cue Huey.
-
Whoa! Did they even play the intro? It feels like someone forgot to flip a switch.
-
Godley & Creme with a TOTHS (Top of the Hour Simmerer; not exactly a Cooker).
-
You make Beej wanna CRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!
-
there's that allman brothers lick again.
-
I should probably hate "All She Wants To Do Is Dance" more than I do. Or don't, rather.
-
Happy 420 Day!
-
WOS to Henley, making Another Big Political Statement That Really Isn't All That Big When You Think About It.
-
early bos: scritti politti doing miles' favorite song.

as I recall, you're not all that fond of the Godley & Creme either. Scritti Politti actually sounds good in this context.

It was so not big I didn't even think about the political ramifications. But, then again- all I want to do is dance.
It is a terrible song- but I don't hate it as much as I hate other Henley songs.

Well, the G&C is kind of insubstantial: deprived of the amazingly-cool-for-its-time video, it strikes me as kind of an irrelevant and ignorable listen.
But yeah, the Scritti Politti is fun, and no longer a Katrina.

BOS so far: Tom Petty
-
Another great video that makes the song seem lesser on the radio: Petty, "Don't come Around Here No More."
-
Beej: Love the day's avatar. Consider this a virtual puff-puff-pass.

Beej: Love the day's avatar. Consider this a virtual puff-puff-pass.
i'll do a realtime puff-puff-give to your avatars.

Thanks! Hey, it's 420 Day after all!

Another great video that makes the song seem lesser on the radio: Petty, "Don't come Around Here No More."
I thought that video empitomized what was wrong with MTV at the time: over-elaborate, over-art-directed, show-offy, and having little to do with the actual song.
-
I wish I could puff-puff in real-time. But, the smoke wafting over the cubicle wall would give me away.
-
Proxy Mshray BOS to "To Live and Shave in L.A."
-
HM to the only Wang Chung song I really like.
-
there's that allman brothers lick again.
ABB in 1985?

no. godley and creme use the lick from "blue skies" at the end of "cry."

bos: wham!

OMIGOD! Geoff's avatar is moving! Cooool.
-
this is when it became apparent they should let george do the writing and producing, i think.
-
BOS Georgiepoo. And that's sayin' somethin about this set.
-
BOS to "Careless Whisper," and points docked from Dave for suggesting that this might be a Hit From Hell (six-six-six-six-six). This is a well-written song with a memorable refrain, a catchy sax riff, and one of the most powerful vocal performances of the decade (just wait til George hits his stride on the final verse).

no it's not

Yeah, HM to "Careless Whisper".

You wouldn't want that.
My roomy is going through hell right now because of the reefer madness. Madness I tell you! He slipped and fell at a client site, tried not to file a WC claim, but one thing led to another and he was tested. Likely to lose his job still, though now he's going to Marijuana Anonamous meetings...
Madness!

I was gonna do this too, but you beat me to it.

Agreed. If only Debbie (oops, Deborah) Gibson hadn't re-written it as "Foolish Beat".
-
no it's not...
AAAHHHHHHH! Y'know, they're right: today's "super-weeds" are hella potent!
Speaking of drugs: I picked up a CD of the collected works of lost Chicago psychedelic band H.P. Lovecraft whis weekend. Those dudes were on some serious chemicals.
-
Madness!
it's reefer! it's madness! it's reefer! ...
live aid!! woohoo! i can hear freddie now "deyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy-o!!"
-
Play your geetar on the MTV
-

That is some scary shit, sir. I'm knocking on my woodene head for luck that they don't institute a drug-test policy here at my job.
Of course, when your job is as dead-end as this- I think they kinda hope you are on drugs- so's you won't notice.

That band's a staple on the Technicolor Web of Sound radio station I've been listening to in recent weeks. I don't "get" them.
-
Speaking of "Reefer Madness"- did anyone catch the musical on Showtime this weekend? Pretty funny.

Schwab used to pointedly *not* test its employees, as they knew they'd lose at least 35% of their workforce in a boom time.

Yeah, as one friend said, "All this because you fell down? Once?"

bos#2: pecker. i mean percy.

Don't have Showtime, only willing to pay for one premium channel, and barely that. But "Deadwood" keeps me at HBO, for now.

Me also. Is this a bust-out?
-

I like a lot of their ongs & sound. But, yeah- at times it's almost like a parody of the genre...
You've lost all sense of touch
In the dark, without a crutch!
You've arrived (you've arrived)
At the Mountains of MAAADNEEESSSSS!
(which is the title of an HP Lovecraft novella, by the way)

that Percy, he's tremendous!

Tak(atrina)e on Me.

Most Over-Used Ring Tone of Set: A-ha, "Take On Me."

Yeah, I should probably pare down what I get. But, it is kinda cool getting, like, everything.
At times Reefer Madness seemed like it tried to hard to be irreverant. But, when Jesus gets a big production number and he's potrayed as a blow-dried shirtless 70s Vegas sleazebag, you forive such sins.
And I want to spank Kristen Bell until my wrist breaks.

Methinks it is. BOS for me too.
(Dave's Yahoo login has the notation "Wham-when Wham was good" after it in the YIM buddy list window today.)
-
i don't think it's fair to have henley and frey in one set. that's like crockett and tubbs.
-

This one...

It's a collection of, like, 20 songs.
-
WOS, Worst Of Month: Glenn Frey, "The Heat Is On." One of the most pointless things ever recorded.
-
crockett and tubbs.
who will be played by Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx in Miami Vice: the Movie. Seriously.
-
Exucse my rookie mistake, I posted this as a standalone thread - sorry dudes and dudettes.
1985 production values really detracted from the music. Everyone had to use a gated snare, digital reverb, DX-7 and synth bass - where is the groove?

Yeah. I'm afraid I can't "half-full" this one.

They certainly got lost in some spacey shit, but at their core, they were angelic choirboys harmonically. The tempo was often fast, the plastic organ sounds dated and cheezy, but there's some really good stuff I'd be happy to recommend deeper exploration of, if you think you'll ever listen again. Bill Graham always used to wax about how sad it was the group broke up too soon.
-
No worries, chudfembot (now that's a pop culture melange). Welcome to the Mountains of Madness!

It' snot a problem. And welcome.
As far as this '85 set leaving me cold, well, no more than any other. 85 aint my favorite year. The Robert Plant track was a cool surprise, though...

no problem, the janitors here will just clean up the thread. I also enjoy your musical comments, so please consider joining the group!

PS, yeah, 1985 was pretty cold for me too!

I'd definitely want to check out what you've got at the next get-together. Like I said- this is a collection of their Phillips recordings. It seems pretty complete. And I've been diggin it for the most part. I like a faster tempo myself & when the organs aren't being cheesy- there's some pretty cool sounds!
And you'r right- they have awesome vocal harmonies. Even their cheese epic "Mountains of Madness" boasts some sweet vocal.

sounds like you have a repackaged version of the same CD I brought to Chez Shray's when you and I rode up together. When I was a kid, "The White Ship" was a staple of KMPX-FM, the first underground station. I actually ended up discovering a black folk/blues player from Chicago named Terry Callier, who wrote "Spin, Spin, Spin" and "It's About Time." I also liked their Fred Neil songs, "Get Together" and "High Flyin' Bird."

Here's a scan of the back of the CD (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v516/beej/HPLove02a.jpg). I scanned the CD the other day because I've been meaning to post something about it & learn what you guys might know. I knew someone here would know something!

You have a couple more bonus tracks than I: the single versions of White Ship and Keeper of the Keys. Have to get them from you someday! Nice touch with the Fillmore Poster. My wife's first concert was Donovan at Winterland, and HP Lovecraft opened for them too. (http://10at10.jammingzone.com/images/DonovanFillmorePoster.jpg)

Groovey poster. Yeah, the CD booklet has some neat stuff, too.

Who was that masked Chudfembot? I didn't get to thank her.
(One assumes she's a her anyway.)
Greetings and welcome to our little niche on the web! How'd you find us, may I ask?

I looked up 10@10 on Google since my old URL for an old 10@10 forum was kaput. It's nice to be here.
