It's VIP's first day of official "live" programming. Weather forecasts for Scotland and everything! But I'll still switch to Judge on KPOO at noon.
-
ooh! a Motown twin-spin! post-Diana Supes, "Nathan Jones", and Kim Weston's fabulous, forgotten "Helpless".
-
OMG! New Edition, "Mr Telephone Man"!
-
Queen Latifah and Monie Love! "Ladies First"!
-
VIP has been all Motown.
Got to have you back (Isleys)
Four Tops-Its the same old song
Marvin
now the Velvelettes, He was really saying something
Can't locate a recently played link.

Judge on KPOO is playing a scratchy vinyl side of live Temptations (circa mid-60s, I'd wager). After some obvious early hits ("My Girl" etc) they've segged into covers of "Yesterday" and "What Now My Love".

For some reason, Kingfish used to do a killer version of this tune, and the guitarist, Robbie Hoddinot, was fabulous in invoking that Junior Walker sax vibe. I always thought Junior Walker's lines were very guitar-like.

Love it when The Drive' does a short set on Tuesday -- over to KPOO for JJ. Marvelettes, "Heartbreak Dead Ahead". And the 5 Stairsteps (pre-"Oooh child") with "Don't Waste Your Time".
-
VIP-in'. I was fearful that once they went "live" the music might become more mainstream and focus-group-approved -- but no worries, they're still awesome.
Songs by the Moments and the Contours I'd never heard, and now the Marvelettes, "My Baby Must Be a Magician". We used to change it to "my baby must be a mortician, 'cause she always makes me stiff."
and now the Philly Devotions (?) whose lead singer sure sounds like the guy from the Stylistics.
-
Checking out CG, since I couldn't really listen much while I was their (their AM signal in Wales totally sucks).
And Dean's playing Crazy Horses right now, if any one cares!
-
Gwen Guthrie, "Nothin' Goin On But da Rent"!
no romance without fi-nance!
You gots to have a J-O-B/If you wanna be with me!
-
wow, a reggae-flavored "Moon River" by Greyhound, the same guy(s) who did the orig of 3DN's "Black & White". Quite nice.
-
Hey Mike & anyone else who ever listens to the Underground Garage, check out this interview of Little Steven. It's really very good.

He is the MAN . Excellent.
-
CG's Dean salutes Billy Preston with "...I'm Born Again". Awww.
-
WLNG Nugget o'the Day: Macca, "Helen Wheels"
followed by Chairmen of the Board, "Pay to the Piper" -- ass yo' mama!
and one I haven't heard in ages: El DeBarge, "Who's Johnny?" from... name that movie!
-
still more great stuff on 'LNG (and a cool juxtapsition): Motherlode's "When I Die", followed by "Born to Be Alive".
-

Yep, it sure is--thanks for passing that on. Nice to know that there are guys out there like Little Steven, still keeping the faith. Kind of a bummer to hear him say he doesn't know if he'll make any more records, but I suspect that's something that could change at any given moment, as soon as he has something to write about.

and wouldn't "Sun City" be the highlight of any 1985 set? I'd expect it from Rob (it got heavy airplay in NYC, as I recall) or Ginger sooner or later.

Short Circuit, wunnit?
You don't really see many soundtrack hits these days. Weird. Just the occasional Diane Warren respectulation.

DINGDINGDING! Ally Sheedy's finest hour. Not.
-
paging poc, Esther P on VIP. "What A Difference a Day Makes"
-
la-dee-dah-dee-dah! Carly Simon, "Why". Can't remember the last time I heard this.
-
"What You Gave Me", one of those great Marvin & Tammi tracks that was never a single. Heavenly.
and now my mind catches a ride on the Westbound #9!
-
Sometimes my local iTunes seems to just sense my vibe and really plays to it. Today it's beeh hitting on all cylinders since I fired it up about an hour ago:
David Bowie-Star (why doesn't DM EVER play this?)
Model Rockets-Smile
Green Day-Jesus of Suburbia medley
Marah-Barstool Boys
Beatles-For No One
Aztec Camera-Pillar to Post
Pernice Brothers-Red Desert
The Who-I Can't Explain
The Third Bardo-I'm Five Years Ahead of My Time (from the Nuggets box)
The Clash-Julie's Been Working for the Drug Squad
The Clash-Spanish Bombs
Kasabian-Processed Beats
Love it when I get a random two-fer of one band or another, particularly off two separate albums.
And the hits just keep on coming--just kicked into Golden Smog's V--the best song on the record and a superbly crafted power pop tune.
-
so of course the "now playing" feature isn't working, so I've no idea who just did a fine cover of the Stones' "Under My Thumb" on VIP.
