Title: 20 February 2009--it's 1968!!
Post by: urth on February 19, 2009, 12:39:33 PM
Not gonna bust the exact year, but it's from the 60s--heard a promo a few minutes ago. With '74 and a Soul Patrol already played, this week is looking like a pretty fine one.

It's either 10-27-2006, or it's not in the Db.

ETA: Bitchin' set!  Not there's ever been a shoody 1968 set from Dave, but this one has some really great stuff.

Comedienne Paula Poundstone ruined any Bobby Kennedy assassination clips for me a long time ago.

She noted that Sirhan Sirhan was up for parole, and that he was quoted in the news saying, "If were Robert Kennedy still alive, he would approve of my getting paroled."

Quoth Paula: "You gotta feel sorry for this guy!  The one person who would have wanted him paroled, and it has to be the same guy he shot."

"Two riders were approaching, and the wind began to howl."

This was used in the graphic novel Watchmen to great effect (each chapter ended with a quote, and this qoute led into the final chapter).  Wonder if/how they will work this into the film.  From all appearances it hews very closelyto the source material.

And it comes out on my birthday!

i'm really digging the extracurriculars w this set.  I suppose with some of these short songs -- I was surprised at how short the Donovan song was -- Dave needs to fill the gaps.

There's no question that Jimi made this his song, but I'd say there are numerous instances of the covers of Dylan songs being better than the original.  The Byrds practically made a career of excellent Dylan covers, wouldn't ya say?

And the first half of Manfred Mann's career, before he switched to Springsteen covers.

Jimi's version is also one of the rare cases where the cover preceeded the original's release.

So is anyone listening on terrestrial radio? Can you tell me what the bonus track was? The stream got hosed again--lots o' commercials, then back into that fabulous 1968 relic Train in Vain.   ???

BONUS TRACK:  Turtles - You Showed Me

Dang me.  That's a helluva bonus track to have missed.  We may never hear that on KFOG again.

Dave's only played 3 Turtles tunes, once each, in '66, '67 & '68.  And I'm beginning to wonder if we'll ever go back further than '68 in the future (assuming of course that Dave actually resurfaces!)

2/20/09 - FRIDAY!!!  Sounds like...1968!!!

A fab set -- 10-way-tie, despite the Equals and S&G being near-Katrinas (at least to my ears) and a special shout-out to the wonderful, underrated Troggs, just because Gaz dissed them recently.

Revenge is so unbecoming, dear.   ;)
