Title: The work thread
Post by: urth on June 06, 2006, 05:28:21 PM
The entire CNET headquarters is currently all abuzz because it seems that Dave Navarro is in the building to do an interview for our sister site, MP3.com.

Damn, where'd I put that transfer request form?

Overheard just now at Jane:

"I've been sober for eight days."
"Why?"

Do any of you know what "P.O.P." means in the music-business setting?  I'm imagining something like "Point Of Play" (e.g., radio stations) but I really don't know.  The reason I ask is that Sony BMG called me regarding a potential proofreading-oriented position.  I've pasted the deets below in the hopes that any of you might clarify for me.

Thanks!
Gaz

I think that's right, in other words any collateral that goes into the store with the merch.

Usually that is exactly correct.  It refers to materials created for in-store displays of products, like a Coors cardboard display of Elvira hawking beer cans!

Thanks, everyone.  I have an interview with them tomorrow morning at 10:30.  Not terribly optimistic -- I'm not sure it would work for them or for me -- but I feel like I should go just to establish some face presence at that company.  Jane has been good to me, but my long-term prospects are decidedly not in twentysomething women's fashion.

so what DOES one wear to a job interview when it's 105 degrees?

'LNG has been doing "extreme heat warnings" all afternoon.  Hope you're keeping cool!

If P.O.P. is the main focus of this position, it stands to reason that they need the most anal retentive, nothing-slips-by-me type of person they can get.  It's easy to correct something on the web & relatively painless to put a little correction note in the next issue of a periodical.  But if it's gotten out there into the hands of consumers, it could cost millions to fix an error after the fact.

Thank you all again!  So I had the interview today, and it went way longer than expected.  Actually met with two people, one in HR and one as the manager to whom I'd be reporting.  I knocked the proofing exam out of the park -- they each said it was the best they'd seen in months -- but it turns out proofreading is but a minor part of the job.  Mostly the job requires staying on top of people to make sure they finish their piece of things on time (such as the various components of a billboard ad: getting the photo approved, the layout confirmed, the legalese, the corporate logos, the final text, etc., each of which is handled by a different department).  The manager, Barbara, suggested that I might be "too nice" to lay down the law as is sometimes needed.  And I'm not sure about the prospect of working with her: She's got a rather boisterous, potentially polarizing way about her, and seemed weirdly so during the interview.  (Example: We were talking about how style guides are guidelines rather than hard-and-fast rules, and I gave as an example the fact that certain rules go out the window on Jane's cover in the name of making things stand out or "pop" more. She interjected, rather after I said "Jane," with a turned-up nose, "because Jane Pratt says so!"  I found it inappropriately bitchy, not to mention out of date (Pratt hasn't been with the mag for several months), but wasn't about to get in the way of her riff.

So we'll see how it plays out.  If I get, and take, the job, it'll be a fascinating learning experience on the business side of the record industry.  Novel material, at the very least.  On the other hand, may I not live in interesting times for a little while, I could use the rest.

OK. This is a tech question but related to work. Need help.  I clear cookies and other stuff regularly. How do I get rid of this site from auto pop up in the address bar? Everytime I type in www.1, this site's URL auto fills in. I don't want anyone potentially being on my computer and getting this site to pop up.

If you're using Firefox, go to Preferences under the main Firefox menu, go to the "Privacy" tab, and under "Saved Forms," uncheck "Save information I enter in forms and the search bar."  Other browsers probably work similarly.

Hope this helps!

PS: I didn't get a callback on the Sony job, so I assume I didn't get it.  Just as well.  Game plan now is to just work for Jane and Time through the year's end and make plans to move back to SF early next year.  Presently wanderlusting through Craigslist apartment ads as I've definitely had my fill of NYC life for now.

IE is similar but not identical. Under the Tools menu, go to Internet Options. Click the Content tab, then go down and click the AutoComplete button, then uncheck the box for Web addresses. That should do it, but then you will have to type out all web addresses.

It just occurred to me that you could try this: If you're going away for your computer for a long time (week-plus), whatever internet browser you're using now, make some other one the default browser right before you go away. The replacement browser wouldn't have your history to auto-fill those things in.

What browser besides IE would be good on the PC? Would I take the IE shortcut off the desktop?

I'd recommend Firefox. I was a longtime IE devotee. But a few months ago we got some new tools that are optimized for FF so I had to start using it as well, and have to say I am just about converted to FF entirely now (except for our other tools that are optimized for IE--arrrggghhh). Very smooth operation and lots of nice conveniences, such as tabbed browsing (which, admittedly, the new version of IE now offers too).

It just didn't seem like the right opp or the right time.  And if that means I don't get to work for Sony BMG, I can live with that.  There's more than one road to Oz, ne?

So the reasons I turned down the Sony BMG job, in order:

1. The woman I'd be reporting to struck me as difficult, snarky and overly critical, and I didn't think I'd enjoy that kind of working environment.
2. The position was a three-month temp gig with no guarantee of continued employment afterward.
3. They wanted me to start the following Monday, which would have forced me to give no notice to Jane, which I felt would be gauche and bridge-burning.
4. It would have been a pay cut of at least $3/hr from my current gigs, which would add up.
5. Better the devil you know: I like my current gigs.

But as that door's closed, this one's become visible (if not yet open) with CNET in SF.  Jim, I've already submitted my application, as I had a good feeling about this one.  I feel ready to make this happen.

Big stuff going down at the Internet Farm here today. CEO, general counsel, and VP of HR all resigned this am. Probably won't affect me too directly (at least for now) but hate to see what this'll do to the stock price.
