Judge starts off with the first OMG! on the afternoon: Garland Jeffreys, "I May Not Be Your Kind". THAT'S impressive, since Jeffreys' stuff is barely known beyond the East coast.
-
ooh! LLCoolJ, "I'm the Type of Guy".
Followed by a "double play" by Enchantment. Don't recognize the first; hope song 2 is "Gloria".
ETA: and "Gloria" it is!
-
Judge probably thinks Edwin Starr's "Contact" is a forgotten disco nugget we haven't heard in ages; little does he know CG plays it constantly!
-
James Browm and Afrikka Bambatta, "U.N.I.T.Y.". Haven't heard that since the '80s.
-
OMGWTFROTFL! Partridge Family, "I Can Feel Your Heartbeat"!!!
-
VIP instantly makes my day with Barbara Acklin, "Love Makes a Woman".

Tuned in to CG instead and got a personal favorite, "Young Hearts Run Free." I'll join you at VIP in 15 minutes.

You're the heart and soul of NYC! and you're not even a "Native New Yorker"!
-
Lissen to the story, now! Tina's pumpin' 'tane, Ike's snortin' 'caine.
-
Hope Gaz is still with VIP; here's that orig version of "It May Be Winter Outside..."
-
Skipworth & Turner's wonderfully Wonderesque "Thinkin' About Your Love".
-
it's the original (?) reggae-inflected version of "Black & White" by Greyhound.
-
VIP plays Gaz's fave, Spiral Starecase, "More Today...", which doesn't strike me as soulful (Northern or otherwise), but is a delight to hear nonetheless.
Followed by "Ain't No Woman Like the One-Eyed Gott".
-
OMG! Rick Astley, "It Would Take a Strong Strong Man". What a great record -- by far his best single.
-
VIP is playing the same odd, slightly "off" remake of Chris Rea's "Fool if You Think it's Over" that Dave played last year. The orig must be waaaay out-of-print.

I don't remember hearing (or hearing about) this. What's "off" about it? How do I know which version I have? (My copy's from a volume of "Hard to Find Hits.")

I meant "off" in the sense that it's obvious if you know the original that this is a remake (done for a later label, apparently). Dave played it last year (during an April Fool set, maybe?).

CG's Dean plays Freddie Mercury's "Barcelona". Opera Queens everywhere rejoice!
and only CG could go from "Barcelona" to Herb Alpert's "Spanish Flea" without blinking.
-
interesting: CG used to have a no-rap policy (Dean said as much on the air), but some guy who sounded like he was about 75 just requested "Gangsta's Paradise" by Coolio, and sure enuf, Dean played it.
-
Obscure CG reggae nugget o' the day: "Let Your Yeah be Yeah (and Your No be No)", the Pioneers covering Jimmy Cliff -- you may recall that Brownsville Station did a rock version of it too.
-
interesting: CG used to have a no-rap policy
But they play "West End Girls" and "Rapture"! I call bullshit!
-
Le Freak C'est chic
frrakin to CG in my work area!
C'est impossible not to move to this. Freak Out!
-

Still dancing.

The Voice for the next two weeks, then JaneyJaneyJan e for the following three. Time is only on Saturdays for the time being.
PS: Sorry Urth's out of town; I just saw that Ziff Davis (are they still under the CNet umbrella?) are looking for a copy chief for their gaming division, and was hoping to get some contact names to help inch things in my favor. I'm still very much intending to move back to SF by early next year if work and finances permit. Sooner, if an opp arises. I don't love New York. We're just using each other at this point in the relationship.

CGSS Nugget o' the Day: Billy Preston, "Outta-Space"!
-
Greg does his salute to the Heatwave guy. "Mind-Blowing Decisions", one of my fave lesser-known songs of theirs.
-
ahhhhh, Lou Rawls singin to me, my lady love.

Stick around for the Rock Show -- special guest, Donovan!
-
Rev Al closes out CGSS. He's "Full of Fire". Or grits.
-
Come on, boy! Come on girl! Succumb-a to the Beat Surrender!
-
Donovan, "Colours" and "Universal Soldier". Timeless.
