Title: KBCO, 7/27/06: 1973 redux
Post by: mshray on July 27, 2006, 08:56:01 AM
...at least I'm pretty sure that's what Bret just said when my player kicked in.  Could be a real nice morning.

Starting kind of early with another Macca track.  Also repeat mention of the Sears Tower.

BOS #1 "Band on the Run"

BOS #2 to Broooce.  I'm lately really getting into this period for him; it makes great running music for me.

I for one could not be happier.  The rain exploded with a mighty crash as we fell into the sun!

What an amazing year he had in '73 -- Red Rose Speedway was an improvement (IMHO) over some of his previous hit-and-miss output, and included "My Love", his biggest solo hit up to that point, and he followed that with "Live & Let Die" (which Dave played this morning in the 6:00 hour).  Then Band.... which is clearly his best-ever LP.

So yes, BOS1. And here's #2 from Broooce.

I've got a 10:00 meeting, so I'll miss it either way, but I was thinking it wouldn't be too big a stretch to hear '73 from Dave too, since we hadn't been there since May 30.  But then I realized we haven't heard '72 from him for precisely three months.  So who knows?

Either would be wonderful. But I've got a bad '90s feeling about Dave's set today.  Which means KINK Theme Set day for me if so.

BOS Martin & Sissy.

NO IDEA who this robbin' the mini-mart song is

OMG!  Jimmy Buffett, "Peanut Butter", I really still love his first 5 or 6 albums, before anyone ever called themsleves a Parrothead.

boo to David Essex, this really is a '74 song, released in, like, Dec '73 in the US, tho' it was a UK hit earlier.

In both cases, I was pretty sure I knew who was singing, but hadn't heard them previously either...

Make it a third that I've never heard.

Was a lot of early Jackson this countrified?  Might be time for me to explore that part of his catalog.

I don't really consider this countrified (now the Buffet we heard -- that was countrified) but I really urge you to delve into this LP.

I'd forgotten about him being in Godspell.  My folks took us to see that off-off Broadway just weeks before the LP soundtrack came out & "Day By Day" became a hit single.

BOS for me. And yes, it kind of is. He was a contemporary of the Eagles, early in all of their careers, came out of the Troubadour folk scene in LA in the early 70s. See also Linda Ronstadt, numerous others.  Def. check out For Everyman. the album that gave us today's song (and was named for it).

BOS to Rev. Al, another one of those cases where I heard the hit cover (UB40) before ever hearing the original.  It's happened far too often with me.

Yet another BOS, The Reverend Al.  This set is quite different from Bob's, but not any dropoff in listening quality.

Agreed. Given that Bob is probably under more pressure to "play the hits" than Ginger is, his set was amazingly good.  Ginger's propensity for digging deep is something else again.

Speaking of -- Buckingham-Nicks?  WOW!

And is this Buckingham Nicks? Sounds like The Goat to me. In any case, it's not one of the tracks that DM has played. Big props to Ginger for a very nice set of rarities and gems.

Wow, yet another obscurity, Buckingham-Nicks "Long Distance Winner", not one of the handful that Dave plays from this album.  Wonder if Ginger is going to give us an update on this LP's availability on CD like Dave always does.

BOS Amer Graffitti clip -- that "rock'n'roll's been goin' downhill ever since Buddy Holly died" is one of my favorite quotes from that movie. They omitted the "goddamn surfer shit" part, and for years I would say that whenever a Beach Boys song came on.

I'm guessing the answer is Desperado, but I'd never heard that trivia before.

not to nit-pick, but Ginger skated right by the fact that she played the wrong EJ song (TMTTP is from his first LP, no?).
