My mondegreen of set: "I was educated / at Woodstock."  Really heard it this way all those years ago.  Never wondered what Sam and Dave (or John and Dan) could have learned from John Sebastian.

Me too! Didn't occur to me until much later that "Soul Man" was recorded 2 years before the festival.  

John Sebastian was at Woodstock? Oh yeah.  His first solo LP didn't come out until the following summer -- a great lost album that I think you'd just love, Gaz.

I should try and listen to that and the soon-to-be-reissued Wolfkings of L.A. from John Phillips in the same session.  They'd make a great paired review, I imagine.

PS: I only cited Sebastian above b/c I was thinking of his memorable scene in the movie: He's tripping balls, trying to express to the crowd his joy that a baby's been born in the crowd.  "That baby's gonna be far out, man . . ."

indeed, both came out at the same time.  The only song I know from the Phillips is "Mississippi", a wonderful tune that shoulda been a bigger hit.  Dave played it once on a long-ago 1970 set, wish he'd haul it out one of these days.
