So AL takes requests midweek for a 60s set two out of the past three weeks -- is this going to be a regular thing? :)

I'm always happy that '60s haven't gone away.
ETA: it was looking like I'd have to miss today's set, but my meeting has been cancelled. Yay!

Cool! I'll be listening/posting today as well. Here's hoping today's set isn't a FF/LN-fest.

Well, AL's post all but promises the Turtles "You Showed Me" (a personal fave and far from LN), Byrds, Stones, and Temptations. So I'm guessing "Easy Rider" or "Jeezus is Just Alright"; "Can't Get Next to You" or "Runaway Child"; and please, some deep Stones LP cut.

snoozy TOTHK: Nazz, "Hello It's Me".

BOS1 Turtles, the predicted "You Showed Me." Orig done by the Byrds, iirc, so I'm guessing they're next.

Allman Brothers Band "Dreams"

This set has a relatively slow pace to it, no?
-
BOS2 rare early ABB: "Dreams I'll Never See". proxy of geoff.
-
I'm digging the leisurely guitar sounds of these first three songs. Leisurely, not snoozy :)

Jinx!

Men going to the moon ---> Steve Miller Band "Space Cowboy"
-
Closest to an LN so far: Steve Miller, "Space Cowboy", segued out of moon mission clip.
-
I predict that when this set changes pace it will go in a soul/r&b direction.
-
"One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" ---> Creedence Clearwater Revival "Fortunate Son"

-
Easy Rider ---> Arlo Guthrie "Coming Into Los Angeles"

uber-LN2: CCR
ah, but here's the predicted Easy Rider --> Arlo, "Comin Into Los Angeleees". BOS3.

BOS2 rare early ABB: "Dreams I'll Never See". proxy of geoff.
:)
wish I could listen; giving finals

BOS4 Byrds, "I Wasn't Born to Follow"

"One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" ---> Creedence Clearwater Revival "Fortunate Son"
Fortunately, this song no longer has any relevance today ::)
I was thinking that one thing I like about a lot of the late '60's/early '70's golden age songs was that the guitars sound like a guy jamming at home on a small amp. Guitar-based songs since have tended towards arena-ready big guitar sounds on the studio versions, which I also like a lot of the time, but there's something very pleasant about the smaller guitar sound.
Anyway, the first band I thought of as an example of that warm late '60's guitar sound was Creedence, and here they are.

Lawd! uber-BOS5 BoxTops, "Soul Deep"!

The Box Tops "Soul Deep"

I'll BOS this one. :)

Hmm, seems like another misguided forecast from here. Unless this Box Tops counts. It's got the word "Soul" in it!
-
Goldie Hawn Cactus Flower --> "I'm Free", LN3.
-
Cactus Flower ---> The Who "I'm Free"
ETA: Are the Temptations next?
-
Charles Manson and family ---> The Beatles "Golden Slumbers / Carry That Weight / The End"
-
Manson family --> "Golden Slumbers" medley.
This is song 10, so unless we "go to eleven" we're not getting Stones or Tempts.
-
BONUS: Peggy Lee "Is That All There Is?" I would have BOS this! ;)

Peggy Lee takes us out for the backsell... Hee.

Per AL on FB, The Beatles got BOS.

a great record, and I vividly remember hearing it on one of the NYC Top 40 stations in late '69 and thinking how odd it sounded in the middle of CCR, the Beatles, and "Sugar Sugar". I'll have to work that into the novel somehow.

I was surprised to see that Dave never played this. It's been spun a few times on 10@10 PM.

Somehow it seems normal to me, but I grew up listening to that mix and more... that's how it
was in the sixties for brief time, even on the Top 40 stations. You would hear "traditional" singers
like Peggy Lee or Neil Diamond, pop, rock, motown, soul, a little psychedelia, the occasional
novelty record, other cross-genre hybrids (think Classical Gas), etc. It was an incredibly
rich period of musical experimentation and cross-pollination, and it reached into nearly every
corner of American culture.
I found today's set to be pretty good -- one of the best '60s sets in many months. That's partly
due to an inclination towards more rock despite a leisurely pop beginning. This set also hit a
couple of my personal favorites and had some 10@10 rarities. However once again there were
no bust outs, a situation that seems to become a perverse game as time goes on.

From December 5th's 1968 thread:
and the social comment continues! Bless you, AL. BOS3 Beatles, the LP version of "Revolution". Shoo-bee-doo, all right.
My thought when I read this, and again listening today, was that more songs than not from the
late '60s contained some kind of social comment. It was a time when just about everybody
Had Something To Say.
