I really need some soul today...
Think I'll email Greg and request "Fake".
-
Woo Hoo! "Tribute" by the Pasadenas -- Greg musta been listening to Smooth FM this week!
What a wonderful record. "Right on right on"
-
i'll join you after the madeleine peyroux program on kcrw.org (http://www.kcrw.org/online/). i want to request tara kemp on soul spectrum today. or is it only oldies?
-
I think 1989-1990 may well be "oldie" by their standards.
In which case, why not request some Expose on my behalf while you're at it?

He does tend to stick to older stuff, which can be as recent as mid-'90s. You're missing "Juicy Fruit"!
I'll be your lollipop
You can lick me everywhere...
-
That was the first time I've ever heard Mtume's "Juicy Fruit." Color me severely disappointed: I was expecting something amazing after all the criticla accolades; instead, it struck me as just more tedious '80s synth-soul (you'll note that I have no appreciation for Frankie Beverley and Maze on similar grounds).

at the time ('83?) it seemed fresh. you've heard too many of its clones since then, probably.
so, is there an A-tume, a B-tume, and so on?
-
Jimmy "Bo" Horn, Dance Across the Floor! sounding amazingly like KC, who wrote & produced.

LOL! Besides, it's "Maze featuring Frankie Beverly", for some reason.

Stargard! "Which Way is Up?" -- damn, haven't heard this since it was a hit. Rose Royce got too big for their britches, so Mr Whitfield went out and put together another group for his next soundtrack.

yay for chairman of the board! finders keepers!

A group now perhaps best known for their turn as Lucy & the Diamonds in Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band ...

I'd completely blocked that from memory. Of course, I've never seen the film. Is it so-bad-it's-good? or just really bad?
-
mmmm... Stevie, "Knocks Me Off My Feet", one of the many should-been singles from ... Key of Life.

I'm gonna say "both." The acting is dreadful for the most part and the plot has more holes than Amadou Diallo. On the other hand, watching the Bee Gees beat the shit out of Aerosmith is the most OMGWTFLOL moment in cinematic history. It's worth watching once, preferably as part of a double feature with either Can't Stop the Music or Xanadu.

I do own the sndtk and I think George Burns doing "When I'm 64" and Steve Martin doing "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" were actually great ideas. Next time it's on TV...

what a powerful speeding psa!
"if you hit me at 40 miles an hour, there's an 80 percent chance i'll die..."

mmmm... Stevie, "Knocks Me Off My Feet", one of the many should-been singles from ... Key of Life.
I also meant to note that the song was turned into a 1999 R&B hit by a nondescript singer named Donell Jones, and its hook was interpolated into the minor charter "Thug Lovin'" by Ja Rule f/ Bobby Brown (!) in 2003.

OK i've eased on over to SmoothFM, to keep the soul flowing.
But that Andy Peebles is obviously no relation to Ann -- he's one seriously pasty-faced English White Guy

it actually charted twice over there -- first in '87, and then they remixed it as "Fake '88" (!) and it was an even bigger hit the 2nd time.
I thought "Fake '88" was G.H.W. Bush's campaign theme...

when they say Why?? Why?? tell 'em that it's human nature...
