Title: 1 July 2009: it's...1990
Post by: urth on July 01, 2009, 10:01:51 AM
Guessing it's going to be 80s. I have a phone meeting at 10:30, so won't be around for the whole thing.

ETA: So much for my guesses. 1990 it is. World Party leads, with their Message in the Box.

At the very least a rarity--Policy of Truth is by far the DM song of choice for '90, although we did hear one called Enjoy The Silence once in 2002. Not sure if that's what this song is or not.

This is a cover of "He's Gonna Step on You", an obscurity by John Congas that was a Dave fave in '72 or thereabouts.

I'm in the minority here, but IMHO "Wayne's World" (the SNL sketches and subsequent movie) are wildly overrated ripoffs of Bill & Ted.

I can see that, but this Skit w Tom Hanks ("Sibilant -- Sibilant") and Aerosmith was certainly a highlight.

Yay for a Depeche Mode song from 1990 that isn't Enjoy the Silence or Policy of Truth! (Not that either of those are bad songs, but...)

Sweet...Happy Mondays.  They remind me of the Soup Dragons.

Not a fan of the Black Crowes either, but at least I don't think I've heard this one before.

I only heard the last few seconds, which was enough to BOS it. Unless I'm mistaken that was "World In My Eyes", the first track on Violator, from whence the two tracks metioned above. Not only had Dave only played tracks from two of Depeche Mode's first 8 albums*, he never even played "Personal Jesus", which you'd think would be right in his wheelhouse.

*AMG gives 5 of them at least 4 stars.

Angelo Badalamenti, and it's not taken from, it's the whole thing.

Julee Cruise (no relation to Tom) is the vocalist.

and speaking of overrated: Twin Peaks.

Twin Peaks was one of those shows that was kind of like licorice (if I may borrow an analogy from Jerry Garcia). Not everyone liked it, but a lot of the people that liked it, REALLY liked it a lot. I didn't get it at first, but it really drew me in. And it was unlike anything else on TV at the time. Or since.

VHM Angelo Badalamenti's (sp?) Twin Peaks theme.

I would guess Thursday would be an 80s set and Friday something for the 4th of July?

Either that or we'll get some kind of tribute to Michael Jackson, who I don't think has appeared (or even been mentioned) in a set since his death. Certainly, it would be justified, and I don't think AL is to the point yet that she could throw something like that together on the fly (as Dave did the day after George Harrison's passing), at least not something she would be proud of, so taking a week to put one together is not unreasonable.

BONUS TRACK (From Janelle in Calistoga):  Sinead O'Connor - Emperor's New Clothes

props to Annalisa for having that among the choices & props to Janelle for picking it.  Dave played that once as I recall.
