KPOO's blues show featuring a zydeco version of "Papa was a Rolling Stone".
followed by the Impressions doing "Amen"!
-
Judge kicks off his show in a direction I don't think I've heard him take before: Kraftwerk, Trans Europe Express.
Although I think I've figured out that there's no predicting what he's going to program next.

of course, Kraftwerk had a surprisingly large black following back in the day, and have been sampled by many rappers, not to mention imitated by the likes of Soul Sonic Force.

Did not realize that, but I'm not surprised.
Now venturing into more predictable (but no less funky territory): Parliament/Funkadelic, Aqua Boogie.
-
more funkadelic: "Rump-of-Steel-skin" LOL!
-
Judge spins a CGSS fave, Oliver Cheatham, "Get Down Saturday Nite"
Is he the Cheatham from Cheatham Dewey & Howe?
followed by more parlaifunkadelicky: Bootsy! "the better to funk you, my dear!"
-
Day-um! Gap Band, "Oops Upside Your Head"!
Jack & Jill went up the hill
To have a little fun
Stupid Jill forgot her pill
And now they have a son

Not if you blow the joke!  (It's "Dewey, Cheatham & Howe.")

-
I couldn't post, but was listening on the radio, and in the car, wondering what you guys would say about the 1984 set on KFOG: Dwight Twilley, Eurythmics (not the normal) Pretenders, Huey, Billy Idol (BOS went to Flesh for Fantasy)Tracy Ullman, etc. So, I get to office, try to turn on KRSH stream, and 'error!' Then I log in to find y'all couldn't get KFOG, so here I am listening to Deep Tracks!
Seger "Famous Final Scene," Alice Cooper "Under My Wheels", Chicago "I'm a Man"

Wow, Dave hasn't played Tracey in awhile. TANC: I caught the "Flesh For Fantasy" video the other nite on VH-1 Classic.

S&G "Fakin' It"
What a blend of folk, rock, and harmony.
-
Dunno if the princess is still plugged in, but VIP is playing Michael McD's cover of "Distant Lover".
-
on Deep Tracks. Did this get renamed on Animals? Live at the Cow Palace, the guitar solo was the most glorious 4-channel grand Gilmour!
ETA: Yeah, it's called "Dogs"
When they first played it live, it had a different name, and slightly different lyrics (Sheep was called "Raving and Drooling") and they gave out a comic book with lyrics too!

followed by Teddy wakin' up everybody.
-
I emailed earlier, and just got a message it was back, and lo and behold, it's up to 128K!

General question: I've been on a big soft-rock kick since my Pgh visit (Air Supply, Andy Gibb, Benny Mardones, Player, later Boz Scaggs, etc) and am wondering if any of you have come across any good Net radio stations playing to this underserved subgenre. Do you know how many years it's been since I heard "Never Gonna Let You Go"?
Thanks in advance for any leads,
Gaz.

-
a CG treat: Hedgehoppers Anonymous, "It's Good News Week", one of Jonathan King's many incarnations, iirc.

the KRSH stream sounds crappy all-of-a-sudden. I'm ditching.

all of a sudden, static was added, and I ditched to Deep Track. Hmm, as long as I'm here, let me check...
Seems OK now

WLNG NUgget o'the Day: Cilla Black, "You're My World". Spectacular.

Helen Reddy's cover a decade late was a knockout in its own right.
Ooh! PULL UP TO THE BUMP-AH, BAY-BEYYY

Oh my yes -- one of her finest hours, IMHO. And produced by, of all people, Kim Fowley. He did the whole LP Ear Candy, iirc.

Nice: RJ's "Give It to Me, Baby," which Superbooty used to really rock out on live. Are they still performing? I saw them about 10 times in SF.

Hoo Lawd! "Mercy Mercy Mercy" -- Cannonball Adderly?
I told you, this is a great hour of music!
-
Ride "The Horse" with Cliff Nobles & Co.! Like "Time Is Tight", one endless vamp, pretty much, but a delightful one.
-

I could definitely get used to this. I wonder what time my lunch will be at my new school job in the fall?

They played Jerry Butler last time, too. Can't find the post I made, but then it went into Brenton Wood, I remember that.

Ow! "Let's Straighten it Out" -- Lattimore. This is truly fabulous. Not your typical Moreyesque just-play-the-hits Soul Patrol.

Is this a BB King song or did he just do his own verison. And isn't it a one-T Latimore?
-
smooth Smokey, "Yesterlove". Heard this on VIP the other day.
yester-kisses that I used to treasure
now you're givin' some other lips pleasure.
What an amazing poet he is.

I do believe BB covered it. And it well may be one "T".
I think this Candy Chamberlin needs to get into your Inessa/Ginger 3-way
-
So there you go for set #1. Not bad ehh?

I called her up and chatted with her last time I listened, she'd mentioned something about Chip Taylor, who wrote "Angel of the Morning", and as you may recall this is my favorite trivia nexus. She knew that he also wrote "Wild Thing", but had forgotten that he is Jon Voight brother, & thus Angelina's uncle & little baby Shiloh's great uncle.
-
I never heard Al Green's version until the Talking Heads covered it.
-
"I gave you things you couldn't even PRONOUNCE!"
I'll never get tired of that. Oran Juice, you da MAN.
And now a DJ saves a life, film at 11.
-
Marfa! "Honey Chile"!
"that ain't the way granny raised me!"
-
Is this TOP?
-

I just joined you guys in time to hear someone who sounds like Lenny Williams (izzat his name? the Tower of Power guy), singing "What happened to the world? You came into my life to stay." Lovely stuff, I'm guessing 1973 from the vibe.
-
Is this TOP?
Gotta be!
-
Lawd have murcy! Love morse-code guitar riffs inspired by "You Keep Me Hangin' On."
-
Is this TOP?
Gotta be!
I checked, it's from '72 on the same LP as "You're Still A Young Man".
-
This is Southside Johnny doing "Broke Down Piece o' man" with... ???
-
Tuff Temps! "I'll Be in Trouble". Truly a remarkable assortment here.
-
Hrmph. The way you re-do the things you did on your last single.
-

If this is a trivia question i'll have to guess you're asking because the answer is Little Steven, but I really have no clue based on listening.
-
Dusty! swoooon...
-
Dusty needs a copy editor. The line is "I just don't know what to do with myself," and she sings "I don't know just what to do with myself," which means something slightly different. :?

I take that halfway back: She corrects herself in mid-song.

Picky, picky, picky. She's an artist, dammit!
Oh my, "Soulful Strut", without Barbara Acklin.

see previous "picky picky" comment. You've just described half the Motown catalog.

You mean I was right? I was just guessing based on the known association between the two. Little Steven actually knew Southside Johnny before he knew Bruce, n'c'est pas?

oo! that cover of "Alone Again Or" -- Calexico?
-
OK, back to CGSS in time for Gonzalez, "Haven't Stopped Dancin' Yet".
and at 2pm PDT, I'm checking out VIP's Beach Music show.
-
"Get on the Boat", Prince from the new one. Very JB, including an appearnce by Maceo!
-
Well, VIP's stream ain't workin', so i went over to WLNG in time for Patti Drew's orig 1968 version of "Working on a Groovy Thing". Sounds like somebody said to Marilyn McCoo, "hey this Patti Drew chick sounds like you -- you should cover this song!"
followed by Jay & the Americans' cover of the Ronettes' "Walking in the Rain" -- haven't heard this since '69.
-

It was in regular rotation for years on 3WS in Pittsburgh, and I haven't heard it since leaving the Keystone State in '96. (They loved that and "This Magic Moment," but for some reason never got around to playing "Come a Little Bit Closer" or "Cara Mia." Hrm.)

wow, she's on there too? I heard him name-check Maceo (guess you gotta, if you're channeling JB to begin with). Methinks I need to buy that album!
-
I've been Deep Tracking while working much of this afternoon/evening. Biggest and best surprises: Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks doing "Needles & Pins" live ('85, I think); and right now, Donovan's "Epistle to Dippy."
Looking through crystal speck-tickles . . .

it took me awhile to get into it. but not as long as, say, morph the cat.

someone just sent me a link to pandora (http://www.pandora.com/), my new favorite radio station!!!!
i entered steely dan, and they played a good mix of steely dan, small faces, leon russell, and queen. then i entered gino vanelli, and the first song they played was "love and emotion." i'll see how they keep the smooth after this song.

well, the gino vanelli channel has proven to be the best of cheesy smooth. i'm currently listening to eric carmen's version of "on broadway." i'll type in grover washington, jr. next to see what they play.

eric carmen's version of "on broadway."
I've never heard that.
And with a little help from the Lawd, I never will.
-
Little Steven OMGWTF Nugget o'the Week: Jackie DeShannon's original version of "When You Walk in the Room", which if I've ever heard it before it was a VERY long time ago. Delightful.
And now he's doing a salute to the great 1967 movie Privilege, (starring Manfred Mann lead singer Paul Jones and Jean Shrimpton!) which you simply MUST rent if you've never seen it.
