To reiterate, in case you missed my comment on the thread for today's set, Dave sez its NOT his butt (or his tattoo), nor anyone else on the morning show, so Renee is out. He said it's a friend who prefers to be anonymous.

But one who doesn't have a problem showing his crack on the internet.

Methinks it's a "her crack", not "his".  Unless a LOT of electrolysis was involved.

Thought so. No doubt that those two are brothers--they're almost identical. Care to guess which one is Dave? Quite the classic 50s image--the train set in the foreground is too perfect.

Just like looking into my family photo album, but my hair isn't blond!  I was reputedly thin around that age too!  Weird.  It's like watching these historical videos at school of the history of American Education, and they get to the 50's, and all the little kids doing the "Duck and Cover" drills.  Too weird!

An account of his Xmas activities--posted a few days ago. Turns out he stayed home for the holidays--so whyinnahell didn't we get a 2005 Xmas card?

Dave's postulating about what he'll be playing for 10@10 in 2015 from 2005. I think we can do better--I nominate the New Pornographers.

You bring up a good point: that he's only thinking in terms of what KFOG is playing now, rather than what is representative of the year.  A 2005 10@10 set that has no R&B or hip-hop is an utterly pointless exercise as far as I'm concerned.  "We want pre-nup!"
Title: Valentine's Day
Post by: mshray on February 08, 2006, 02:54:53 PM
today Dave wants to know:
Are we feeling it this year? Do we want a "I's in Looooove and that's a capital L" set?

Do we want to do a "Love Stinks!" set?
A "Love - Start To Finish" progressive set?
A "Love - Atlantic Records Style" set?
A set of Foghead "Personals"?
A "Love...on the dance floor" set?
A "I LOVE Duran Duran!" set?

So far no replies, but I'm gonna jump on the Atlantic Records idea.

FWIW, courtesy of Darryl I have the '03 & '05 setlists.  I'm pretty sure in '04 we had a Love Songs From Hell set, because Valentine's woulda been on Saturday.  So the last Love Stinks set mustabeen in '02.

02/14/03 - Friday!!  Today on 10 at 10 it's...SEX (for Valentine's
   Day)!!
    1. Beatles - Why Don't We Do it in the Road
    2. Tubes - Don't Touch Me There
    3. Commodores - Brick House
    4. George Michael - I Want Your Sex
    5. Digital Underground - Sex Packets
    6. Barry White - Never Never Gonna Give You Up
    7. J. Geils Band - Give it to Me
    8. Marvin Gaye - Sexual Healing
    9. Frank Zappa & the Mother's of Invention - Dinah-Moe-Hum (Best of
       Set!!)
   10. The Chakachas - Jungle Fever

   Phew

   2/14/05 - Monday....and it's Valentine's Day!!
    1. Etta James - At Last
    2. Al Green - Look What You've Done For Me
    3. Marc Cohn - True Companion
    4. Beach Boys - God Only Knows
    5. Peter Gabriel - In Your Eyes
    6. Split Enz - Message To My Girl
    7. Beatles - Here, There & Everywhere
    8. Elton John - Your Song
    9. Van Morrison - Have I Told You Lately
      10. Aretha - Oh Me, Oh My (I'm A Food For You, Baby)

a big ditto on the Atlantic records set. Fingers crossed that Fogheads (or at least Fogheads who reply to Dave's blog) won't be lame and go for the sap.

and re: 2004, you are correct, I believe, about Love Songs from Hell on Fri the 13th.  And iirc, Monday the 16th was President's Day and we got a bunch of 10@10s all day -- including the Sappy Love Songs set, which I recall hearing that afternoon in the car.

Dave has a blog entry about Burt Bacharach's visit to the morning show -- check out the LP cover for "On The Flip Side" (Original Cast Album). Bacharach/David wrote a musical that starred Rick Nelson and Joanie Sommers??? Must not have run very long.  Would love to hear that.

I saw that too!

FWIW, that's the the kind of pastor my dad is.

And even those of you who are as we say, unchurched, don't be shy about asking self-professed Christians, especially the ones who wear those WWJD bracelets, the same question Pastor Gough (like the street) alluded to:  Who in all of the New testament did Jesus see fit to condemn?  Church leaders (and not a single other person).  Who did he expressly forgive? (and not only spend all his own time with, but also commanded his disciples to spend all of their time with)? the absolute dregs of his contemporary society.

Every time I see one of those WWJD bracelets I want to grab that person and say:  "He'd be over there kicking Pat Robertson's & Jerry Falwell's ASSES, that's what Jesus Would Do!!

My god--those things are the size of golf balls. Leave your car out in that kind of hail and you'll have a seriously dented hood, trunk, roof, and maybe some broken glass.

So maybe this means back to newly created sets tomorrow?

Just did my weekly check of the DM blog, and he's preparing for a trip to Michigan and Canada. Didn't say when he was leaving, but I assume it's soon. So prepare yourselves for a week or so of 'classic' (aside: is there another word in the English language that has been rendered so impotent?) sets, coming up shortly.

Asked Dave this am when his vacay starts--he said he's gone on Friday and all of next week. So there you go. Hope Annalisa gets the morning show nod, and not Renee.

Dave's current blog entry is worth the read. A short bit on A-Z (yes, we know why Blackbird is at the end), a bit on a nifty gadget he picked up as a gift for one of his pals at the station, and then a lengthy several grafs on an upcoming biography on a film he caught on cable, "small town gay bar" about institutions such as that in small towns in Mississippi. It's out on DVD in August, but surprised it hasn't played the Roxie or the Red Vic or some such place here. (Is the Castro playing films such as this any more?)

Well, so far Dave's blog entry about "Thru the wall" songs has attracted only 6 comments and the pickings are slim (unless Dave really wants to play "Winchester Cathedral" and "Chances Are").  Dunno if he's gotten emails about it -- I haven't heard him mention it again on the air.

I have nothing for Dave there, best I can mention is rooting through my mom's 45s when I was about 3 or 4 and instantly digging "Shimmy Shimmy Ko-Ko Bop."

I cannot believe that General Mills never took that song and turned it into "gimme gimme Cocoa Puffs".

I read this earlier, hoping instead to find him talking about an upcoming Strictly Instrumental set.  Now that I heard the promo for a '74 set tomorrow I'm feeling kind of down on humanity too.

Oh well.  I've got more important things to worry about.  I'm sure both Dave & I will get over it.

If you look at the entry he wrote the day before, he mentions that he'd "just gone manic" so perhaps Dave was on the down side of a bipolar rollercoaster (rollee-coaster? sorry, couldn't resist) when he wrote the post in question. He wouldn't be the only one.

So this is kinda weird. Dave's most recent blog post, in which he recommends a few films, has disappeared entirely.

And I also found that the link to the KFOG Blog page in the left nav is no longer there, either. You can get to it if you just go to the Community page, but there's no direct link in the popout window from the Community tab.

Wonder if KFOG has had enough of the blogging thing? (Dave has by far been the most frequent blogger.)

Generally, blog posts have not elicited a large amount of replies, even when asked for specifically. (Compare KFOG's blogs to, say, sfgate's). So it may be a "why bother anymore?" attitude.

I've noticed that too. He's been the most frequent contributor to the KFOG blog for a long while, so for him to stop entirely is notable for that reason alone. And there was one entry that disappeared from his blog entirely that was posted a couple of days after the current most recent one. It wasn't anything controversial that I recall, movie recommendations and such.

But as I think I mentioned earlier, if you read between the lines, there seems to be a real bipolar swing to Dave's blogs of the month or so leading up to his last entry. I hope he's doing OK--sounds like he could be going through a rough patch.

Well, Dave has lifted the veil of silence. He's been quitting smoking for the last three weeks, so maybe he's been, umm, distracted. Sounds like he is having a tough time of it--reading between the lines, he still seems to have the urge. But he's a longtime smoker, so it's understandable I guess. Hard for me to know what he's going thru, since I have never smoked more than a puff or two (tobacco) my entire life. But I understand that it's hard.

Dave's friend Larry is a damned fool.  Other reasons to quit smoking: (1) so you can capably walk 5 miles again, have the energy to maybe walk to work once in a while; (2) to reduce the odds that your family will have to watch you wither into a cancer-ridden husk; (3) to save, in a modest estimate of three packs a week, over $100 a month.

I smoked from roughly summer '93 to Sept. '96.  I was fortunate enough to have never gotten physically hooked on the nicotine, so when I quit upon moving to SF (that is, upon realizing I'd double my chances of finding a roommate if I were a non-smoker), I didn't have much difficulty.  So I can't empathize with the difficulty in quitting.  I can, however, reiterate the value in trying.

I agree with you in principle, Gaz, but will point out that I CAN still walk 5 miles, or more, and do on a pretty regular basis (walking a golf course, which I do at least once a week, turns into about a 5 mile hike, and my course is very hilly).  A couple years ago some friends and I were camping up in the Sierra's and hiked 4 miles up to a lake at about 9 thousand feet.  After I beat them all up the hill, one of them mentioned that he was amazed I did so well going up the hill, considering I smoked.  The anti-smoking lobby has done a great job in portraying smokers as weak and dying, which, though partially true, is blown out of proportion.  It's not quite "Reefer Madness", but it is scare tactics.

Sorry to hear he wasn't able to kick the nicotine, but from what I hear those drugs they keep coming up with for suppressing the cravings for tobacco are no fun either--all kinds of weird side effects. Can't entirely blame Dave for quitting quitting--he took the devil he knows over the one he doesn't.

My doctor suggested Chantix too, but I did some research and decided against.  I'll go with nicotine substitutes (again) the next time I make the attempt, which will be soon.  Too bad they can't just put me in an induced coma for 8 months or so, get me past the intitial cravings.

Dave''s latest entry is about tomorrow's Pride Set, and also about his being gay. Re the former, he promises to mix it up a bit. Does that mean no "I Kissed A Girl" or "Glad to be Gay"? Guess we'll find out tomorrow.

Re the latter, once again Dave's sharing more about his personal life than about any other DJ I can think of (except maybe Vin Scelsa). One more reason he is an anomaly in today's media (and I mean that in an entirely positive way).

Just went to look at KFOG blogs -- only Dave's has an entry (about a friend selling an old car) and there's no history of old posts.

Was just catching up on my web surfing after a week AFK (away from the keyboard), and made the same discovery. The KFOG blog link now points to the Airstaff page, and only Dave has any kind of journal entry. Very weird. But I guess blogging is s-o-o-o-o 2007....

Just read DM's latest entry, and he mentions that KFOG is having problems with its blog interface, that they can't upload any of their entries, but they're working on it. So it sounds like they're making special effort to get Dave's blog posted via the airstaff page, but no one else is getting that treatment.

Adding a link here to Dave's last pre-move blog:

Have to keep reminding myself, he's really leaving. His last show is next Friday. It's coming far too fast.

Not really a blog entry, but was looking at the KFOG airstaff pages, just to see what's up there these days, and noted that there are three pretty good pics of Dave (and Gavin Newsom) on his page, shot by Jim Marshall, who I believe guested on Dave's penultimate day on the air.

nice pics; wish they were linked to larger versions.  And I wish for a speedy return of "new" Dave.

I had just clicked on that after grabbing today's setlist.  I never new Gavin was that tall.  I'm 6'1", and I don't tower over Dave like that in the couple of pics of me with him.
