For the moment, it seems like this deserves its own thread. It's obvious this can't last, but I'd like to have a place to discuss it while it's there.
Today, on the way home from the office, I heard a Quicksilver segue: "What About Me?" and "The Fool." I was really digging the first song, thinking about how so much of this hippy-dippy song is still so painfully true. It seemed like they (KTRB) censored the "I smoke marijuana" line.
Listening to The Fool was a totally transcendant trip home for me. I was fortunate enough to see this band my freshman year at UCSB, and watch Cipollina do his magic on this song, while I was right at the front of the stage. Tears filled my eyes at the wonderful corny ending. You NEVER hear this anywhere anymore! It seems like KTRB is running the same tape over and over, but here's hoping they spread it out a bit, and fix their sound problems, once they officially start.

If they did that's pretty unforgiveable, given what they're attempting to celebrate. "What About Me" was released as a single, tho', so it's possible the single version was edited and that they used that version without realizing it.

Ironic then that they played a single version followed by an ultimate album track!

on the way home yesterday, just after hearing Morning Dew, a different promo came on, and asked listeners to give input on what kind of music they wanted the station to play. From this point of view, it looks somewhat exactly what they are saying: it's a test of the transmitter (fixed the damn stereo inputs!) and a tribute to some classic music. At some point the SF Sound oldies will go away, and be replaced by who knows what. Kind of a poignant thought, and made me appreciate the time I've been able to listen even more.
it was followed by Blue Cheer's Summertime Blues!
Another spin of the Airplane's "Comin' Back to Me" this AM, but I still loved hearing it.

Of course, nobody signs on a 50,000-watt radio station without know ing what their format is gonna be a month from now. Those promos are mostly BS.
I heard Syndicate of Sound's "Hey Little Girl", I never realized they were from San Jose.

Yeah, they played at my high school yearbook dance.

Country Joe and the Fish "Masked Marauder"
one of my favorites!

I don't know if the 'tribute' is over, but since sometime yesterday, all I get is static on 860
-
when I got out of school, and got in the car, it was back on, same playlist. Who knows?

They must've been doing some transmitter work -- the signal actually sounded much cleaner to me this afternoon. And I heard the uncensored version of "What About Me"
-
Heard "Hell in a Bucket" earlier -- first example of '80s Dead I think they've played. Then I heard 2 fave JA tunes, "Lather" and "Crown of Creation". I still remember seeing them do both tunes on the Smothers Bros show one Sunday nite -- Grace was wearing weird, dark make-up. Not blackface, but dark. Never quite figured that out.
-
OMGWTFLOL! the Mojo Men with the "hit" version of the Buf Springfield's "Sit Down I Think I Love You" -- this is only the 2nd or 3rd time I've heard this in my entire life.
-
here's a Steve Miller version of "Come On In My Kitchen" that's new to me.
(Turns out it was on The Joker LP -- live'n'learn!)
-
I think it's odd to hear this, so far out of the time frame of the other songs. I'd give up hearing this in trade for something from "Forever Changes." I would prefer a format where the kind of music that was being played in the ballrooms of the late 60's was featured. Besides the local bands, it would feature Butterfield, Doors, Aretha, Charles Lloyd, etc.

From what I've read, it was indeed supposed to be blackface, which Grace punctuated with a "black power" upraised fist. I've never seen this for myself, though. Off to You Tube . . .

Ah! Here we go:
JA on Smothers Brothers, 12/15/68 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InZS5jQTSvc)
-
the Airplane's "Martha" into Moby Grape's "Omaha."

Well, the jig is up: Ben Fong-Torres reports in the Chron that the new format begins March 15th -- just what SF needs... another talk station.

just static this morning

Brad Kava reports that when the talk format begins on March 15th, the music will continue on Fri & Sat nights:
"On weekend nights, the station will adopt the “music of San Francisco'’ format that has been pleasing listeners now for the past month. But it will include new as well as classic rock.
Programmers will accept discs from local bands for consideration, and they will coordinate that with live performances at local clubs. Music will run from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights. There will be guest DJs and a real Bay Area feel to the shows."

the last song I heard on the way into work this AM was fittingly, Quicksilver's The Fool. I allowed myself to hear the a tast of next cut (Dead version of Watchtower) and after school, they are playing clips of old SF radio. Somewhat interesting, and odd.

I have to wonder if the guys in Quicksilver aren't going to see a sudden spike in their mechanical royalties for the months of February and March. Seems like every time I turn on 'TRB I hear one or another of their songs. Heard What About Me last night, and several others. They can't be getting too much airplay elsewhere.

Yeah, I've been hearing (until tonight) lots of Quicksilver that isn't even that good! Whoever's programming must really like it! But some of it is so hot, it makes me wonder why it no longer gets played on KFOG. Their version of Mona from Happy Trails is awesome and powerful.
-
been lots of Tom Donahue airchecks, and even letting the music spin now and then. Heard the long version of Time Has Come Today on the way home today, Youngbloods' Get Together,' Leon Russell's Shootout on the Plantation, and Donovan's Atlantis. It's good to hear Tom's voice again.

I'm hearing the Chambers Bros "Time" right now. These airchecks are just amazing. I'm a total geek for this stuff.

It's just bizarre for someone to play all this cool stuff, knowing it's just going to be another AM talk radio thing. We'll see how this plays out. Ironically, just before they stopped the all-music format, they were adding songs to what seemed like a static list.

So far, we're still waiting for these weekend music shows -- they've been running "best-of" tapes of their weekday syndicated crap. I emailed them a month ago and they finally replied yesterday:
"We have been delayed by technical issues, but hope to launch the SF Sound within a few weeks"

Certainly one pretty major disconnect between the style of the 'test' and the current crap.

Well, it took 'em long enuf, but they've finally gotten their act together. Got this in an email today:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
“SAN FRANCISCO SOUNDZ” RETURNS TO KTRB AM 860 WEEKEND NIGHTS
San Francisco, California (May 25, 2007) - - KTRB AM 860 today announced the return of its popular “San Francisco Soundz” program on Saturday, May 26th. “San Francisco Soundz” features the music of homegrown Bay Area bands from the mid-sixties, including such artists as Janis Joplin (Big Brother & the Holding Company), Sons of Champlin, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Santana, Creedence Clearwater, and Jefferson Airplane.
The concept for “San Francisco Soundz” was originated earlier this year by KTRB’s Program Director, Kevin Barrett, as a tribute to classic San Francisco music in honor of KTRB’s debut in its new Bay Area home. The response from listeners was so overwhelming that Barrett and KTRB’s General Manager, Jim Pappas, decided to revive the program in order to better serve the station’s audience. “San Francisco Soundz” will air every Saturday and Sunday evening from 7:00 p.m. to Midnight.
...er... "soundz"?

Got home a little before 9 and turned it on -- wonderful stuff, as usual. Janis, Dead, etc. Even Steve Miller's "Shoo-Ba-Da-Doo-Ma-Ma-Ma-Ma". And they say he couldn't write lyrics...

I forgot to tune in. I listen almost exclusively to KPIG in the car (except for Giants games, which I may have to give up soon too!)
