Yeah, well last year they said it was $200 bucks based on our usage.  So I think they take a look at the stats before coming up with a number.  And our stats have been zeros for about a month now.

I wonder why they decided to become more competitive all of a sudden.  I think at this point the money is not an issue, so you guys decide where you want to live.  I kind of dig phpBB (needs more remodeling, but I'll wait to see if we stay or not!) but I'm using it less now that I'm in school, so mainly it's up to you American-productivity-sucking folk who sneak on during the work day!

I have gotten used to the new app here and like the separation of topics.  What's the cost for this?

If we didn't do this, we'd be brainless work-bots.

For the moment, it costs nothing.  We are essentially hiding under the skirts of one of my other sites.  If we want to get our own place, and divvy out email addresses like Alicat@10at10Club.com, it looks to be about $50/year.  If for some reason we started sucking up huge amounts of bandwidth and storage space, we'd have to look deeper.  At the moment, it doesn't look too bad.

Some stats:

Number of posts:     2741     Posts per day:     86.21
Number of topics:    226    Topics per day:    7.11
Number of users:    12    Users per day:    0.38
Board started:    18 Jan 2005 09:04 pm    Avatar directory size:    70.03 KB
Database size:    2.61 MB

It's your call clubmembers.  Since discserver seems to have come to their senses, if you guys think it's worthwhile, you could pay them $50 just to sit there and do nothing, and have the old site as an archive location.  If we could get Rod to import the SQL file somewhere, somehow, we could store it elsewhere too.

here's a link to some web hosting built around message boards.  It's a bit more expensive than what I'm used to, but there are several of you with more experience than I in this matter, that might have an opinion about this kind of option:

REVIVE!

Bringing this to the top of the queue b/c Saturday is the deadline to renew the old board.  I'm OK with sticking with this board going forward, but I think a few people wanted to try and archive the disc.server's content.  Indeed, a lot of good material there for the archivists among us.  Anyone into the task?

I'm not able to do it; I was thinking it might be worth another $50 to you guys to just keep it around another year as a searchable thingy.

Actually, if we do nothing, except for post on it every once in a while, it wont go away.  It will have ads on it, but it will still be there.  It goes away if nobody posts on it for six weeks, I think.

my memory was that they would somehow give you an SQL dump, but I don't know how to deal with that anyway, but you might see if you can get it, just in case.

I just posted over there in case the 6 weeks rule is really true, the latest post was 6 weeks old as of yesterday.  I think if it is free with ads & we are only keeping it around as an archive, then let's just do that.  I'm sure we can just keep a thread going with monthly posts to maintain it.

We don't know that they would give us anything.  I'm still trying to find out if we can get something from them.  There is no automatic way to get stuff.
