CG/KPOO/KCDX etcetcetc for the week of 2/9/09

'LNG gives me Frank'n'Nancy, "Somethin' Stupid", which is anything but (even Nicole Kidman & Robbie Williams couldn't screw it up).  I wanna do a Karaoke duet with the princess on this one.

my buddy Brian "the Cannon" Bannon on 'LNG played the Carpenters and wondered if they listened to 'LNG "growing up in Connecticut" -- I emailed to remind him they grew up in Downey, CA. Apparently they moved to Downey from CT in 1963, when Karen was 13; 'LNG signed on in the fall of that year, so he conceded that they weren't listeners -- and promised to play "Tarzan Boy" later (and I didn't even ask!)

Meanwhile, here's the 2nd Macca memory of the morning: "No More Lonely Nights", one of his nicest '80s efforts.

No "Tarzan Boy" yet, but he did play Tony Bennett, "I Left My Heart in SF"!

ETA: 3-1/2 hours later, and he's still making on-air references to my e-mail!

If it would get you to get up on the stage - and if it would get the Princess to visit the States - I would totally fly to SF for this.

Just sayin'.

JJ scores with Joe Tex's spectacular, forgotten "I Believe I'm Gonna Make It", a letter-from-Vietnam song that's truly one for the time capsule.

Bob Shannon pauses in his "Behind the Hits" tribute to Beatles-on-Ed Sullivan long enough to play the orig version of Sandy Posey's "Born a Woman" by Patty Michaels (who?), a much more upbeat '60s girl-singer-sounding version (think "I Will Follow Him" as it might've been done by Jackie DeShannon).

followed -- holy crap! -- by Bobby Rydell's version of "World Without Love", also NTM.

The song nudged into the Top 40 in February 1968 - in a tragic irony, their lead singer was killed that month.  (I know not how; this comes from my Whitburn.)

"oh Carol... I am but a queen fool". This 1972 retro chart I'm listening to on CG includes a re-released Sedaka hit from the early '60s.  And a NTM Johnny Nash hit, "More Questions Than Answers", which is quite nice. And -- OMG -- the Strawbs' glorious "Lay Down".

speaking of reissues, here's Jeff Beck (in his Hippie Hat), getting a 2nd go-'round with "Hi-Ho Silver Lining".

Discovery of the week: Junior Campbell (a founding member of Marmalade) and a UK hit from late '72, "Hallelujah Freedom":

10cc's "Donna", the only record of theirs that's more annoying than "Dreadlock Holiday".

The woman doing the newscast on CG is named Verity Gear -- is that a Bond Girl name, or what?

Archie Bell's fab "Here I Go Again" was a huge UK hit but sadly did little on these shores:

and it's followed by the J-5's "Lookin' Thru the Windows", one of my favorites of their lesser-charting hits.
