KPOO's stream is rather crappy today -- first time in ages that I've had probs with it.
-
stream's still kinda in-n-out, but Judge's gem of the day (so far) is Stacey Lattisaw's lovely "Let Me Be Your Angel".
-
"yoo hoo -- any of you fellas need a tight end?"
Judge plays Gaz fave "Wide Receiver" by Michael Henderson.
-
listening to the podcast of Saturday's CGSS, and Greg plays Donna Summer's seldom-heard "Winter Melody", the ballad from her "4 Seasons of Love" LP, one of several disco concept albums she did in the late '70s. Loverly.

Time once again for the annual somafm.com Xmas feed -- fabulous stuff as always. Stan Freberg as we speak. And this year they also have a "Xmas Lounge" channel. As Mr Freberg would say, "Great Stuff!"
-
"and a Japanese transistor radio" (it's a Nakashuma!)
The genius of Allan Sherman on somafm's Xmas feed.
-
ah, the pleasures of the South Park Xmas album...
-
another wacky Xmas gem on somafm: "Double-0 Santa". He's got a license to sleigh!
-
Alan Jackson takes the otherwise treacly "Please Daddy, Don't Get Drunk This Xmas" (orig done by John Denver and written by the Danoffs of Starland Vocal band fame) and turns it into a honky-tonk two-stepper. Yee Haw!
-
ah, the pleasures of the South Park Xmas album...

I Love You
You're So Hot
On That Show
("Gerald!")

Sweeney plays one of MJ's best (and least-played) '80s singles, "Leave Me Alone" -- in fact iirc it was a 45 in the UK but not the US.
-
December 18, 1971 is our AT40 flashback. #28 was the New Seekers, "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing." And at #26? Um, the Hillside Singers, "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing."
-
At 24, up 6: Honey Cone, "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show."
And the trivia -- which female artist has had the most #1 hits? -- had an outdated answer of Patti Page (!) and Connie Francis, with 3 each. That'd take a few years to change.
-
OMGWTF: Les Crane drops 12 notches to 22 with "Desiderata."
"The dull and ignorant - they, too, have their story."
-
Peter Nero's pre-rock-sounding "Theme From 'Summer of '42' " was surreal to hear at 21. Especially when followed two positions later by Aretha's "Rock Steady" and the Temps' "Superstar."
-
#14: "Stones," from Neil Diamond's "Trying Really Hard" phase.
-
At 24, up 6: Honey Cone, "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show."
the "sookie-suck you" version!
What a fabulous first hour: Charley Pride kissed an angel, The Grass Roots learned long division, Joe Simon drowned and Betty Wright cleaned up!
and J Geils are doing "Lookin' for a Love" as an "extra". What a week/what a year. OMFG! Donny Osmond!
-
"Hey Girl" is new to me, believe it or not. Is this Goffin/King songcraft? It's a cover, right?

I believe it is G/K. Org by ... Bobby Vee? Jerry Butler may have done it too, and somebody (Bobby Vinton) did a "Hey Girl"/"My Girl" medley iirc.
Dennis Coffey! Woo Hoo!

Some trivia for ya (a story I heard once and wish I'd better committed to memory): The Grass Roots were initially supposed to record "Don't Pull Your Love," but somehow HJF&R got to it first. The songwriters (Lambert and Potter?) told Rob Grill, "Don't worry, we'll write you another just like it." And so came "Two Divided By Love."

"don't pull your divided love out on me, you two."
Donny O and David Cassidy in the same hour! Swooon!

and here's Mr McLean with "American DJ Bathroom Break"

But Casey would be playing only "Part 1," right?

we'll see... at this point in time everybody considered it a "very important record" as Dave might say -- so we could get all of it. Have you noticed that some other songs are edited for time?
Ooops -- you were right! But S&C make up for it, hawn-ey!
-
"Baby, I'm a wan shoe". Which is a lot more comfortable than a brand new shoe, IMHO. (Or a brand new key, which is yet to come)
-
quite a week for teen-dreamery: MJ's still-gorgeous "Got to Be There".

"Michael Jackson and his brothers" sez Casey, hedging his bets.
-
3DN, the premier interpreters of Paul Williams.
-
naughty naughty Melanie! look at the SIZE of that, er, key!
-
The rapid rise of "Brand New Key" = a mystery to me.

Yes, although Kermit and the gang are a very close second.

Cutesy/Novelty records always rise quickly. Ms. Safka did a lovely cover of Jim Croce's "Lover's Cross" a couple of years later that, sadly, bombed -- I thought it would be a major comeback for her, but no.
Sly makes it 3 weeks at #1. And now off to Felix H.

for a second I thought:"Canned Heat did Paul Williams covers???" LOL!
-
holy flamng mother of god! the Bar-Kays' "Son of Shaft" is new to me, and s-s-s-smokin'! and followed by Willie Hutch, "Brotha's Gon' Work It OUT!"
-
Saturday CGSS, and Greg plays one of Ree-Ree's '90s highlights, "Willing To Forgive", a fabulous Babyface lyric and production.
"Ah smelled her CHEAP perfume... ha! musta come from you!"
-
ooo! Teena Marie takes us to Xanadu -- the REAL one, not that fake/cheezy Olivia Newton-John stuff.
-

follow-up: Freddie Scott did the orig in '63; it was Bobby Vee who did the Hey Girl/My Girl medley in '68.
I cannot hear "Desiderata" without thinking of the Nat'l Lampoon parody, which sadly did not make the Top 40 (it peaked at 91!).

TANC of the Week: at the exact moment that Little Steven was playing the Crystals' "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town" to lead off his 2007 Xmas Show Part I, KFRC was playing the J-5's version.
