"I didn't get a break, I got in a fight": Lita helpfully provides her own radio edit for people like Casey squeamish about the phrase get laid.

Ha!  I think we discussed that last year as well -- I'd never heard the "clean" version before. But I look forward to Lita in any ford, er, form.

OMG -- just before AT40, our Canadian friends played Joni's "Carey" followed by Ms Moyet's fantabulous "Invisible".

Dept of Redundancy Dept: Billy Ocean sees a "picture-perfect painting" in "Color of Love"

BOS1 Ms Estefan's "Anything For You" -- Best. Karen Carpenter. Imitation. EVAH.

BOS2 TTD's "Sign Your Name"

Well, at least DJJJ&tFP's "Parents Don't Understand" is moderately clever, but WOS1 JJ Fad's supremely annoying "Stupid-sonic" (as I used to call it back in the day). Fingernails-on-a-blackboard to the Nth degree.

Turn the radio UP!  BOS3 Eric Carmen's wonderful, forgotten "Make Me Lose Control".

VHM Percy and his Long Tall Cool One.

I think I said this last year, but: I'd forgotten the Church's "Under the Milky Way" ever got near the Top 40 much less into it.  Proxy of shray.

VHM Jane Wiedlin's "Rush Hour" -- a lot more fun than most of her more-successful ex-bandmate Belinda Carlisle's solo stuff, IMHO.

WOS2 Richard Marx, holding on to the night; another VHM H&O's "Everything Your Heart Desires"

I surely have not heard this Brenda K Starr tune since '88.

BOS4 lovely Lita, censored or not.

Holy crap -- BOS5 to the most unexpected "Extra" in ages: Kylie's "I Should Be So Lucky". One of the great pop singles of the '80s and I'm gobsmacked to be hearing it here, since it (sadly) peaked at #28.

As previously discussed, this weeks '70s show is indeed the very first AT40 from July 4th 1970:

http://www.oldradioshows.com/at40/070470.html

(note the error on that 1970 list -- "Sugar Sugar" should be by Wilson Pickett, not the Archies.)

and the '80s version is a special -- a 1987 Top 40 hits of the '80s... So Far:

It's the Amer Top 40 Fun & Games website:
http://www.angelfire.com/music4/at40coc/contents.html

PS- I'm away in San Diego this weekend, so if someone can record the 7/4/70 AT40, that would be cool.

It should be noted that the above link is NOT the chart from July 4, 1970 but July 11, 1970. #40 for July 4th was Sly and the Family Stone "I Want to Take You Higher." The #1 song on July 4th was Jackson 5 "The Love You Save".

Is July 11th maybe the first show? This is the same one Siruis/XM played last year but I followed along with my Billboard chart book and it was July 11th. Even at the beginning of the show, Casey says "For the week ending July 11, 1970" and if you read the cue sheets, the first one list is July 11th.

Check the July 4th chart here: http://books.google.com/books?id=jhQEAAAAMBAJ&dq=billboard&source=gbs_summary_s&cad=0#all_issues_anchor

Argh!  Chico Oldies flubbed the intro, starting the show midway through "End of Our Road."

A good countdown irrespective of its historical value; early VHM to Crabby Appleton's a-bit-ahead-of-its-time "Go Back."

This is the first time I've heard Ray Stevens' "Everything Is Beautiful" in its entirety in many, many years.  Happy to put it back into storage.

HM to Susan Jacks and the Poppy Family, "Which Way You Goin', Billy?"  I've heard it's about a guy who chooses fighting in the war over his wife, but I think it could be read as sexual-identity conflict as well.
