Me too--I clicked your link above, then "view your groups" and there we all were, lined up for week 1. Not that I actually joined, but whatever--I would have. Maybe I have cookies left in my system from last year?

It appears as if once we visit, we call ourselves into existence.  Now I see Urth too!  Kind of like a quantum reality state!

Well, let's keep our eyes open, just in case we need to re-register or anything, but for the moment, it seems like all we need to to is get everyone to log in.

On main kfog page there is a square graphic with 1,2,3 and 4 tabs. The #4 tab is the foorball pool.

The KFOG web site has what we in "the biz" call a slide carousel as its main component, in which there are four images, linking to four different pages, that rotate on their front page via the miracle of Flash. The football pool is # 4 in the carousel (with a bullet).

Flying blind indeed!  My head's still in baseball; I don't even know who the starting QBs are for half the teams this year!

That said, here we go:

GAZ15     NO     PHI     KC     DEN     PIT     STL     MIN     NE     WAS     TEN     SD     SEA     DET     NYG     CIN     SF 50

PS: There are two Monday Night games; which one was being used for the tie-breaker?  I pulled a number out of the air since I didn't know.

I actually do my own on ESPN's and let them take care of the results. I had invited everyone to my group. It's on the sports thread. I guess it got lost in the shuffle or no one wanted to join.

If people want to join before gametime Thursday at http://games.espn.go.com/pigskin/frontpage and search for group name: Yakuza Gaijin and enter password: CowboysSuck it's fine

If you don't want to join, it's fine too.

I missed the whole thing - a friend from SF is in town (Mark: It's Angela.) and we went to see Shakespeare in the Park. (A Midsummer Night's Dream, with Martha Plimpton the only name I knew in the cast.)

But c'mon, Mike, wouldn't you bet on a smile like this?

For those who chose to join my group, I should note that on Thursday, Saturday and Monday games the deadline for those picks is game time. For the Sunday games, it locks at first kickoff of that day 10AM PT/1PM ET. So if you get your picks in on a Thursday with Sunday/Monday games and say you pick the Colts over Patriots, you could change it on Saturday night or early Sunday morning if say Peyton Manning gets hurt and misses the game.

sorry to be competitive, but before tonight I was two points worse than you, and might catch you if the Niners win, but I think Mike has a good point (and if he'd wear a hat, he'd cover it!)

Well the home team pulled thru in the end. Nasty night out there, I left at the end of the third as I was parked way out past Gilman by the water I think. Literally backed up on a gravel incline in the far far last row of some lot way out in no mans land. I'll be happy watching the rest of the season on TV

Pretty much the rationale behind my Titans pick over the Colts.  They split close games last year with home field being the deciding factor.  Plus the Colts special teams are awful, Vinatieri notwithstanding.

Pretty much the rationale behind my Titans pick over the Colts.  They split close games last year with home field being the deciding factor.  Plus the Colts special teams are awful, Vinatieri notwithstanding.

That's exactly how I like Vinatieri: not with standing.

Dude - you mentioned this some time ago and I completely forgot.  Just registered and jumped in.  Je suis "Joe Mama."  Thanks for the reminder!

Well, at least it was close!

I'm usually happy to break even (and I will if NE holds on, regardless of who wins on MNF) but jeez: Cleveland wins? the Saints lose?

Big win for CLE. 96 pts total game. Yow.

Best I can do is 50% this week with a win on MNF. I sure don't know how to pick 'em.

On the ESPN picks, I actually had TB winning over NO but switched it on Saturday night. Then again, at the same time, I had NYG over GB and switched that one, too.

Crazy week.  I have 8 right now.  Almost had only 7, and would have been glad for it.  The Raiders may not be good, but they are certainly much improved.

Right now the KFOG scores on our group are all screwed up.  Most of us are scored 2 pts too high, Mike is 4pts too high, Geoff 2 pts too low, and only Ali's score is accurate.  Geoff & Urth should be in the lead with 10 for the week, which means Urth should be ahead overall.  And since we all picked Philly nothing will change the standings tonight.

Um, I think those are season-to-date scores -- this week's points don't get added until after tonite.

Frustrating stuff.  I thought Kevin Curtis was going to make a big impact.  And they really should have kept the lovely and talented Jeremy Bloom on the roster to return kicks, thus allowing Gaz to get kicks.

In fact they're on a roll this week -- my fave is "Randy Moss Complains He's Getting the Ball Too Much". And there's a sports graphic about the WNBA that achieves a peak of hilarity and nastiness:

Hope you saw the Eagles FAHB-yoo-luss retro unis today. Keith Olbermann just referred to their "Great Gazoo helmets". LOL!

I hadn't seen Plan 9 since it was on "Creature Features" when I was 9 or 10.  Someone who reviewed Dragon Wars recently said it was the kind of movie Ed Wood would make if he'd had access to CGI.

Geoff & I almost matched you in the morning, but didn't pick the GB win.

You will be take over 1st place now.  Preliminary scores for Wk 3 (overall):

13 - Mike (33)
12 - Mshray (32)
11 - Geoff (29), Ali (26)
10 - Gaz (30)
9 - Urth (31), Rod (29)

If the Titans win tonight Ali & Gaz will further distance themselves from Urth & Rod.  Otherwise everyone else picks up another point.

When you're losing as badly as I am, you find your pleasures elsewhere. The Eagles have a player named Winston Justice -- so immediately this came to mind:

I went 8-5 and figured someone else would better that by at least a couple games, but that seems to be the number to beat, if I counted correctly. Geoff and I both got that, and Rod and Alicat are both one behind at 7-6, with the rest a game or two behind that. And we all picked the Pats tomorrow night, so we'll all either tally one more game or we won't. So Mike and I should be tied for the group lead at 39 or 40, and Mark in second by one. (Again, assuming I counted right.)

Ummm, yes.

The betting line underdog won 9 out of 14 games outright.  And it's not like they were squeakers, either.  Of those 9 upsets, the Bills won by 3,  the Cardinals won by 7, and the other 7 teams won by at least 10 pts!

Was just looking at the scoreboard for last weekend, and if you'd gone with the crowd favorites across the board, you'd have gotten exactly 4 games right.

And the best anyone in the entire pool did for the week was 11 out of 14--pretty good, but considering the number of people playing you'd think someone would have hit on 12 or 13 of 14 games. So yeah, last week was a weird week.

Goddamn Raiders -- winning when I bet they'd lose.

Goddamn.

I'm going from first to worst this week!

Time to jump on that Silver and Black bandwagon, Mike.

I've totally lost confidence (and interest pretty much) in the Niners but can't quite make the leap across the Bay.

But seriously, I understand anyone who has issues with the great and mighty Al.

Mark's leading the Yakuza Gaijin pool that SFGuy and I are also in.  I'm near the bottom of the pack despite bouncing back a bit this week.

And our standings:

The KFOG MorningCrew are also in the same point-range as us (except Renee, who has apparently dropped out), and we usually do better than them.   This is the first week I can ever recall getting the MNF point total correct.

Just read that and had similar thoughts. But take note that he also says that NE may win the game, but not cover the 6-point spread. Since our pool is straight win-loss (no spread involved), caveat emptor.

Still, that's the kind of longshot you'd love to pick...

Or as it turned out, the kind of longshot that doesn't come in. New England kicked some Dallus booty, 48-27. Bettin' Fool, you don' know sheeeit.

And I'm glad I stuck with NE, otherwise I'd have had a really crappy week. As it is, I only got 7 going into Monday night.

I have NFL Sunday Ticket so I was able to see the NE/DAL game. Most of California had SD-OAK (including LA).

Next "big" game is DAL/INDY in couple weeks. Houston is in town so there probably be a blackout for that game so Bay Area will get DAL/INDY.

From Scott Ostler's column yesterday:

"The Raiders host the Texans in two weeks and if that game is a sellout, it will be televised locally, of course. Which would mean that the Patriots-Colts game would be blacked out in the Bay Area. I would never urge Raiders fans to stay home that day in order to make it possible for everyone in the Bay Area to watch a great TV game. I would not do that because Al Davis has about 50 lawyers warming up in the bullpen. Let your conscience be your guide."

It's the week of the visitors...

Is it too late to take back that 9ers pick? I thought maybe this week, at home, against the equally struggling Saints...nope, I didn't think. SF is getting their asses handed to them.

Looks like an interesting game tomorrow night.  After today's games Gaz & I are a point ahead of Rod & Geoff for the week. Our group is split on DEN/GB, with Gaz, Alicat, Urth & I all having picked the Packers.  So if Denver wins it will be a 4-way tie for the week, and Rod will have escaped the cellar at Alicat's expense.

ETA: but for the 2nd week in a row I have the exact same picks as he does.  Weird, I swear I arrive at my picks without looking at or thinking about anyone else's.

We're both getting conservative in our years.  I barely call upsets this year.

I was thisclose to picking 'em too, on the Alex-is-back-this-week theory. But I guess I secretly wanted 'Nawlins to make a comeback, which they seem to be doing.

Denver will surely avenge the Rockies embarrassment tonite (I hope).

There are some bad football games this week.  I will be at one -- hopefully you all will enjoy the most hyped game of the century while I watch my Raiders stumble to another low scoring loss.

BTW, nobody complains when they show awful Niner games.  SF against Atlanta -- gotta be a better game than that to show!

Good point there, tho' some would argue that the AFC has more, um, worthy  "marquee matchups" than the lowly NFC. A friend who is a HUGE Raider fan and Ninah-hata has always made that argument: that even when the Niners were great, they were great in a crappy conference.

Wish I'd had the foresight to take last year's bottom 3 teams from the NFC North to go a collective 3-0 against the top 3 teams in the AFC West.

fwiw, the AFC West & NFC West went a combined 0-7 last Sunday.  The only team that didn't lose was the 0-8 Rams...who had a bye.  Now neither division has a team with a winning record.

No prob, it's happened before with others in our group. I was just going with my gut on my picks, but after I'd entered them I discovered I'd duplicated the "crowd favorites" to the letter. Guess they're crowd favorites for a reason.

They're more likely to lose out.  Seriously, the Niners are currently the worst team in the league, Rams & Dolphins included, & going in the wrong direction.  The Raiders are 2nd or 3rd worst.

Have you SEEN Miami?  They are pathetic.  Once they lost that rb to injury (he ran ramshod over the Raiders, but then, who doesn't?), they became the odds on favorite for the first pick in next year's draft.  They may go 0-16 (tho i picked them to win this week).

But close enough.  The bottom 6 -- Atlanta, Rams, Raiders, Niners, J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets, and Miami, in no particular order -- are all extremely feeble.  If one of them beats Cincy, then they rise up to 7th worst.

The Dolphins are unquestionably pathetic, but they have lost 3 games by a field goal each, and they have been worse than decimated by injuries (as have the Rams).  The only reason the Niners won their first two games (both of which saw them win with under 200 yards of total offense), is because the Rams fumbled a punt deep in their end of the field late in the 4th quarter, and because the Cardinals didn't have the sense to bat a late 4th qtr Niners fumble out of the end zone for a touchback.  Both cases resulted in the Niners getting a ball back that in most cases they wouldn't have, which then led to last minute wins.

In a not very dissimilar alternate universe, Dante Hall fields that punt cleanly & the Rams win, the Cardinals either recover the Niners' fumble or at least bat it out of the endzone for a change of possession touchback, and the Niners are 0-8.  One missed FG by one of the Dolphins' opponents & they get at least one win.  In any case the way the teams have played lately, the Niners are the only team that is actually getting worse week in week out.  I'm going to assume the Raiders are going to let JaMarcus play pretty soon, and they might get exciting to watch.

I don't know.  It begins and ends in the trenches, and watching JaMarcus run for his life won't be any more fun than watching McCown or Culpepper do the same.  O-line woes on both sides of the bay.  Oakland's d-line isn't very good either -- 30th in run defense.

This would be a lot more entertaining if the niners and raiders were both good, and we were arguing over which one was the best in the league.

Pretty dismal time for pro football in the bay area. When has there been a time when both teams sucked so badly? When the Niner had their "dark years" in the 70s, the Raiders were in their glory, and both teams were good or great in the 80s. I guess the latter part of the 90s was kinda rough.

Like Ali, I'm sittin' at 5, and it looks like Gaz has taken the week with a mighty 7 going into tonight's game. I'll be curious to see what the best score for the week for the entire pool is tho--if it's above 10, I'd be amazed. So many upsets this week it wasn't funny.

They do themselves in. Holmgren looks like a heart attack waiting to happen.

At least the Rams have receivers.  And a QB with both arms intact.  (A. Smith is now claiming injury.)

Over on ESPN their so-called experts are sucking even more than usual this year (with the exception of Ron Jaworski, whom I have a lot of respect for)

Wickersham 84
Salisbury 87
Hoge 90
Jaworski 92*
Schlereth 93
Allen 78
Mortensen 87
Golic 81
Accuscore 87

*Jaws doesn't pick the Monday Night games that he is in the booth for, so if he'd gone even 2-7 so far he'd be leading their group over all.  I'm 7-2 in the games he didn't pick, which means he did better than I with the rest of the schedule.

Here are the guys from HBO, inside the nfl:

  Host Scores  This Week  Season

 Cris Carter  7 - 7  91 - 53
 Cris Collinsworth  6 - 8  94 - 50
 Bob Costas  8 - 6  95 - 49
 Dan Marino  5 - 9  88 - 56

I know Collinsworth doesn't pick games he's doing either, but I'm not sure if he's doing games this year, or just the shows around the games.  We should give Marino some slack because he sometimes can't help himself and picks the Dolphins.

I pick the Raiders every week now.

Are they trying to cover spreads, or simply picking winners and losers?  Allen's 78 seems astonishing.

Not a good year for former Raiders (I'm assuming that's Marcus).  Even worse for current Raiders.

Running backs don't have to be smart, just shifty.

I also noticed Mark and I were identical except for his pick of STL, so he's beating me by one and we both have TEN tomorrow.

Sir Gaz is the one really deserving of kudos this week. He's got 13 of 15 going into tomorrow night's game (in which all of us but Ali have Tennessee), one more than Mark and two more than Mike or I for the week. And since he was tied with Mark after last week, he's now pulled into a one-game lead among the group. Huzzah!

Gaz & I were identical except I had Cincy & he had Ariz, so when the Cards go that 2nd INT return for a TD, I knew my reign at the top was over.  (I'm still ahead on the ESPN board with Gaz & SF Guy, but Gaz has moved into sole possesion 2nd after a 3-way tie)

Well, you can console yourself in the knowledge that none of the rest of us did either--so no one gained any ground thanks to the 9ers victory. And we've all picked NE tonight and PIT tomorrow, so we're all going to win or lose together on those as well..

Nice for the "home" teams to win but I always count on 'em to lose so the win is a little bittersweet. I was watching the Raiders in the 4th with 4 minutes to go and hoping they'd blow it. (sorry Rod)

Kudos this week are due for Mshray, who picked an amazing 13 out of 15 games (so far), including being the only one of us to take Seattle over Philly. The rest of us had, ummm, something less than 13 and are starting to see his taillights vanishing in the dust. And we've all got NE tonight (go figure) so the margin between us will remain the same regardless of outcome.

I think you mis-counted, I was 12 for 15 & picked up my 13th pt with 44 seconds left in the game last night.

But if that darn system had allowed me to make my first pick on Thanksgiving (I was an hr before kickoff & the ESPN system let me make my pick there) I'd be in a 3-way tie for 7th overall in the KFOG pool, instead of a 9-way tie for 10th.  Oh well.

Over in the ESPN Pigskin Pick'em, where Gaz & I are in SF Guy's group and it shows you your rank and percentile score, my total is 2 pts higher*.  This currently has me in 253rd place, but there are so many thousands of participants that my percentile is 99.9%

Heh, I specifically DON'T do this; when I'm on the fence with a pick, I do it one way here and the other way at ESPN.  As you can see from the results to date, they balance out about evenly for me.

Hate to pile on the Raiders yet again (after all, they did win 2 in a row), but today... the Packers sure are fun to watch. So much for the Sports Illustrated "cover jinx".

I switched my TEN/SD pick on Friday, just an FYI.  Glad I did, but the Bolts made me nervous going to OT.

Looks like Urth leads the pack with a very respectable 13 of 15 heading into Monday Night, in which we all picked NO.

actually, I believe I have 14/15, a career high for me.  I always check your picks against mine since you'e the Gold Standard this year; I saw that we differed on 3 games and I got all 3 right (tho' you ultimately changed TEN to SD).

Actually I think Mike takes the week with 14 going into tonight (unless I miscounted, which I well could have).

I too waffled on a pick, jumping ship from the Rams to the Bengals. Glad I did.

I looked again & saw that, but lost my train of thought before I could ammend my post.  Poor Rod, he was the only one who got the Houston upset of TB correct, but then he had to go and pick his Raiders.

Yeah, hope that guy (girl?) is betting real money every week--they'd be doing well. (Of course this pool doesn't take point spreads into account--that would change things profoundly I think.)

I was shocked how many people hit 15 of 16 this week. I quit counting after 50 or so. And even more at 14 of 16.

That Neen37 person with 153 pts would be tied for first in the ESPN contest, and there are literally half a million people in that one.  That's how unlikely it is.

I turned on the TV tonight, and there they were on channel 2 sports news saying the 49'ers game was on the NFL network, so you can't watch it.  It was on NBC!  The NFL Network has handed me two losses in a row, but I'm glad about the 49'ers winning!

Jeez, I got the crowd fave in every game but one, and quite a few visitors. Might need to do further research. On the other hand, my gut has gotten me this far, doesn't pay to overthink.

Aside: anyone else think it's bullshit that you can't view your group's picks for past weeks? It's been that way as long as they've had this interface, but it still sucks.

However, since y'all may recall that Mark got hosed out of a point by getting locked out of making a pick before the game had started, I hereby proclaim this season a tie.

One tie all tie!!!

 :P

I'm fine with the intent, but exactly how can one person tie?   ;) ;D ;) ;D

PS: Don't think me a loser for posting at 10pm New Year's Eve! I'm only going upstairs to my neighbor's to ring this thing in.
You did more than I did. I was home doing regular stuff and at midnight could see the SF fireworks in the far distance. Not too exciting.

I honestly think Jax has as good a chance to beat the Pats as anyone*, and conversely, if the Pats win this one I think they go all the way for sure.

*a slim chance I'll admit, but still.

I'm not entering my picks on the Kfog site.  But Mshray stole my thunder with the Jax pick already anyway.  I was tempted to pick SD too, but Gates is hurt, so that's out the window.

Not sure if the tiebreakers are counting for anything at this point, but none of the rest of it is either, so wtf.

Also, I was just looking at last week's point totals, and it appears we're getting 4 points for each game we get right. So Mike got 16 points last week, and the rest of us got, ummm, less than that.

yes, if I remember correctly, I did well last season, but so poorly in post season, that my score dropped like a rock at that point!

Couple of interesting upsets, for sure, but I can't help thinking that this all-but-guarantees a Packers/Pats SuperBowl (no way are SD beating NE, and the NYG play GB at Lambeau).

Congrats, Urth!

Whoa--no one more shocked than I. Not sure why I took the Giants, but something felt right about that one.

Wonder if the KFOG pool device is going to continue operation for another week. Seems to me last year it went down right about now.

There's no link to a "Week 20" page and I'll be surprised if one appears before the weekend. But my picks (no surprise):

AFC: NE   NFC: GB

of the people still playing on the KFOG site, only two got both games right!

Here's an intersting bit of historical perspective: This marks the 12th time that two teams that met during the regular season eventually squared off in the Super Bowl.  Of the previous 11 cases, 4 times the regular season meeting was decided by 8 pts or more, and in each case the winner also won the Super Bowl, usually in a blowout.  In the 7 cases where the regular season game was decided by 7 pts or less, the losing team came back to win the Super Bowl 6 out of 7 times (including NE's first SB upset of the mighty Rams).
