Ten great songs by Buffy Sainte-Marie

Ten great songs by Buffy Sainte-Marie
Actually, we could do this in a meaningful way:
Don Fardon, "Indian Reservation" (the Raiders' cover was far better, but this version is more bitter)
The Monkees, "Mommy and Daddy" (Micky's subversive lyric: "Ask your mommy and daddy what happened to the Indian / How come they're all living in places with too much snow or too much sun" -- it scans musically better than it reads on page)
something by Redbone?

don't forget "Geronimo's Cadillac". Actually, I was hoping for "10 10@10s for 10/10" but I guess they decided to forgo that little stunt this year.

Are any of you familiar with J.D. Blackfoot's "The Song of Crazy Horse"? It's a whole album side. J.D. is a Native American & it's a very rueful epic.
You took his land & you ate his corn.
On his grave your land was born.
You took his pride and you fed him dirt.
You wished him winter without a shirt.
And you called this Red Man
SAVAGE.

no relation to J. Blackfoot, the R&B singer, I assume?
there were a number of songs about the plight of the Indian back in the '70s but I'm totally blanking on titles.

I gotta 10:15 appointment, so I'm gonna listen to the first 15 min in the car. See ya.
-
ugh... 1987. Unless Dave finally plays Aretha & George, I have no hope for this to be good.
-
VHM to the horns on this Fab T-Birds song, even if structurally the song is a total rip of "Tuff Enuff."
-

Would you settle for Jim and Tammy Faye as a closet case + an oversize diva?
-
VHM Peter & Kate, "Don't Give Up". The Willie & Sinead cover is nice too -- KFOG played it for about a minute back in '92 or '93.

Aretha & George never ripped off little old ladies, as far as I know... but I bet they could build a helluva theme park. Look mommy, it's the "Turn a Different Corner" Roller Coaster!
-
Dave's fave Katrina segue: Jim, Tammy & "Faith"/
-
"C'est La Katrina". Oh, Dave... consult Joel Whitburn, stat!
I'm thisclose to bailing.
-
BOS to New Order, "True Faith." One of the best songs -- and videos -- of the decade. This band was made for autumn.
-
BOS New Order. "when I was a very small boy/Michael Jackson played with me..."

Now that we've grown up together, he just plays with Macauley. Cracks me up that the day I switch out that quote, Dave summons its source.

It's a Monday--the chances of a by-the-book set rises exponentially. At least the Crowded House song wasn't DDIO.

Hey urth, if you didn't hear Little Steven's show last nite, check it out on his website -- it was a salute to "Nuggets" on the 33rd anniv of its release.
VHM Mr Winwood, "Semen Overspill". From the album Back in the Jai-alai.
-
VHM to Stevie, "Freedom Overspill." Never would have been a hit had it not followed up a #1 smash, but still a very strong track, diminished only by the fake-horn synths that were all the rage from 1987 through 1991.
-
VHM2 REM, despite its ubiquity. Anyone know the significance (to Stipe or anyone else) of the initials "L.B."?
birthday party cheesecake jellybean boom!

OOooooh--sounds very cool! I'll jump over there later today!

"Just Say No" to Robbie Nevil & Crowded House, Dave...

Apparently Dave isn't having the best day either--his YIM status message sez "AAAAACK monday."
Personally, we're having a network outage. Figures.

Ya mean "Lester Bangs"? I know he was a music writer, but haven't ever read his stuff, and I don't know what his influence was. Enlighten me?

He's probably worn out from having to do that Eagles circus pop quiz today.

Bangs is generally regarded as one of the greatest rock critics ever. But, "Leonid Brezhnev, Lenny Bruce & Lester Bangs..." ??? Stipe is a bit too cryptic for his own good sometimes.

Ahh yes, quite a few LBs. I get yer question now. Of course, I know nothing. Seven Chinese Brothers is playing on RadioParadise right now, speaking of REM.

You forgot "Leonard Bernstein".
Bangs was played by Philip Seymour Hoffman in Almost Famous, he was the founding editor of Creem magazine & the mentor of Cameron Crowe. Among other things he coined the term Heavy Metal (from the Steppenwolf lyric). For bonus frink points, who was the very first Heavy Metal band? (according to Lester)

Just finished listening thru the show, and you are not wrong, sir. A fabulous tribute to the Nuggets phenomenon, even if he didn't play my personal fave Nugget, A Double Shot of My Baby's Love. And I gotta say, I dug some of the newer, non-Nugget tracks as much as the genuine articles. The songs by the Greenhornes and the Gore Gore Girls were both cool, and I would not have picked the Iggy Pop tune out as being Iggy had I not looked at the playlist. Even the music beds are cool.
One thing I dig about listening to his show via the web is that you're not locked into listening to the ads--just hit the fast-forward button on the player, and you jump to the start of the next program, no muss, fuss or missed programming.
-

I'm not sure I liked Lester very much, but I'd vote for Blue Cheer as first heavy metal band, but who knows? Led Zep, Beatles (Helter Skelter), Hendrix?

I had never heard that Dylan song about Lenny Bruce; wasn't paying much attention to Mr Zimmerman in the early '80s. And that "Dancing With Joey Ramone" song by Amy Rigby -- what a wonderful record, exactly the sort of thing KFOG should be playing (but isn't).

Christgau raved about that song a week or two ago, fwiw. I haven't heard it myself yet, but I've heard previous of Rigby's work and was impressed (though I can't recall titles).
P.S. HAHAHA YANKEES GO HOME BOO HOO HAHAHA

I've heard her song about being involved with a guy who's still close friends with his ex, "The Trouble With Jenny" or something like that. She's sort of a twangier Dar Williams, at least from those 2 songs.

The "Dancing w/Joey Ramone" song is pretty cool. Kinda corny- but in a cool way.
