Title: 18 Jan 2010: The MLK set
Post by: RGMike on January 14, 2010, 07:49:46 AM
I was just gonna post about whether AL would revive this tradition (Dave let it lapse in 2008 and of course last year he was already gone). But per the KFOG website, it's on for Monday.

I won't dock AL points for predictability.  But I hope she dusts off Stevie Wonder's "Black Man" from SITKOL.

This reggae "WSO" is cool -- last nite on KPOO the jazz show played multiple versions of this song.

Woo!  Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions, "Keep on Pushin'"!  Several of their songs would have worked here - "Choice of Colors," "This Is My Country," etc.

I'll quibble with MLK here: God is completely disinterested in the freedom of the human race.  It's been out of God's hands for a long, long time now.

Dave's angle was a bit more pessimistic - "this is the struggle we are engaged in."  Annalisa's is more optimisitc - "this is the struggle we've overcome."  Not surprising that I throw my lot in with the pessimists.

Worth reminding everyone of who vocally opposed the MLK holiday: Jesse Helms, John McCain, Ronald Reagan, and others.

Little wonder that many of us perceive the GOP as an essentially white-supremacist party.

that's right, Reagan signed it b/c there was a veto-proof majority backing it.

I heard the whole set, but with the kids home for the day I decided to continue playing cards with my son rather than move over to the computer.  I made a point of explaining the significance of the "I've been to the mountain top" speech to them, and we even discussed the assassination a bit.  My boys are good solid liberal humanists so far.

Pride is one of U2's best songs... BOS for this live version.

Did Bono perform the factually correct version? I heard they sometimes correct their error of "Early morning, April 4" to "Early evening, April 4" on some live concerts.

what's odd about Bono's error is that early evening in Memphis is early morning the next day in Ireland. So if he'd said "early morning April 5".... he mighta got by with it
