Barry is out probably thru May at least. The armor is starting to crack...

convenient too. By May, America's short-term memory will perhaps have moved on to something other than 'roids?

Bonds can go shuck a dick. Preferably his own. If he didn't want the media to give him such a hard time, perhaps he should have played within the rules of the game, perhaps he shouldn't have been so antagonistic with people who are doing their jobs, and perhaps he should have only played the racism card where it was applicable. I gave him the benefit of the doubt for a very long time and now my patience is worn thin. If the media can give him a reason to not play, then he should by all means not play. He can go play pickup games with his friends if he still has a love of the game. Clearly he's indifferent to whether his team wins or loses, so it seems he's sticking around either for the money or the records. He'll soon not have the latter. Too bad, so sad.

yeah, what he said.
signed,
someone who never, ever liked barry bonds

sorry, but for some reason, I've always assumed the problem they had with Barry was that he was a surly black man. Surly white men get a pass, but not Barry. Barry is reputedly quite unpleasant. So fucking what!

you're probably right. but i don't like anyone who doesn't understand the meaning of the word "teamwork." except maybe fran leibovitz.

I'm still looking forward to the Giants games. Not the Bonds games. Opening day will be a GRAND event, without him.

If I have to choose between the media and Barry, it's pretty much a toss-up. Barry refused to play the media game, the media takes offense. They take every negative spin on him they can. Screw objectivity, Barry is a jerk. On the other hand, the media game is part of Barry's job. He is a total jerk. Great ballplayer, probably a cheater (who isn't -- if they can get away with it, they will do it -- corked bats, spitballs, stealing signs), big ass jerk. But the media does have it out for him, which skews their reporting.

Hey Rod, didya see that the Raiders will play in the Season-kickoff game in Sept? -- a Thursday nite game against the Patriots in NE.

The lead says it all: Is Barry Bonds so beaten down by knee surgeries, government investigations and bad press that he might retire? Or, was he just blowing off steam and looking for sympathy?
I'm betting the latter. He wants the career home run record so bad he can taste it a mile away. He's just whining and looking for some public sympathy. He might get it around here, but around the country, naaah.

I'm thinking the latter too. But it's not just around the country, you should hear what some of my A's friends are saying. Hell, I'm a Giant's fan and I don't pity him one little bit.

if everyone hates him so much, why did they (other team's fans) boo their own pitchers for walking Barry? People are funny indeed.

The Giants' 2005 ad campaign, which revolves around the invincibility of Barry, is looking particularly ridiculous right now. I can't believe they're still running those spots.

No matter how you slice it Bonds is one of the ten greatest players to play the game, and probably in the top 5. He is less surly and antagonistic to the media than Ty Cobb was, & Cobb cheated every chance he got, including going out of his way to injure players on the opposing teams. Plus he was an unreconstructed racist. Babe Ruth was an oaf, also a racist & eventually an alcoholic. I think Bonds is approximately as distrustful of the media as Ted Williams was in his day, and a) Williams never had to face 24-7 talk radio, cable sports channels, etc. and b) he hated the media even when they were busy adoring him! War hero & all that.
Did Bonds do anything wrong in his career, sure, make a list of all the 'unwritten rules' he broke. Did he cheat? If he used a banned substance, sure, but if he used substances that weren't banned at the time then he's only guilty of being unethical, NOT of breaking the rules. You can't convict him of committing a crime that didn't exist.
And if you look at his accomplishments it is hard to see how using steroids can account for most of them. Steroids create bulk, not speed and certainly they don't improve your vision. Anyone who knows anything about hitting will tell you that it's bat speed, not bulk strength that creates home runs & it's superior vision of the ball that lets you hit for average, avoid strikeouts & pile up the walks. And it's pure mental fortitude that lets you do any of those things consistently over years and years. Let's say just for the sake of argument that Bonds & McGwire BOTH used steroids (which weren't banned during practically all of Big Mac's career). There might be a bunch of home runs that without steroids turn into line drive double off the wall, and that puts an asterisk next to McGwire's eligibility for the HoF, 'cuz he was all about the longball (although if you chopped 20 feet off of every one of Mac's 683 home runs he probably still hits 600 or so). But it wouldn't take much away from Bonds' batting titles, OBA & OPS & walks records.
And let's just cut the crap with the "oh the poor media, they're just trying to do their jobs" argument. These are not journalists digging for the truth, these are media company employees trying to provoke a response that will sell papers & get people to tune in at 11:00. Barry is an idiot for opening his mouth & saying anything to them at this point in time, and frankly I don't know why he didn't do like Robert Parrish years ago. But do I applaud the media for teh way they treat Bonds? Ha! If we are really concerned about the media the BIG question is "Why don't you treat the President & Congress the same way?"

Mark, everything you said is true... but I find myself agreeing with gaz. I've also long defended Barry, but this outburst was just a bit too spoiled-bratty, even for him -- he's become Eric Cartman. "Screw you guys, I'm going home". And trotting out his kid to sit beside him was as shameless as what the Repuglicans (that's not a typo) are doing with Terry S. C'mon, Barry, you're better than that.

See that's the problem, what if Barry isn't better than that? What if he really is a spoiled jerk who whines to the media? So what? If you're a baseball fan then you should be very happy with his accomplishments as a player. I dislike the way Shaquille O'Neal talks to the media far more than I dislike what Barry says. To my knowledge Bonds hasn't insulted every person of chinese ethnicity and he hasn't falsely bragged about fucking various celebrities. Now that's reprehensible behavior! But all Shaq has to do is mutter a little "I didn't mean it the way it sounded" & all is forgiven by the media. Can you imagine if Bonds came out tomorrow & claimed that he had slept with Venus Williams? That's why the media coverage of Bonds is a joke.
