Title: 31 December 2009: The Decade in Review
Post by: urth on December 31, 2009, 10:03:14 AM
Hmm. Hoping she can work her magic on this one as well as she does otherwise.

Dylan a good TOTHK.

Things Have Changed. No. Fucking. Shit.

Agreed, tho' I still think he's ripping off the melody of "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition...)" more or less.

Damn, AL has worked overtime on the clips. Kudos!

Are we getting one song from each year?

WOS to the election of GWB, I'm already sulking over how sucky this decade turned out.

WOS2 to Jack Johnson, even more boring than usual.

WOS2 to Jack Johnson, even more boring than usual.

Amen to that, although this is at least a song we haven't heard to death in the course of "KFOG variety." Hoping for better from here on.

HM to Dylan.

BOS1 to Jack Johnson, since this was before he became horribly overrated.  This album really was fresh-sounding back in the day.

And we're getting it. BOS2 Wilco, Jesus Etc.
Title: Re: 31 December 2009: The Decade in Review
Post by: Gazoo on December 31, 2009, 10:13:31 AM
Oh, WOW.  BOS of the month if not the year to "Jesus, Etc.," my favorite Wilco song, and one that really captures the post-9/11 vibe (even if it was recorded months before).

AL, thank you.

Holy crap...when she played the 9/11 clip I wondered if she really would play "Jesus, Etc."  This gets a BOS2 from me.

Indeed, Mr Johnson is boredom personified.  This 3rd song is familiar, but I can't identify who it is.

the irony is that some simpleton like me who doesn't listen to much besides KFOG or KPIG doesn't recognize some of the obscure tunes AL's been spinning to please you hard-to-please guys.  Tune#4 for example. What the hell is this?

"Mission Accomplished!"

AL is nailing the decade, that's fo' sho'.

We have to hear "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley at some point, no?

VHM (I can't possibly give another BOS vote) to "Seven Nation Army."  I never warmed to Jack White's voice, but the riff is undeniable.

AL is really getting political, as well she should.

BOS3 White Stripes, Seven Nation Army.

Post by: radical347 on December 31, 2009, 10:20:14 AM
The White Stripes...HUGE alternative hit.  Not quite a VHM, but still good choice.  A band I generally respect even though I don't like anything by them.

LOL @ Janet Jackson.

It would be a good choice, and it should work within the framework she's got going. That was 2006, iirc (it was all over the radio in the UK when we were there that year).  I was kinda hoping for Hey Ya for '03, but it's just a little too bouncy-happy for this set.

BOS2 from me -- ironic since KFOG barely played the White Stripes this decade, even after Fogheads named the album a fave-of-the-year.

BOS3 Green Day!

Appearance of Arcade Fire may be biggest surprise of set.  I was in Montreal at the time of Katrina, and their "Neighborhoods" song was in their version of the Billboard Top 10, alongside Black Eyed Peas, etc.  Was odd to hear on the radio in that context since they're a fringe act here.

Per ipodhistory.com, it was intro'd in October of 2001. It took a while to reach critical mass, but I remember seeing 'em on the street in the spring of 2002.

And kudos to Mike for the crystal ball action. VHM Gnarls B.

it didn't take off until much later though.  I remember going to the very first live and local at the Winchester on Friday the 13th of June, 2003 & when Renee gave one away to the attnedees she had to explain what it was & clearly I was one of only 3 or 4 there who had already heard of it.  The first ones used MusicMatch, it wasn't until Apple rolled out the iTunes store that it really went places.

True, but there are a # of legitimate Triple A songs I can think of this decade that would have been good choices.  Life On a Chain, When You're Falling, Camera One, Destiny, Ghost, Cannonball, The Little Things, & others.

As for her 90s sets being Live 105 ish that's true also but when did AAA officially become a format of its own?  If I recall most Alt. stations in the 90s were very similar to Triple A now.  I mean even Jewel was an alternative staple back then.

I think AAA came into being around the same time, '92 or so--think Lyle Lovett, k.d. lang, Rembrandts, 10,000 Maniacs etc.

Triple-A has been a separate format since the early '90s. That's what made KFOG diff from Live 105 all those years.  If you heard Arcade Fire on KFOG this weekend, I'm guessing it has something to do with Fogheads' best-of-the-decade lists (see previous post about the White Stripes).

Damn, AL did a fine job with this. I always thought there should be a year-end recap on 10 @10, and then the year should be mothballed for a decade. But Dave never went there.

It just occured to me that the voiceover guy at the very end sounds like Jason what's-his-name from the Daily Show (Samantha Bee's hubby).

A nice way to end the set!  BOS5 to my #29 song of the year.  My full top 50 live countdown will be posted whenever I get finished. (Probably in a week or two...and don't worry, there's no Jack Johnson.  8))

Ooh, I'll look forward to this.  I can send my personal Best of 2009 CD to anyone who wants one.  Here's the playlist (which is not exhaustive or in order):

I'm disappointed the Noisettes didn't make the cut :'(

I liked that song immensely; I just never bought it on iTunes.  Same with Pete Doherty's "Broken Love Song," (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BP72cFjx69U) which actually is my #1 song of the year.
