Hideous requests are already piling in: Mike + the Mechanics, John Fogerty, Dire Straits...help us all.
I've requested Bring on the Dancing Horses...can't remember if she played this recently.

What's up with the array of sets we're being offered this week? So far we've got two visits to the 80s (Chartbusters and 85) and what turned out to be a completely forgettable visit to '97. Is someone being pressured to downplay the 60s and 70s stuff, even though that's clearly what the audience reacts to (vis a vis the number of comments on AL's FB page)?

today is 7/7/11 -- gotta be lucky, no? AL "liked" my request post so I'm optimistic too.
and to answer urth's query: '80s/'90s/'80s is scary but we didn't get any '90s "classics" so that decade was overdue. At least that's what I keep telling myself.
UGH: that obnoxious Sun_Gevity commercial again. That guy sounds like Jesse Ventura.

Here here! (or shall I say, hear hear!) Hoping she'll play at least one of the R&B/dance songs I requested on FB.

and here we start: Road to Nowhere

nice start with the Heads -- and that "earworm OHW" has got to be "Tarzan Boy", I'm guessing.

Radio must come before online. You posted before tune even started online. An infectious earworm to come... hmmmm

Cable TV feed is earlier than radio, so I'm delaying a bit.

Let's get those HOOters outta the way... ;)
I saw them in Sept 82 in Philly (at JFK Stadium), they were opening act on bill with Santana, The Clash and The Who. Some Clash and Who fans clashed a la Mods vs Rockers.

geoff, you always manage to find the world's LARGEST gifs & jpgs.
note the size reduction sir?
-
no one was more pleased than I about the rehabilitation of the underrated Hooters -- but "And We danced" is now an official AL-trina and needs a rest.

Off to a crappy start. Hoping this set is a grower, not a show-er. ;)

Pee-wee: But what? Everyone I know has a big "But...? C'mon, Simone, let's talk about *your* big "But".

BOS "Rain on the Scarecrow." Again I say, when's the last time a protest song such as this made the Top 40?

oh yeah, love this one. BOS Simple Minds Sanctify Yoself.

I think we had this convo and decided that the remake of "Give Peace a Chance" by Sean Lennon & friends came the closest.

VHM Straits. Isn't this the first album to go platinum on CD sales alone?
-
Except for Simple Minds and John Mellencamp (an artist whom I've come to appreciate as time goes on), this set is "So Far Away" from being really good.
HEY-O!
-
This isn't the OHW earworm, but it's most likely the one that will stick throughout the day. Most Earwormy of set, DS.

that's funny, I think ALL versions of this feel too "extended." ;D ;D ;D

VHM Straits.
Mike and I agree?

also one of the early all-digital CD's, very different from vinyl release.

indeed, and an LP that really started the idea of rock for adults, even if it was big on MTV.

The set needs a shot of R&B/dance!!

The Cure played Radio City Music Hall and this image made up their poster. I didn't really know their music back then, but the image was impressive.
"There's Something About You" this song that makes it an earworm for me.

BOS(Level4)2
All I really know about this band is they have a famous bass player.

Is this the tune AL alluded to at opening of set??
it's certainly not a One Hit Wonder.
ah -- HERE it is! BOS3 Baltimora!

And it's not even Thanksgiving! BOS2 "Tarzan Boy."

In the era of Reagan-rock, I don't think I've even heard this. Club favorite? Billboard charted? I don't remember it on KFOG.

a top 20 single and huge MTV fave. And turned into a Listerine commercial in the '90s.

wow, did ya hear that Dred Scott promo? he's looking for recordings of old KFOG deejays to play on the air! That's kinda cool.

It's not surprising that in my old fogey deadhead insularness I missed this, but according to the link, it didn't chart big in the US until '86, does that jive with your memory?

yeah, it charted here in October of '85 and peaked in early '86, tho' it was a UK hit in the summer of '85 and I recall our local "New Wave" station played it as an import.

Well, we've got DM in our archives! I taped some KFOG in the '90s, so have a bit of M Dung, Rosalie, Dusty Rhodes, Bill Evans ("Hi Hello Howareya"), John Grappone, Beth Holland.

Just a Gigolo won BOS, too. No-bod-ee cares for me!

A pretty typical AL new-wave centric mid 80s set that just barely stayed within the limits of playing it safe. Still pretty rockin', though.
BOS's: Simple Minds, Dire Straits, John Mellonhead, Level 42, The Cure, and, of course, Baltimora.
"Silent Running" would have been better than "All I Need is a Miracle."
-
BOS, Talking Heads. Mild BOS. This set wasn't awful.
Not awful, but not terribly good either. My opinion might have been better, but I tuned in during Mike and the Mechanicals and bailed during Level 42, thereby missing most of what might have improved things. Given what I did hear, this set just continued the wave of mediocrity that we've been hearing all week. Really hoping things turn around tomorrow. Has any clue been dropped yet?

Sometime in the 70s...

I'm willing to say AL is just having an "off" week; she did solicit requests for this set, so you can blame the Fogheads for Mike & the Mechanics and the Hooters, even if AL should know better, Katrina-wise. She DID play two certifiably goofy requests with Diamond Dave and Baltimora, so I'm willing to remain open-minded. But Friday better not suck.

Apart from the Hooters (song isn't really bad, but I never need to hear it again), seems as if it were a really good set. I don't know if 5, 8, 9 or 10 have appeared before. Yeah, "Silent Running" would have been better than "All I Need Is A Miracle" (more of an '86 anyway), but I won't quibble.
-
It occurs to me that AL now has over 1200 FB "friends" -- far more than a year ago when we were regularly getting some amazing requests played almost daily. Given that the "early adopters" (like us) were probably more music-geeky than the average Fogheads, many of whom are JUST NOW figuring out that AL has a Facebook page... well, it seems this could be another explanation as to why 10@10 sounds different lately. AL can only ignore lame-ass requests for so long.

Point taken. If you're going to take requests, you have to honor everyone's once in awhile, otherwise people get pissed off and don't come back. We (as a group, and Mike in particular) still have a better batting average than most, so guess we can't bitch.
