it's prediction time and I'm feelin' the 60's. It's been exactly eight weeks since our last trip to the decade, which was a Mystery Year set from '69.
So I'm officially guessing '68, but hoping more for '67 or earlier.
-
yay '68! freakout, baby!

Yes!!! "Itchykoo Park" kicks us into hyperdrive!

glad to be on holiday (unpaid I hear for Cesar Chavez) to hear a '68

well then please predict '73 on Monday

I know it's unseemly to complain during a '60s set, but "Baby Come Back" is pretty much a Katrina at this point.
-
no no no no! VHM the Human Beinz, having a Human Be-In!
-
BOS2 Ree-Ree! one of her many within-a-year-of-the-orig covers, making it her own.

Well, I haven't gotten into 2005, but I have wrapped up everything prior that is available on Darryl, and the Equals only showed up once among 9 sets in that sample.

I Say a Little Prayer for You

down at UCSB, I was training to be a DJ, and there was this older oddball student who seemed right out of some movie, all nerdy and big WLNGish voice. He always raved about the Beach Boys version of Cottonfields, back when the BB's were kinda passé
-
BOS3 BBs, "Friends". dim dim da lee, dim dim da lie...

indeed, tho' few Americans know it, it was a #5 hit in the UK in 1970

BOS4 Jackie's "Chain Gang".

BOS for fuzztone fun

Dave's in a mood today. I was gonna say that we shouldn't expect the Fabs because he played some at 9:48. But here ya go, & it's "Revolution" hard on the RFK, the Hanoi radio & Nixon clips.

Mike, can I have some of what you're smokin'? I didn't go all the way back yet, but in the previous 5 sets dating to last May they didn't appear either. I don't think zero appearances for 8 months & 1 appearance in the previous 4 years constitutes a Katrina. Bring your stash to POC's party...

the looooong version (I imagine there's a single version) I hope.
Rolling Stone likened CCR's rhythm section to an old man coughing.
I dug it.

When I say "Katrina" I'm going back a long time and I know that song has been a Morey '68 staple over many years... so to ME, it' a Katrina.

Yesterday's '74 set & today's from '68 have some much good stuff between the songs, it almost doesn't matter which songs Dave plays. Almost.
BOS #whatever to CCR, but what a great clip from the '68 Olympics about Tommy Smith & Carlos Rodgers.

I don't want to pick a fight, but I think more properly you might say that it was a Katrina once long ago. There are at least a half dozen songs that we have heard 3 or more times since the last time we heard this, such as "Scottish Tea", "House That Jack Built", "America", "Do It Again", "Grazin' in the Grass" & "Martha My Dear".

I'm with you on this one. A nice instrumental performance that works despite the goofy "I think people are the greatest fun" lyric.

ROTFLMAO! As Homer S. would say, "it's funny because it's true..."
BOS # whatever "Alone Again Or". is that Herb Alpert on trumpet?

No, not a lot going on. Just kind of a nice extended simple groove. I was in high school back then!

I'm of the "once a K, always a K" school. Shall we continue to belabor this?

I just heard that Beatles got BOS by 1 vote ...
And I just called in a very late vote for Beatles (talked to Dave) !!!!!!!
Your Vote Does Count !!!!

It's just that I thought we had all agreed that there was such a thing as Katrina redemption, if Dave let a song lie fallow long enough. But as my dad always said: de gustibus non disputandum est.
Anyway I'm just hoping someone brings their stash to POC's send off!

That's easy for him to say. Now my dad, on the other hand, always said, "Opinions are like assholes. Everybody's got one, but nobody wants to look at the other guy's."
Maybe he didn't always say that.

to recap (again): starting tomorrow, many UK stations that stream have to block the stream to anyone outside the UK, to avoid paying music licensing fees in other countries.
As it happens, CG has already put the new software in place: when you click on their player, you get a screen asking for your postal code. So just go to this website first:
http://www.applegate.co.uk/indexes/postcode/business-wc.htm
and find a London postal code to lie about, and you're in!

sorry, bub, Sunday's a "school night".

Bonus track will be Doors - "Spanish Caravan". I know because I picked it!

ROTFL! actually the Latin translates as 'of matters of taste there can be no dispute'. i.e. - you like what you like, I'll like what I like.

Aretha Franklin - I Say a Little Prayer for You
Jackie Wilson - Chain Gang
Aretha covering a song by another great singer, and then Jackie Wilson, with the Count Basie Orchestra, doing a Sam Cooke song. A mountain of riches, a plethora of ascended masters if you will!
PS, does anyone have Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come?"
[TANC: 20 seconds after this post, the Neville's version of this song pops up in my iTunes rotation!]
-
[PS, does anyone have Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come?"
I have it on a Sam Cooke GH CD.

Well, if I know I can come to POC party, I'll try and get you to bring that and the Byrds disc so I can make an MP3.

Not trying to fan any flames here, but in my mind it seems like we've heard it a lot too. However, I freely admit that that could be because I've heard it when playing recordings of some sets. That said, I checked my archive and of the 15 1968 sets I have recorded (which is far from comprehensive--I'm sure I missed others), I found "Baby Come Back" in three of them dating back to 2002: 2/22/2002, 7/22/2002, and 3/12/2004, and in all three it was the TOTHC. Those first two occurrences are close enough together to put a song close to Katrina status--if there were one other appearance a a few months before or after those, I'd say it would have qualified.
As I was scanning setlists, I also noticed Grazin' In the Grass came up quite often, as did most of the others Mark cited (didn't notice America or House that Jack built as much).
On the other hand, I am also of the belief that a song can be un-Katrinafied, over time. The original Katrina is probably qualifies in that category, as I don't think I've heard it more than once or twice in the last two to three years.
Btw, I liked today's set in general--some great segues (the one that preceded Say a Little Prayer in particular) and for the record, I dug hearing the long version of Susie Q too.
My BOS would have been either the Small Faces tune (a nice switch from Tin Soldier, which has appeared more than you'd guess) or Alone Again Or.
-
A Katrina is a Katrina because it's been heard too much. It only follows that as time goes by, the Katrinaness must wear off. It's the second law of thermodynamics: everything concentrated gets diluted!

Hey Geoff, assuming you're coming Sun nite -- what Byrds song were you looking for again?

Didn't get to jump in before, but I thought we'd heard it a lot in the past year as well. Maybe it showed up in a Soul Patrol and/or a Vertical Tasting?
