I dig this Blues show that precedes Judge on KPOO.
-
Sons of Champlin!
-
KPOO's Judge is accenting the '60s today, at least so far. obscure Marvin & Kim, and now the Iceman hisself, Jerry Butler. Sublime.
"Let me put this hamburger down... I don't want no malt... I wanna DANCE!"
Archie Bell, "I Just Can't Stop Dancin'". Woo Hoo! and --- WTF? -- followed by a version of "The Horse" with lyrics!
-
what sounded like Fancy Miss Nancy Wilson doing a jazzy "Can't Take My Eyes Off You". And now Sonny Charles/Checkmates Ltd "Black Pearl", one of Phil Spector's shining moments in a career chock-full of 'em.
-
nice memories of that.
-
Hissing of Summer Lawns
"He gave her a roomful of Chippendale"
and into Aretha "Natural Woman"
-
even Judge comes up with a turkey occasionally: The Unifics, "Beginning of My End", A late-'60s throwback to those maudlin teenage-death songs, and not even a very well-written one at that.
But he bounces back with Steppenwolf's "(God Damn) The Pusher Man"! Lawdy!
-
oogum boogum! Judge casting his spell with Brenton Wood.
"when you wear your bell-bottom pants
I just stand there in a trance"
-
Fifth Dimension, "California My Way" -- now THAT's an obscurity!
-

WLNG Nugget o'the Day: Frankie Valli with Kenny Nolan's "My Eyes Adored You". Didja know Kenny Nolan also wrote "Lady Marmalade"? Talk about range!
and followed --OMGWTF! -- by Cher, "You Better Sit Down Kids". Still my fave of hers.

OMG, I forgot he wrote "Get Dancin" (I bet the part about "my chiffon is wet, darlings" wasn't his, tho' ). And Jim Gilstrap's "Swing Your Daddy" is a CG and VIP staple that somehow missed out on being a hit in the US, but which has become a favorite of mine.
-
Been VIP-ing today; here's a new one on me: a woman named PP Arnold (who?) doing "First Cut is the the Deepest". Sure beats Sheryl Crow's version.
Followed by the Tams, "There Ain't Nothin Like Shaggin'" (no, the Shag was a dance -- git yer mind outta the gutter!)
-
VIP Surprise of the day: "It Doesn't Have to Be That Way", the Blow Monkeys with one of their follow-ups to "Diggin Your Scene" --similar but quite enjoyable.
-
and here are the Pointers with "Should I Do It" one of their '80s singles that shoulda been a bigger hit.

never heard of it! and you're spot on about the blow monkeys tune.

"Should I Do It" is an uptempo early-'60s-style thing, complete with nifty sax solo. Think "He's Sure The Boy I Love" and others of that Phil Spector ilk. In fact, I'd've loved to've heard Darlene Love cover it.

Tom Waits sublime "Hold On."
-
Willie Nelson's version of "The Maker" now. I have never heard this on the radio! If you missed it, and want to hear it, email me.
-
Leon Russell's "Stranger in a Strange Land"
Is it true that KFOG never plays this? It was a total KSAN staple back in the day.

I've never heard it in regular rotation, or on 10@10.

Been CG-ing, and Dean just played guitar rave-up version of "Sabre Dance" by Love Sculpture, Dave Edmunds' early band.

Wretched excess, but I've got it if anyone needs a listen. Pretty long.

This must've been a single edit they played.
But OMG, here's the Purple One himself, "Diamonds & Pearls"!
D to the I to the A to the M!
-
last thing I expected from CG today: the new Eagles single, which I didn't even know existed. "No More Cloudy Days", a Glenn Frey number. Rather pretty, actually.
-
some country-pickin' version of "Another Brick in the Wall!"

My playlists back to Nov. 2004 show they've only ever played Leon Russell once:

some country-pickin' version of "Another Brick in the Wall!"
There was a bluegrass Pink Floyd tribute LP a few years back, I'm assuming that's it. Also, the Austin Lounge Lizards did a bluegrassy cover of "Brain Damage".
-
WLNG Nugget o'the Day: Paper Lace, "The Night Chicago Died", which their jock backannounced as "The Night Chicago Tie-Dyed".
-
OMGWTFLOL-of-the-week: WLNG plays the Monkees' "DW Washburn", which I haven't heard in decades.

Hey -- anybody have a working (and free) KPIG stream? I know, I know I shouldn't be cheap, but I listen so rarely...
This one seems broke: http://64.236.34.196:80/stream/1001
Thanks.
-
Wow, the KRSH stream sounds harrible. As if somebody hooked up an FM radio to their PC and started streaming it. Pity they can't get a real feed from the board.
OTOH, who cares -- they're playing a new (?) Johnny Cash tune I've never heard before: God's Gonna Cut You Down.
Dayam that was good.

is there such an animal (pun intended) as a "free" KPIG stream? I thought it was subscription only, then 6 months ago they were talking about it being free but I could never get it to work.
When the 1510 AM version went on the air last year, they were broadcasting a version of the stream for a while -- basically one of the 2 channels, which meant anything that used "true" stereo (like most Beatle tunes) was missing half the song.
-
Thank God it's CGSS! Rick James and Teena Marie, "Just a Sucka for Yo' Love"!

I had a great stream, and a great Soul Patrol Lunch!
sometimes, the stream just craps out, and gives me this buzzing sound.

Was the Floyd cover Luther Wright & the Wrongs?
Johnny Cash's new album (American Recordings Vol 5: Let's Cash In While We Still Can) is #1 in the nation right now. Dubious distinction: at about 88K albums sold, it's the lowest-selling #1 debut album of the Soundscan era.

Dave Mason's "Shouldn't Have Took More Than You Gave." I close my eyes, and can see the multicolored vinyl spinning on my turntable! aaaahhh!

I think KRSH is making you younger, Geoff. At this rate you'll be a child by the end of the month!

"I Am a Child" by Buffalo Springfield?
-
WLNG Nugget o'the Day: "It's Late", Ricky Nelson's shameless recycling of "Wake Up Little Suzie".
-
WLNG Nugget #2: Sandy Posey, "Born a Woman" -- amazing (if muddled) lyric for its time.
and #3: Bobby Sherman, "Hey Little Woman"!

OMGWTFLOL! Cat Mother and the All-Night Newsboys, "Good Old Rock'n'Roll", from '69 -- I seem to recall this was produced by someone important. Sly, maybe? Zappa? Great lost record, in any case. ShaNaNa for smart people.

Try Hendrix!
per AMG: In 1969 the group signed to Polydor Records, with longtime friend Jimi Hendrix agreeing to produce their debut LP The Street Giveth and the Street Taketh Away — supported by a series of appearances as Hendrix's opener, the record generated Cat Mother & the All Night Newsboys' lone Top 40 hit "Good Old Rock and Roll," a medley of pop classics from the late 1950s.

Thanks both of you -- It's a fun record that got quite a bit of NYC airplay. Don't know if it's on Dave's radar, but he should pull it out in a future '69 set.

I've never heard this song; I'm jealous.
OTOH, I've been spending the early evening at work listening to Deep Tracks for the first time in months. Great, great stuff, including FMac's "Warm Ways" and presently a Right On Marvin Twin-Spin. Can anyone recommend a FM greatest-hits comp of just the material through '75? I need to introduce my brother to stuff like "Hypnotized" and "Heroes Are Hard to Find."
Ooh! Eli's a-coming! A BROKEN HEEEEAAAARRRRTTTT!!!!

Admirable quest indeed, although the rest of the world would like to pretend FM didn't exist before 1975. There's a good import of the best of the Peter Green era http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009YX6D/ and "The Chain" is pretty good, but has post-75 stuff too. You can grovel lots of MP3's from me (purely for review RIAA!) but you can't really go wrong if you get all the CD's from Future Games through Heroes.
Kiln House is cool, but somewhat anachronistice in the big picture.
