez 'Shray) just to hear her do a 30 or 40 minute set on a windy pier. Will hope she books a date someplace else in the area that weekend.

Anyone have any clues on the John Butler Trio? They're the support act on the bill.

on Portola, just as it starts to descend, lots of people in the parking lot.  Lots of fun, but an odd weather issue.  It seems as if the wind was blowing slightly in our direction down at the pier, as a huge smoke cloud formed from the explosions, and often masked  the view.  The music seemed more subdued this year, but some really nice shells.  Hard to say it's the best, but it was fun.  Did you guys get down to the pier?

None of us who went to mshray's actually went to the pier.

After everyone else cleared out of my place, Beej & I accompanied Mr & Mrs Rod over to his pad in Alameda, where we, too, got to our perch with seconds to spare.  Actually Rod didn't get up onto the roof until about the 3rd explosion.  My kids enjoyed it, especially the ones that looked like Saturn ("...and Jupiter and Uranus, Daddy!" "...and Pluto, too Daddy").

I liked the cube ones primarily 'cause I have no idea how you can make something explode with sharp corners in the blast pattern.

Kaboom? What about Wing Ding (or whatever they called it last year)? Has it been finally phased out? It seemed like it didn't get nearly as much of a push last year.

My thoughts exactly. Wasn't it usually last weekend of March?

And where did Ali get her inside info? nothing on the KFOG website.

WingDing is always the last Friday of March because Great America always opens the last Saturday of March for the season. Although this year the park opens on April 1 (I know because my office building is across the street), but that still means WingDing would be March 31.

So I got an e-mail today announcing this year's KaBoom. No bands, just dates (May 12, the usual location). Oh and one other thing: This year they're charging admission. Ten bucks a pop, all ages. Plus a buck a ticket and $3 per order for Ticketbastard fees. Not a huge price, but not as good as free.

Hmmm...and you say they have new owners since last year. Think there's a connection? Lots of stations charge for their big promotional shows, but since this one's always been free some folks might see this as a big bite. Of course, you'll still be able to watch from the surrounding area for nada.
Wonder what capacity works out to for those two piers? 30K? More?

Foghead presale starts tomorrow.

Ya beat me (I just read the email) and... my thoughts exactly. No way it's a coincidence that this is the first KaBoom with the new owners. It will be interesting to hear the Foghead reaction (and whether dissenting views will be presented on-air).

No way no how will there be on air dissent. Dave won't even publicly acknowledge other 10@10 shows or online streams.

I think Ozomatli might be up to playing the Warfield by now, but otherwise I am SO in agreement with you. I'm gonna hang on to my ten bucks, thank you anyway.

I would be quite surprised if they took on-air debate on the subject of charging admission. Not gonna happen. Still, it'll probably sell out, mostly to the people who don't go out to any other shows during the year.

Yeah, I would skip that too.  You can see the fireworks from a second-story bar on Beale Street, as I did one year with Brandon and Victor. (Mark, were you with us?)

And fwiw, next week's Voice gives a RAVE review to the new Ozo.

They just played Guster, but Renee didn't say "appearing at KaBoom" in her backannounce, so I guess this info is Registered Foghead Only right now and hasn't been mentioned on-air.

well, they're officially talking about Kaboom on-air, including the named bands.  But interestingly, they're saying that the fireworks themselves will be "longer", meaning I guess 25-30 minutes instead of the traditional 20 or so.  So that makes them worth 10 bucks, I guess

It sure seems to me like they're soft-pedalling the KaBoom promos more than they have in past years. Dave read a promo during the morning show, but didn't mention the bands or anything, just the date, and referred everyone to the front page of the KFOG website. Guess they're a bit gunshy about taking too much heat for charging money for it this year.

Guess I'm slow, but I just realized that Kenny Wayne Shepherd is the headliner this year--I'd thought for some reason that it was Ozomatli. And given that KWS sold fewer than a thousand tickets when he played the Warfield last month (capacity 2200), I think maybe they should have been.

Interesting that they're charging 10 bucks for one of the weakest Kaboom lineups.  Crowd control should not be a problem this year.

Just for the sake of argument...first of all, KWS is a repeat headliner, so he can't really be weaker than he was 3 albums ago can he (or would you rather have Train)?  Second of all, Ozomatli is by far the best opening act I can recall (Keller Williams anybody?), and 3rd of all Guster is likewise at least as good a 2nd act as any I can think of.  Last year it was K.T. Tunstal, which wasn't bad, but Guster is better (imho).

Like I said, that was just for the sake of argument.  I think KWS is still a very weak choice, and am disappointed that I won't see anything better.   I'll probably cough up the $10 bucks just to see Guster & Ozomatli, and sit through Kenny Wayne just to keep my seat for the fireworks.

So I'm walking home from the gym this afternoon, down Valencia St, and 2 Early-Twentysomething Women are behind me.

ETW#1: (hangs up on her cel, turns to ETW#2) "They're going to the fireworks."
ETW#2: "There's fireworks? What's the occasion?"
ETW#1: "Oh, it's 'the KFOG Kaboom'", she says with rather sarcastic quotation marks around "KFOG Kaboom".
ETW#2: laughs as if "KFOG Kaboom" is the most retarded thing, like, evah.

Aren't these 2 ETWs the target demo (at least as far as the salesguys are concerned)?  Does this bode well for KFOG?

raced to our usual spot, hooked up with some friends, and got some good use of my phone headphones and FM tuner.  I really enjoyed it, and wished I was down at the pier.  My friends were from our church, and our service is being shut down in a couple weeks by our control-freak pastor, and I was really rockin' out to the church lyrics in "One" tonight.

Forgive my agnostic cynicism, but aren't all pastors control freaks?

I was at my usual spot too, nicely done as always. Best effect: the smiley faces during "Shiny Happy People".  Nicest muscial surprise: the Bono/Mary J Blige version of "One", which KFOG oughta play far more often (if they even have it in regular rotation at all).

But what, exactly, was "expanded" about these fireworks?  They lasted 20 minutes like they always do; they didn't include anything we haven't seen before. So why did they incessantly refer to them in the promos as "expanded" (except to justify the $10)?

The M2LTW's I work with and definitely NOT listening to KFOG!

I heard from a sales person at another station that the $10/15 was being used in part for charity. No details on that tho.

There's always a new item or two, I hadn't seen the ones that exploded into the shape of a star before nor the ones that rose up from the ground in slo-mo, and judging from the reactions of those around me neither had they.  But agreed that it wasn't any longer or more spectacular than ususal - if anything I think the finale segment was actually shorter.  Also agree on the two nice touches you mentioned, those stood out for me as well.

Took BART in with my younger son (5-yr-old Di-di) and when we got off at Embarcadero he told me that he saw one of his friends from school.  Sure enough, out of the huge crowd he'd picked out the mom of one of his closest friends, Marlee (all his friends are girls btw).  So we followed them to their favorite spot behind the ferry building & camped out together there.  Good location, and it was nice to have some adult conversation on the ride home to Castro Valley.

DUUUUUUUUDE!!! "Freeeeeeebiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrd"!

Listening to the soundtrack of Kaboom 2008 without the benefit of visuals, as Twin Peaks was completely fogged-in.  Nicely produced, as always, tho' a tad less creative than usual IMHO. Coulda done without Feist, of course, but that's a minor quibble. Didn't they use "Tiny Bubbles" last year too?

Biggest surprise: the gospelly cover of "Let it Be" from the Across the Universe sndtk, which surely has never been played on KFOG, like, ever.

Am I crazy or was it actually a bit shorter than usual this year? (remember the incessant flogging of "expanded" fireworks last year?)

I finally saw that movie while in Chicago; my friend Victor rented it for me.  I completely welled up during that scene.  Wow.  The movie had its flaws but it really tugged all the right emotional strings for me.  The director's a good manipulator.

We went with the whole family this year to the same spot behind the Ferry Bldg as mentioned in last years post above, and met up with the same other family.  Fog definitely affected it, about 10% of the stuf was completely obscured fromour angle & all we could see was glowing fog, the rest of the skyshots we could see at least the bottom half of.  Still worth it, but I agree that it seemed shorter.
