The Drive, week of 1/3/11
« on: January 03, 2011, 08:05:57 AM »
Mon 1/3/11: 1982

nice day for a white wedding in Africa, Toto.

the usual '80s snoozefest is developing here. CSN's "Southern Cross" a major offender.

VHM Crock o'Siegals, in Iran, Iran so far away.

VHM too the 'oo, "Eminence Front" -- it's a put-on!

Tue 1/4/11: 1978

I'm sticking withh JJ, who's doing an hour of songs from January 1961; chances are Bob will play "Thunder Island" or "Dreadlock Holiday" or both in a '78 set. (ETA: he did neither, tho' disco Dead, Journey and Sexy Rod are not much better)

Bruce Springsteen - Prove it All Night
Genesis - Follow You Follow Me
Grateful Dead - Good Lovin'
Cars - Good Times Roll
Rolling Stones - Shattered
Journey - Lights
Firefall - Strange Way
Queen - Bicycle Race
Rod Stewart - Do Ya Think I'm Sexy
Styx - Blue Collar Man

Wed 1/5/11: 1974

Please, Bob: no "Sweet Home Ala-bummer"

Hrm... Bob starts his '74 set with "Long Live Rock", which began the Sound's '74 set yesterday... and was followed by the above-mentioned Skynyrd abomination.

Holy crap -- and here's "SHA" -- is Bob just copying Larry's set verbatim??  WOS-in-perpetuity.

well, not verbatim: here's "Seasons in the Sun", not that this is any better than "Clap For the Wolfman", which was Larry's song 3.  And now the Iggles' "Already Gone" another song that's become an overplayed "classic" despite not having been that big a hit to begin with.

GFR decide to locomote. Yeesh, this is quite the crapfest so far.

BOS the OMDs, gettin' to heaven by raisin' some hell. VHM Chicago, still "Searchin' ".

and 2 more from Larry's set to close us out: EJ gets bitchy and the Cat Man dates a chick who looks like Frankenstein. oo! la!

The Who - Long Live Rock
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama
Terry Jacks - Seasons in the Sun
Eagles - Already Gone
Grand Funk - The Locomotion
Bad Company - Can't Get Enough
Ozark Mountain Daredevils - If You Wanna Go to Heaven
Chicago - (I've Been) Searchin' So Long
Cat Stevens - Another Saturday Night
Elton John - The Bitch is Back

Thur 1/6/11: 1967!!

woo freakin' hoo!

Traffic to start, in "Fantasy" land.

BOS1 American Breed, bendin' 'n' shapin'

VHM Human Beinz.

Rob just played Dylan's "Watchtower" in '68; Bob elects to spin it in '67.

BOS2 the Grass Roots, repurposing the Drifters "sha-la-la-la-la-la"s

BOS3 the fabulous Buckinghams, "Don't You Care?"

It's gettin' near dawn -- let's bypass this tired 'trina.

Young girls they do get wooly: BOS3 Otis.

Traffic - Dear Mr. Fantasy
American Breed - Bend Me Shape Me
Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze
Human Beinz - Nobody But Me
Bob Dylan - All Along The Watchtower
Grass Roots - Let's Live For Today
Buckinghams - Don't You Care
Cream - Sunshine of Your Love
Beatles - A Day in the Life
Otis Redding - Try a Little Tenderness

Fri 1/7/11: 1976

please, Bob: a surprise or 2?

Yikes, Frampton to start. 'trina, I love your way.

Well, Styx's "Mademoiselle" is a relative rarity (it certainly got little or no NYC airplay). And now Boston are smokin' and tokin' -- and I'm not jokin'.

The Doobs arrive with their ode to prune juice.

another rarity: ELO's "Rockaria". VHM

BOS George and the Pythons, "This Song".

"Guess who just got back today?"

VHM Elvin Bishop, foolin' 'n' fallin'

another for the "I never need to hear this song again" file: the Manfreds cover the Boss.

BOS2 the Dan of Steel.  Is there gas in the car?

Peter Frampton - Baby I Love Your Way
Styx - Mademoiselle
Boston - Smokin'
Doobie Brothers - It Keeps You Running
Electric Light Orchestra - Rockaria!
George Harrison - This Song
Thin Lizzy - The Boys are Back in Town
Elvin Bishop - Fooled Around and Fell in Love
Manfred Mann - Blinded By The Light
Steely Dan - Kid Charlemagne

Was NTM.  Funny how they went from "Lady" to "Mademoiselle" to "Babe."  They sure love their nameless and theoretical ladies!

[grouchy rant]Props for playing it in '67.  1967 is 1967, which is when the album came out to great acclaim.  Just because some people didn't hear it until later...[/grouchy rant]
