OK then, it's a beautiful day!
-
This is what I was hoping for yesterday!
HM, Mouth & MacNeil, Beautiful Sunday. Slight cheeze factor.
Again, I defer to Alicat--her thread was first by a nose.
-
BOS Immigration Man

did he play Mouth & McNeil? or Daniel Boone's "Beautiful Sunday"? Damn phone call, I missed the TOTHC!

BOS Immigration Man
I'm tempted to agree, but holding out for deeper nuggets as we get into the set. Still, a great Nash tune.
Not sure if Mona Lisas is what I'm waiting for, but again, great tune. A DDTrina.

BOS1: EJ, ML&MH. proxy vote for Cameron Crowe.

D'oh! It was Daniel Boone. Thanks for getting my back on that 'un.

I'd LOVE to hear Mouth & MacNeil. That'd be Best Cheeze of Set for sure.

JJ Cale -- proxy WOS for Gaz, who's MIA this AM.

HM JJ Cale
Sometimes covers are better than original but I like both in this case.
There other morning, Dave played original Jet Airliner written by Paul Pena. Someone emailed Dave to recognize Paul's passing. I really liked it. Never heard before.

BOS1: EJ, ML&MH. proxy vote for Cameron Crowe.
If I'd'a heard Daniel Boone this would be BOS#2, but since I missed it this is only #1.
BOS#2 - Edith Bunker, "Ohhhh, I don't think Mr. Nixon would like that either way."
BOS #3, just to be contrary, J. J. Cale.
For a whopping ten frink points, what does the J.J. stand for? Misleading clue: he's an Oklahoma native.
-
Dude, it's prog rock! Long Distance VHM-around.
-
I keep getting the feeling I've heard this set before, but it's probably one (or parts of different ones) I've got archived.
Hey, Ronnie back when he was governor.
-

Lisa Marie?

BOS City of New Orleans.
-
OK, this is what I've been holding out for:
BOS, Arlo "City of New Orleans"
Loved it then, love it now.

Hey, Ronnie back when he was governor.
one of the best clips Dave's got in the files. "Do we really have to hate each other?"
BOS2: Arlo. A lovely peak, both commercially and artistically.

Riding on the City of New Orleans,
Illinois Central Monday morning rail
Fifteen cars and fifteen restless riders,
Three conductors and twenty-five sacks of mail.
All along the southbound odyssey
The train pulls out at Kankakee
Rolls along past houses, farms and fields.
Passin' trains that have no names,
Freight yards full of old black men
And the graveyards of the rusted automobiles.
CHORUS:
Good morning America how are you?
Don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans,
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.
Dealin' card games with the old men in the club car.
Penny a point ain't no one keepin' score.
Pass the paper bag that holds the bottle
Feel the wheels rumblin' 'neath the floor.
And the sons of pullman porters
And the sons of engineers
Ride their father's magic carpets made of steel.
Mothers with their babes asleep,
Are rockin' to the gentle beat
And the rhythm of the rails is all they feel.
CHORUS
Nighttime on The City of New Orleans,
Changing cars in Memphis, Tennessee.
Half way home, we'll be there by morning
Through the Mississippi darkness
Rolling down to the sea.
And all the towns and people seem
To fade into a bad dream
And the steel rails still ain't heard the news.
The conductor sings his song again,
The passengers will please refrain
This train's got the disappearing railroad blues.
Good night, America, how are you?
Don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans,
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.

Riding on the City of New Orleans,
Illinois Central Monday morning rail...
not to harsh the mellow, but remember when this became the theme song of a late-night tryout show on ABC, hosted by a young Geraldo Rivera?
-
proxy of cairo, "dirty work". and a VHM from me.

I toss in my VHM here. Always nice to hear this.

Thankfully, no.
It was called Good Night America, natch. Very Donahue-like, as I recall. Didn't catch on as a regular series, but that Geraldo guy did pretty well, I hear.

BOS3, Oughta Be With Me! Rev Al, so smooth....
-
BOS, Al.
Arlo, too.
Lovely set.

Agreed. Took a darned phone call during Al. aaarrgh. Lovely in the background tho.

I suspected that Arlo would take the popular BOS voting, and in the SH6 slot, that's not an uncommon thing.
We should start keeping track of how often the SH6 wins BOS. Wonder if Dave consciously plays the song he thinks is likely to win in that slot? Seems to happen more often than not.
-
Bonus: the Foghead chooses Dan Hicks "I Scare Myself" over "Sugaree" (Jerry) and "Couldn't I Just Tell You (Todd).

Do y'all know who wrote that song (w/o looking it up)?
Triva answer: J.J. Cale's full name is Jean Jacques Cale. Go figure.
ETA: Missed out on the rest of the set with an important phone call & then a meeting. Upshot of the call is that I'm going to St. Louis next week, hopefully will scalp tix to Game 1 of the NLCS (iff'n the Padres cooperate a little).

Yep--the late Steve Goodman, I believe.

You got it. He also wrote "Banana Republics" which is one of my favorite Jimmy Buffett songs & one that totally sounds like a Parrothead tune.

I think "BR" is credited as co-written by Goodman & Buffett, tho' my memory's a bit hazy -- I recall they each did a version of it on LPs released around the same time. I prefer Goodman's.

proxy of cairo, "dirty work". and a VHM from me.
In my past life, one of my employees, who's now a bassist in Nashville, called this song our theme song, and would always sing along loudly, and in my direction when it came on radio.

JJ Cale -- proxy WOS for Gaz, who's MIA this AM.
Yeah, I've been spending more days at the Voice lately -- finally making a little bit of money, feeling like Tracy Chapman's fast-car protagonist. Dunno if I know the JJC song that played, but my BOS woulda gone to Elton, one of my all-time faves, and a major sledgehammer from the period when I lost my job in SoCal and moved back to SF in late summer 2000. (Its use in Almost Famous, which I saw about three weeks later, only compounded its power.)
I'm guessing Jean Jacques has some Creole roots?
P.S. I have Steve Goodman's original recording of CONO on the Buddah Box Set. It's not as grand as Arlo's cover, a rare instance of a cover incontrovertibly topping the original.

It was "They Call Me the Breeze", which you've also WOS'd by Skynyrd.
