Guessing it's going to be 80s. I have a phone meeting at 10:30, so won't be around for the whole thing.
ETA: So much for my guesses. 1990 it is. World Party leads, with their Message in the Box.

Total Recall ad

Put the 'trinas in the box...
and AL's gotta stop calling it the "bleep-o-scope-time-machine-thingamajig".

BTW, thanks for that list in the "AL thread" -- it wouldn't surprise me if we do '64 at some point.

Is this D-Mode?

Is this D-Mode?
I don't know, this is so far out of my wheelhouse!
-
Is this D-Mode?
yup -- possible BOS -- a bustout or a rarity?

At the very least a rarity--Policy of Truth is by far the DM song of choice for '90, although we did hear one called Enjoy The Silence once in 2002. Not sure if that's what this song is or not.
-
you twisting my melon, man. -- BOS2 this John Congas cover (a nice nod to DM)
-
BOS Depeche Mode. Another bustout & only the 5th DM entry in the Db.

that was "World in My Eyes", methinks
-
you twisting my melon, man.
Holy Toledo! You're twisting my melonman! Definitely never heard the Happy Mondays on 10at10 before.
-
you twisting my melon, man.
translation?

I much prefer early DM, but this sounds pretty good and it's def of the time.
-
whatever this is sounds like a T Rex mashup or somethin'
-

Madchester Mania!
BOS #2, and an artist bustout for Happy Mondays. Yay Annalisa.
-
you twisting my melon, man.
translation?
melon = slang for head, skull, cranium.
This is a cover of "He's Gonna Step on You", an obscurity by John Congas that was a Dave fave in '72 or thereabouts.
-
you twisting my melon, man.
translation?
A line from the current song, "Step On"
-
I'm in the minority here, but IMHO "Wayne's World" (the SNL sketches and subsequent movie) are wildly overrated ripoffs of Bill & Ted.
-
Minority again: I never got the love for Black Crowes.

I can see that, but this Skit w Tom Hanks ("Sibilant -- Sibilant") and Aerosmith was certainly a highlight.
-
Yay for a Depeche Mode song from 1990 that isn't Enjoy the Silence or Policy of Truth! (Not that either of those are bad songs, but...)
Sweet...Happy Mondays. They remind me of the Soup Dragons.
Not a fan of the Black Crowes either, but at least I don't think I've heard this one before.

The Happy Mondays, one of bands to come out of the Manchester scene in the late 80s/early 90s. See also Stone Roses.

I only heard the last few seconds, which was enough to BOS it. Unless I'm mistaken that was "World In My Eyes", the first track on Violator, from whence the two tracks metioned above. Not only had Dave only played tracks from two of Depeche Mode's first 8 albums*, he never even played "Personal Jesus", which you'd think would be right in his wheelhouse.
*AMG gives 5 of them at least 4 stars.

OMG, is she really playing Social D?!?!?!?
-
Woo Effing Hoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Social D RULES!!!
BOS of the week, "Ball & Chain".
-
Now THIS has gotta be a bustout, both artist and song: Social Distortion, Ball & Chain (not to be confused with the one Janis did).
-

think so
BOS... right, Shray?

there can be no confusion on my part!
y'all can probably imagine this old fogey is getting a headache from all this 1990! Social D, ouch!

I have a bunch of this stuff, anyone want a Madchester sampler CD, just ask.

Meeting was just put off until tomorrow, so I'm here for the duration.

and speaking of overrated: Twin Peaks (the show). Theme's rather nice, tho'.
-

BOS... right, Shray?
Right. My post caught the tail end of the previous page, but you can see my enthusiasm.
And yes Urth, another artist & song bustout per the Db. (Although I could have sworn Dave played Happy Mondays previously)
-
what is this thing taken from the Twin Peaks theme?
-
what is this thing taken from the Twin Peaks theme?
Angelo Badalamenti, and it's not taken from, it's the whole thing.
Julee Cruise (no relation to Tom) is the vocalist.

and speaking of overrated: Twin Peaks.
Twin Peaks was one of those shows that was kind of like licorice (if I may borrow an analogy from Jerry Garcia). Not everyone liked it, but a lot of the people that liked it, REALLY liked it a lot. I didn't get it at first, but it really drew me in. And it was unlike anything else on TV at the time. Or since.
VHM Angelo Badalamenti's (sp?) Twin Peaks theme.
-
what is this thing taken from the Twin Peaks theme?
never mind that -- WTF is your phallic avatar?? :o

Thank you, I don't think I've heard the version with vocals, and I was a fan of the TV show.
-
This song is pretty rad. It might have to get a BOS from me!

I believe those are earplugs. ;)
-

I think those are earplugs, and Geoff is tryingto tell us what he thinks of this 90's music.
-
Most unneccessary of set: Paul Simon. This is still in pretty regular rotation on KFOG, no? Don't need to hear it here.

actually, KFOG plays a lot of Graceland regularly, but I can't recall hearing this very much.
-
nice to hear the full version of the Twin Peaks theme, wrapped in plastic to preserve freshness.
Damn good coffee song!
-
BOS PS
-
Hey Geoff, are you okay with Rhymin' Simon?
BOS once more.
another really great set from Annalisa in a formerly cringe-worthy year.

If you were born b/w 1945 and 1965, you were Born In the Right Time for kfog's demo.
-

Possible it was Ginger? I can't imagine Bob playing it in Chicago, although Rob in NY might have.

Agreed here. The first song today that is not only not a VHM/BOS, but a total snoozer to me.

Me neither. Have to check with Darryl, but I sure don't think they give this album anything close to its due.

They played "The Obvious Child" a lot back then

actually, KFOG'd be happy to get rid of folks my and Geoff's age.
BTW, the Sound appears to be doing '84 today, and yesterday they did '71.
-
VHM to Midnight Oil, keeping us honest and clean from all the sullied 80s.
-
Madonna clip but no "Vogue" -- cheat!

Oh My, BOS to P.I.L.!
-
OH MY GOD!!!

When that ad played I and my friends all promised not to vote so that we could get that spanking.
(and we were all grad students!)
-
First Social D...then PiL. Wow. This one gets a BOS too...
...and then into the consistently snoozeworthy Van Morrison. Ah well. 8/10 ain't bad.
-
Van is real real gone; AL's sets are real real long.

I'm not that predictable. Yes, this is a relief from a certain sonic quality, but far from my favorite Van
-
sonic youth?? oops.
now that would be a ATBBustout.

-
I would guess Thursday would be an 80s set and Friday something for the 4th of July?
Either that or we'll get some kind of tribute to Michael Jackson, who I don't think has appeared (or even been mentioned) in a set since his death. Certainly, it would be justified, and I don't think AL is to the point yet that she could throw something like that together on the fly (as Dave did the day after George Harrison's passing), at least not something she would be proud of, so taking a week to put one together is not unreasonable.
-
BONUS TRACK (From Janelle in Calistoga): Sinead O'Connor - Emperor's New Clothes
props to Annalisa for having that among the choices & props to Janelle for picking it. Dave played that once as I recall.
