yes, that rare week with '60s AND '70s. The thread is up and running; making requests is almost pointless in a year like '69 but have at it.
-
Funny, my initial reaction when I see we're going to a year like '69 is "Woohoo! Good set comin'!" But so many of the recent 60s and 70s sets have been LN-a-thons that I am quickly brought back to earth once I have a chance to think about it a little.
Here's hoping tomorrow's effort proves me wrong.

I requested "You Got the Silver" by
Keef The Stones. Won't be able to listen since I'm working at the school again. Hope it's a good one! :)

You will be wrong good man. I am optimistic it will a set of fabulousness. I have the Flirtations on in the background right now. Stevie Wonder up next. Comfort music. HappyCat.

AL's promo for today says "this year has it all: Pop, rock, soul, proto-punk..." which leads me to suspect we're gonna hear the Stooges.
and AL sez "it's 1969, OK?" but starts with Chicago. She also says "song 10 will blow you away!" Hrm.

Chicago "Beginnings"
I was never a fan, but grew to appreciate bass player.

I was a fan in the, er, beginning. By '78 or so... notsomuch. This is our typical overexposed TOTHK. But things can only get better.

trombon-a-phone for me.
kinda muddy production on some of Chicago's stuff. Make Me Smile comes to mind as a particularly notable offender.
-
BST "You Made Me So Very Happy"
-
VHM BS&T covering Brenda Holloway.
-
The pop rolls on with Neil Diamond
Sweet Caroline
-
Blood Sweat & Tears (and Spit).
More trombone action!
it has made me so very happy.
-
BOS Goldie.
LN "Sweet Caroline", as great as it is I'd've preferred one od his other hits from that year.
-
BOS Neil and Sweet Caroline, touching me, touching you.....
-
People! We have even more horns!

BOS2 to the Temptin' Temps.
-
BOS2 Tempts "ICGNTY" -- so glad it's not "Psychedelic Shack".
-
BOS Temps. This is shaping up well.
-
BOS Goldie Hawn. Saw her movie Butterflies Are Free (1972) recently, which is very good:

VHM BS&T covering Brenda Holloway.
Not a Lou Rawls original, eh?
-
couldn't ID that short song after Temps
-
Marfa! NTM and a major bustout!!

couldn't ID that short song after Temps

It sure sounded like Martha Reeves; but per Whitburn it didn't seem to be a charted 45. A B-side, perhaps.
-
AL could play Metal Machine Music for 45 minutes, it wouldn't matter, a trip to the 60's or 70's always transports the gang to

BOS3 Martha reeves; BOS4 Mr Campbell, making his 2nd appearance of the morning -- how often does THAT happen?
-
My malapropism-plagued mother always referred to that Dylan song as Lady L.A.

not often enough!
It's decent set when Glen makes an appearance.

If AL had a knife in her tetth as often as JF says, she'd need dentures.

yay! BOS5. This may be a bustout, methinks.
-
BOS3 to "We Can Be Together." An Airplane bustout? A major fave either way. Up against the wall, motherfuckers!

yay! BOS5.
good one.
Guitar riff reminiscent of Volunteers Of America, no?

or "Fred!"

pretty funny, she didn't bleep one 'motherfucker' but did on the MC5, which I guess was an unavoidable choice.

Very much so; written around the same time. Nicky Hopkins on piano, I believe.

holy crap, did that go out unbleeped? Funny, considering my Radiohead comment earlier.
kick out the jamz indeed!! BOS6 MC5
-
So glad I was around for this set. Forgot to add a BOS to Glen Campbell. And hell, one for the MC5 as well.
-
Happy to say Urth was proven wrong -- rather impressively so. I'm sure he won't mind.
-
So glad I was around for this set.
we're glad too -- we miss ya around these parts, my friend.
-
cow-orker interruptus for balance of set. just getting back. aaarrrggghhhh
-
Most of the set was your typical DC-ized version of a 60's set. If DC had his way, it would have been "Volunteers" instead of "We Can Be Together"
-

and once again -- it's weeks like this that make me wonder if things are getting better or if we just got lucky. A good '78 set; a GREAT '69 set; and '89 and '92 sets that each included major Pop bustouts. May it be ever thus.

lord knows he leaves his mark on '80s and '90s sets but I'm sure he couldn't've been pleased by Glen Campbell, or that Vandellas obscurity, or JA (and that unbleeped MF) or MC5. and the rest were Oldies staples but we avoided Steam, Spiral Starecase and some others so I'll give him a pass this time.

We Can Be Together was the B-side of Volunteers (I looked that up just now). I thought it WAS Volunteers and even posted a lyric from the A-Side on Facebook. Oops.

Not in the slightest. Very happy to see AL invoked the spirit of DM and uncorked what seems to be (based on your running commentary) a damn fine set. Wish I'd heard it live; as usual I'll try for the replay tonight.

On the original liner notes, the record company made them print "Up against the wall Fred!" This persists in many internet lyrics sites!
