'CDX-ing today.
-
well hush mah puppies -- it's country Steve Miller, "Dance Dance Dance". Haven't heard this in a gazillion years.
"you're mah honey pumpkin lover
you're mah heart's dee-light"
Yee-haw!
-
OMFG! Mink DeVille's Spanish Harlem-y version of "Hey Joe". Fabulous.
-
Harry's puttin' de lime in de coconut, mon.
-
wow, Leon Russell's hommage to Little Richard, "Crystal Closet Queen".
-
"Help Me Girl", an Animals tune I don't think I've ever heard, tho' it was a #29 charter in '66. Very pop, almost Petula Clark-ish.
-
woo hoo! JS, Ridin' the Tiger.
-
Chilliwack (Canadian, I think) doing "Don't Stop", a very good H&O imitation.

could there be some regionalism at work? All the Animals hits were pretty big out here, this one included.

Indeed. Those were the days when regionalism was the rule rather than the exception.

can't get to VIP due to our 'net problems, but I did connect with CG, and Greg is subbing for Dean! Jimmy Ruffin, "Hold On To My Love".
-
Oy -- Boney M's dreadful "Ma Baker", the epitome of what is referred to in Turn the Beat Around: the Secret History of Disco as "english-as-a-second-language Eurodisco trash". And I guess no one had the heart to tell them it was Ma BARKER, not Baker. Yikes.

"so you go to the village
in your tie-dyed jeans
and you stare at the junkies
and the closet queens
it's like some pornographic magazine
and you smile"
CDX plays Mr Joel's masterful "Captain Jack" -- I've never heard this on SF radio, but it was a NYC staple, since "Captain Jack" is a specifically Noo Yawk reference (Captain Jack was a local kiddie show host in the '60s).

I never knew that - I thought it was a reference to Jack Daniel's, as in, you're gonna get shitfaced tonight. Nice description of Christopher Street either way.
(But I also liked the Kevorkian parody: "Captain Jack will help ya die tonight")

Indeed, it works in multiple ways, which is why it's so great. ("Captain Jack" has also been interpreted as the nickname of a drug dealer.)

Greg kicks off CGSS with the Staples' fab-yoo-luss cover of "Slippery People". DAY-um!
-
ooo! Herbie Hancock, "Rockit"! Scratch that thang! Why this wasn't a major pop hit I'll never know.
-
Shannon's ode to Mr Peabody: "he's dancing his Wayback to me"

Just turned over to KRSH for the Friday Soul Patrol and instead am hearing Werewolves of London, followed by the Jayhawks' excellent Waiting For the Sun. Great songs both, but not exactly soulful.
So is the Soul Patrol lady on vacay or have we had a programming change? Hope it's the latter!
ETA: Scratch that. They appear to be running just a bit behind today. They have now returned to what appears to be the usual programming. Yowzah!

well, here's somebody doing "Fool in Love", tho' it ain't Ike & Tina. Hrm.

Maybe I was right the first time. They played an old R&B tune I'm not sure of the name of ("you're just a fool, but you're only in love...how can he treat you that way when he's such a good man?") and then followed that with a Chris Isaak soundalike. Def. not Soul Patrol. What be up? Lawdamercy!

Def not Soul patrol, is right. It's not listrd on the website any more, and the midday person is now a guy. Oh well, back to CGSS...
-
One of Greg's listeners, a 42-year-old gay guy, sez Greg doesn't play enuf "gay disco songs" ... Um... are there any other kind?
anyway, he plays Evelyn Thomas' "Hi NRG", which I haven't heard in a dog's age.

I shot off an email to their studio address inquiring what's up, so I'll let ya know what I hear back.

Ms Thelma Houston with her wonderful, underrated follow-up to "Don't Leave Me...", "Saturday night (keeps shining on my sunday morning face)", which sounds like it could be a Harold Melvin cover too, tho' I'll have to investigate that. I can certainly imagine Teddy singing it.

Well, apparently it's not a Harold Melvin cover, but didya know Ms Houston did an album of duets with Jerry Butler that includes a medley of Chicago's "If You Leave Me Now" and the BeeGees' "Love So Right"? Damn, gotta get my hands on that.

Kool & the Gang, singin' 'bout Miss Lead. "She's as heavy/As a Chevy" -- well, duh, she's made of lead. She married Mr Wood and they had lots of little pencils.
-
OMGWTFLOL! Silver Convention, "Get Up & Boogie" -- That's Right!
-

A true forgotten classic -- one of my favorites from the band, and almost certainly their most "rock" song. I always associate it with the Pointer Sisters' similarly forgotten "Dare Me."
