Title: KBCO, 4/5/07: 1984
Post by: RGMike on April 05, 2007, 08:56:23 AM
From Ginger's blog, regarding her recent trip to there parts:

Quote
I'm back!  And can you tell from my sun-burned nose that I spent some quality time on the beach?  Oh wait, this is radio.  How easily I forget.  I figured it was time I enjoyed a Spring Break so I headed west for a week along the Central California coast.  Santa Cruz has a wonderful historic amusement park that practically sits on the beach so as you are riding a roller coaster or ferris wheel, you can watch the waves roll in.   I felt about 12 again as I rode the bumper cars over and over.  I just wish I could have shared the experience with my brother;  there's no greater joy at an amusement park than centering your bumper car on a sibling and then going in for the direct hit.

OMFG! BOS3 Echo & the Bunnymen, "Killing Moon" -- another band that's totally not on Dave's radar. What a great track this is.

AIDS, crack, Bernie Goetz!

I remember him as being later in the decade. Time to google.

Wow, the incident happened in Dec of '84.  Coulda fooled me.

This set's been so amazing so far, I'll overlook the double-"meh" of "Blue Jean" and "Here Comes the Rain Again".

This OMD song might be the biggest outlier of the whole friggin' set.  MAJOR kudos to Ginger.

See I remember equating Bernie Goetz with all the things we could look forward to in 4 additional years of Reagan (who'd just been reelected).

I think the fact that Billy Joel referenced him in '89 colored my recollection.

There was much speculation about Goetz's sexuality at the time -- he lived in the west Village; was single (had had a brief failed marriage when he was younger) and was quite a dorky/nerdy-looking guy.  The Voice speculated that the NY POST (which had made Goetz their personal poster boy) was covering-up his preferences because it woulda been bad for business.
