Title: Wednesday May 4 -- it's...1980
Post by: urth on May 04, 2005, 09:58:41 AM
Hey! Wonder if we'll get any repeats from the NY set?

ETA:

And a pretty good TOTHC, too--one of my favorite Rush songs, of which there aren't a lot. I always loved this song for driving on the freeway!

I almost forgot to tune in b/c I was too busy reading Mark's wonderful recap of the Kent State murders over on the Misc thread.

Wish I'd stayed there a few more minutes, as I tuned in just in time for this horrendous Dead song.  At least it's not "Shakedown Street," I guess.  :/

Would rather hear K.C.'s "Please Don't Go" or the theme from "Greatest American Hero" today.

More nefariety from the military, this time about poor Pat Tillman, an admirable man who didn't deserve to die for his country's lies:

you'n'me both, bub.

The Peak's 1980 set earlier will be hard for Dave to top, given his unwillingness to think outside the early-'80s box he's in.

BOS: "Ashes to Ashes."  Davy cleans out his closet.  And the stiff funk suits my horrendous mood today.  Segue from this into the Dandy Warhols' "You Were the Last High" and I'm all set.

Frank Zappa, dismissively: "Song's pretty white."
Davy Jones, annoyed: "Yeah, well, so am I."

"Got a wife and kids in Baltimore, Jack
I went out for a ride and I never went back."

And people treat this song as an anthem.  No wonder Bruce is the most frequently misunderstood writer of our generation.

The River is one of the bestest double-albums everer.

Damn. NY wins the Springsteen Derby, hands down. I'd much rather hear Sherry Darling (or any of half a dozen other songs from The River) than getting Hungry Heart for the umpteenth time.  Flo & Eddie notwithstanding.

VHM Dire Straits. and Bruce. But "Sherry Darling" on the Peak earlier was exactly what I mean by the difference between the 2 sets.

Except for "Funkytown", this set is an all-too-accurate snapshot of where AOR was at in 1980.  And that's why New Wave/"alternative" happened, chillun.

BOS (but a weak one) to Rockpile, which is Gaz's WOS  I suppose. The one example of Dave topping The Peak (they played "Teacher Teacher" this morning).

This "When I Write the Book" is a breakout for me.  I kinda like it for the backing vox.

But I'm suddenly struck with the fear that Dave's gonna close this set with "One Trick Pony."

A fair guess, to be sure, but this works for me, as it's clearly not Dave Edmunds on the lead vocals.

Well, I gotta say: Dave's pulled some less-played stuff for the latter part of this here 1980 set. At least less-played to these ears.

I Swear To God I'll Change!

It's a good thing Warren got a lot of love before he passed, because he truly shoulda gotten a lot more love during the first 20 years of his career than he did.

A near-WOS to a drunken Zevon for phoning it in.  Like Hunter S. Thompson, he gets a pass on his uninspired stuff b/c he cuts such an indelible figure and the awful stuff seems part of his "persona."

Exactly what are your criteria for dishing pop/rock performers for being drunk?

And what's the point exactly?

I dock them points if their substance use leads them to release singles consisting of one verse repeated three times, with a single hook riding the entire way.  Just seemed like he put no effort into that one, and that's where I pull out the claws.
