When you get out of bed, please tell me if Kalverstraat is anything like what I remember it being from my stay in Amsterdam 27 years ago (it was where all the sex clubs were, and while my host family didn't take 16-year-old Mark there at night, walking down it in the late morning was enough to freak out my uber-uptight host-mother, which delighted the 16-year-old Mark no end).
When you get a chance to do a day trip out of town, find Naarden on a map & ask someone how to get there. You won't regret it.

Travel update please!!

Travel update please!!
well, there hasn't been much travelling going on. i haven't been to kalverstraat. if it's anywhere in or near the red light, i probably won't be there until guests arrive. i avoid most of the trendy areas of town. i go to school on spuistraat, and work for a comedy club in the leidseplein, so i have my fill of busy tourist areas.
hmm...what's the schedule? i work on mondays, wednesdays, and thursdays, promoting for boom chicago (http://www.boomchicago.nl/) - an improv comedy show. they pay me, give me free beer, and feed me! i have dutch classes on monday and thursday evenings. the rest of my time is spent playing guitar in vondelpark, studying, exercising, and walking about town. i've yet to buy a fiets (bicycle) - that will dramatically improve my life here.
i stop at the local shops in the morning for breakfast after i go running. i buy yoghurt, cheese, salami, bread, fruit, veggies - whatever i think i might eat during the day. there's a laundryhouse around the corner from my house. they wash my clothes in three hours flat! the video store has a wonderful "foreign" section, as you might imagine.
i can watch belgian, french, british, and dutch television on cable. i live with a british woman and a swedish woman. my new friend from class is german. she speaks french, too. and so on...
it's a beautiful day, and i'm stuck indoors for some strange reason. i should go out soon, though, because the weather forecast calls for rain this evening. there's lots of free music about town, though, so i shouldn't be bored.
i live on the albert cuyp straat market. it's a daily market with food, cloths, knick-knacks. it's about four blocks long. always busy. and there's some horrible upright bassist who plays and sings "the joker" everytime i walk by. i swear it's just for me.

Some people call him the Spaetzle Cowboy.

Maybe "pompatus" means something in Dutch?

You guys are too quick. Looking past Steve Miller, I now have Rhinestone Cowboy in my head with Spaetzle Cowboy lyrics forming. Must go drink more Amstel.

I have never seen anyone successfully hold a cat like that in my life.

Nice pics--I gather you've been having warm weather?
The older woman next to the woman holding the cat looks like Paul Kantner in drag. And the woman holding the cat---rrrRROOOWWRR! Particularly the shot of her steering the boat, and showing off her muscles.

paul kantner - that's it! i was going crazy yesterday trying to figure it out. i kept coming up with a mix between lily tomlin and penny marshall.

Then we went home to watch some horrible Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks film. There are so many of them, you know?
I lost another couple of hours of my life last Saturday to "Joe vs the Volcano,", one of said awful Hanks/Ryan films. By comparison, "You've Got Mail" is Casablanca.

Got a travels of Cairo update?
not much to report - lots of studying, guitar-playing, and a little bit of work. the weather is bad today - rainy and windy. i've some friends from the states coming to visit next weekend. we're planning trips to brussels and london.
-
Hi all--thought I'd post here cuz of the travelling connection. I'm in a libary in Brecon, Wales while our clothes are washing down the block--the one thing that sucks about travelling is having to stop for laundry. Having a great time, despite the weather--it's rained at least a bit every day we've been here except last Thursday. (yes, the drought has ended, although there are still lots of PSAs on the radio asking folks not to use their hosepipes). Off to London next week, hoping for a few more nice days before we come home. I'll raise an (imperial) pint in your direction next pub we hit (which should be around lunchtime).
Cheers!
Jim

Cool you're checking in. I travel vicariously through these posts.
The weather here has been sunny but cool and very windy.
Travel on!

Mike requested tales of London over in today's 10@10 thread, but I thought I'd put it here for consistency's sake.
Just time for one right now tho. Last Thursday I took one of those London walking tours, this one of various Beatles sites throughout Soho--places like the former Apple headquarters on Savile Row, the London Palladium, McCartney's current London offices, the street toilet that was used in a Peter Cook/Dudley Moore TV sketch that featured John Lennon, stuff like that. The tour ends with a short tube ride out to St. John's Wood to see the exterior of Abbey Road. Only thing was, when we arrived there, there was a camera crew, a few photographers, and five beings that looked like a cross between GWAR and some refugees from a computer gamer's wildest dream. It was the band Lordi, fresh from their victory in the Eurovision Song Contest. They did some interviews in front of the studio, then took the obligatory walk across the zebra crossing with a photog on a stepladder blocking traffic. I got several shots of them from the reverse angle--will post them someplace and share the link with y'all. It was quite a hoot seeing these comic-book-characters come to life strolling the sidewalks of an otherwise relatively quiet London neighborhood.

i moved to madrid this morning. i have an interview to work at a hostel in half an hour, and i may start work tomorrow. the weather is gorgeous and hot!!!! i love it. much better than the melancholy overcast humidity of amsterdam. i was saddened to have my last dutch conversation for awhile this morning. but now i'm onto another language. with a "lisp." :)
pride is this weekend, and i'm meant to spend the following weekend in the country with friends. i'll try to work out a residence permit this week. wish me luck! if all else fails, i suppose i'll become an illegal immigrant and never leave the country for fear of being denied re-entry.

Glad to hear you are keeping up your vagabond ways. Tell me, who's the red-faced Diana who appears rather distraught in her phone conversation? (I'm assuming your parade of Dianas is continuing.)

I was afraid to ask; she looks like she's underdone an involuntary face peel. (Paging Dr. Zizmor.)
Meantime, this comes from the wife of a fellow Schwab alumnus (Mark - it's Doug Dowson's wife Donna, who did landscaping for this project): http://www.streetofdreams.com/show_details.php?id=18 ... the houses (in Auburn, CA, which I gather is close to Sacto) look a little stodgy for my tastes, but they're undeniably impressive in their way.

Enjoy and keep us posted on la vida en Madrid.
I spent a week in Madrid and another week out and about wrapping up in Costa del Sol. Many, many years ago. One day I want to see the Azores and Portugal.

particularly considering the billing as "La mejor revelacion del Folk negro en USA", not sure how to translate 'revelacion' in this context, revelation is surely not quite right, but the rest of the sentence says that you are the best in the USA. You sure you didn't put these up by yourself?
