I think someone else just joined....

I've been a huge fan of 10@10 since I moved to the Bay Area in '91. I tell people everywhere that it's the best hour of radio anywhere in America, which is not too bad given it's only 45 minutes long at best!

I'm glad to find a place where other fans are hanging out.

Wilkommen!  Glad to find another fan.  Please don't be put off by the number of in-jokes; most of us have known each other for years.

So how's about we regulars (re-)introduce ourselves as well?  (Set it to the B-52s' "Song for a New Generation" if you must.)  My name's Joe, aka Gazoo, aka Gaz, aka Joe Mama, aka He Who Must Be Mi-Highty Real; and I'm the sole East Coaster here, having moved to NYC 5 years ago after spending the late '90s as an adopted San Franciscan.  I'm a copy editor and occasional writer and music critic.  And I squared the circle.

Welcome! Glad you found us. I'm a native San Franciscan now located on the Peninsula. Was part of the Yahoo group and now feel quite attached to this little group. Very smart and friendly people. I am much less knowledgable about music trivia and take notes from the experts here. Music is however where I derive much enjoyment. Dave and the 10@10 sets are just the BEST. This group also "meets" for other regional 10@10's which begin at 7am PST and there are threads for those too. This is a great little group to chat music, current events, life events, sports, and so much more. I'm a baseball (Giants) and hockey (Sharks) fan. Enjoy football to a lesser extent, call myself a Niners fan but have pretty much lost faith.

I think Joe's suggestion is a good one, particularly since it can be a little daunting for a new person to come into a group that's been well established for awhile, as this one has.*

I'm Jim, aka Urth, which is short for Urthwerm, which evolved from a cartoon/comic book called Earthworm Jim. I live here in SF, and have been listening to 10@10 regularly since moving hear almost 10 years ago. Like Joe, I am also a copy editor for a large Internet company, and am kind of a musical obsessive. Not an uncommon trait among our numbers.

*If you were wondering about the history of our little kaffeeklatsch, it was spawned out of the 10@10 Club Yahoo group that was sponsored by Yahoo and often mentioned on air by Dave (until the sponsorship money ran out). I believe most of us were at least occasional contributors to that group, which was much larger when we were getting PR from Dave.

My name is Mark, Mshray is a contraction of first initial + first syllable of surname that I was using for years before CWebb or ARod or anyone.  I used to work with Gaz 10-11 yrs ago, and he introduced me to the rest of the group shortly after it coallesced.  I left the City for the 'burbs after my kids started arriving & now live in Castro Valley, but I work in Silicon Valley which means a lengthy commute.  So I'm a fairly regular caller to the Morning Show during my drive time, most recently last week I told them a joke which they replayed.  I'm also known around here for maintaining a Db of all the 10@10 sets, which Urth has dubbed the Shraytabase.  Between him & me we have over a 100 sets ripped digitally & I can send copies to folks who ask.

Hey all, this is Dave, aka Wayback, a name I picked top of mind when signing up for this group, seems appropriate. 10at10 has been a real fave since moving here in Jan 1988.  I grew up in New Jersey, but my folks are originally from the Bay Area.  I've lived in Walnut Creek, Albany, Oakland, and since '97 in Pleasanton. I worked at the HQ's of a couple major consumer products companies, in marketing, but changed careers in 1990 to marketing consultant for non-profits.  And now for something completely different...

Hey all, this is Dave, aka Wayback, a name I picked top of mind when signing up for this group, seemed appropriate (the Wayback Machine). 10at10 has been a real fave since moving here 19 years ago. I grew up in New Jersey, but my folks are originally from here. I've lived in Walnut Creek, Albany, Oakland, and since 97 in Pleasanton. I worked for a couple major consumer products companies, but changed careers in 1990 to marketing consultant for non-profits.  Glad I stumbled onto the 10@10 Club.  And now for something completely different...

Okay, busy me, just getting around to this...

Welcome Wayback (and John@10 too)!

I'm Rod, and I'm a tenattenaholic.  *rimshot*

I'm a computer programmer for a small software company in downtown S.F. (claims software), mainly to support my golf habit.  Live in Alameda.  I've not quite the encyclopedic knowledge of music of most around here, but am damn passionate about what I do know.  One of the great things about this club (and 10@10) is that it broadens my appreciation of different genres of music, and ways of thinking in general.  That, and the people are intelligent and tolerant of others views.

I don't get to post as much as I used to, with being busy as f@ck and also having bandwidth issues at work that caused monitoring of internet usage, but I'm almost always listening.

My favorite song is "I'm Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves.  Dave can't play that enough for my tastes.

And I hope Huckabee is our next president.

Two of the above statements may not be true.   8)

Hi everyone!

I moved to SF in Jan of 2008...and KFOG is the station I listen to the most. (I've been buying their Live from the Archives CDs online since volume 9.)  I discovered 10 at 10 in the evenings when I was listening to KFOG after school, when I heard a bunch of 80s songs in a row.  I noticed that they played 80s songs fairly often (But not every day) at 10 PM.  I have been obsessed with 80s music - people tell me they don't understand it as I was born in 1983, but there's something about it that just draws me in!  I gradually started paying attention to them saying "10 at 10" and figured the program was called 10 at 10.  I wondered if they played it in the morning too; I tuned into it one morning and sure enough, there it was.  Since then I've been listening religiously.

I am not a big fan of the 70s or 60s...I guess too far before my time...but I have found myself listening to some very interesting 70s sets more than once.  The 80s sets I find most interesting as there's many times when I hear a song I haven't heard in a really long time, or ever, and have found myself googling the lyrics to figure out what it is and then download the MP3.  At first I was excited to hear when a set was in the 90s but most of them, especially the ones 1994+ I have found a bit disappointing.  (Annalisa did do a killer 1999 though!)

Many of my friends comment how obsessed with 10 at 10 I am but they don't get it!  I thought I was the only one...then I couldn't believe it when I found this group.  When I saw the domain name '10 at 10 club.com' my eyes just about popped out of my head...  ;D

Welcome to the club, Radical347!  It seems you like 10 at 10 for many of the same reasons we do, it can be a nice trip back in time.  Many of us are online in the morning during the week when Annalisa plays her 10 at 10 sets, but you'll also see occasional posts all throughout the day.

have fun!

Welcome R347!

I'm probably the most 80's obsessed member here, so I will be interesting to see what you have to say the next time Annalisa takes us there.  I'm also the guy responsible for the Database of setlists (aka the Shraytabase), which you might find interesting.  You can get it from the link on the Main Discusion page in the Stream of Consciousness thread (and if you do, check out the set from 3/6/03).

Cheers!

Hey, belated greetings from one of the two Oregonians in our group, although I'm not sure if I'm allowed to make that claim yet--only moved here a year ago. If you're as snarky as Mr. T. Cat, all will be well. And Mshray needed some company defending 80s sets. ;)

Thanks Geoff.  I lived in San Mateo in 1986 and 1987.  I listened to the 10@10 on KFOG and I actually have 2 1987 shows taped on an old cassette.  I often record the  current shows on my computer and then put them on my cell phone and listen to them when I work out. Your site is terrific as I now can find other 10@10s each day and choose from different years.  Thanks for all of your good work!  Jim

Got it from Dave Morey who lives north of me here in Mi.
I'm sure I would have never found this place without his help. I'm just a geezer who played bass in a few groups back in the 70s and 80s and Dave is helping me learn a few things about radio production. He grew up about a mile from me as a kid before he moved West. He is a great guy - glad he came back to Michigan. Sorry about the cryptic stuff. Once Dave is back on, I will be less cryptic....

Cool--we're glad you found us. No worries about being obscure, you just kind of caught us off-guard. Give him our best--his replacement is doing a stellar job, but not the same as when Dave was in the driver's seat.

Who'd you play bass with? Anyone we'd have heard of out on the west coast?

Mostly unknown groups in the Detroit area and mostly in the 70s and 80s. I do sit in with a few now and then, but don't go gigging these days as I'm getting too old to be carting around amps PAs etc. I played bass for Syreeta Wright in the late 60s BEFORE she got her Motown contract and married Stevie Morris, but that was about it. Unfortunatel I hear she had passed a few years back in the L.A. area.

I look at radio production as an art and I'm certainly at the beginning of the learning curve and fortunate to have Dave to teach me that it's more than just a voice and more than just playin' tunes. I'm an electronics geek and "ham" radio op (recently retired from 40+ years in printed circuit design and electronic component purchasing).

Hi, Rip, and welcome.  I have a few early Syreeta tunes - "I Can't Give Back the Love I Feel for You," a cover of the Beatles' "She's Leaving Home" - but don't know the rest of her catalog.  Sorry to hear she's passed on.

Did you ever sit in with the Flaming Ember?  I was briefly in touch with the singer/drummer and got the impression they'd stayed in the Detroit area.  (I used to write about music here and there.)

Cheers,
Gaz.

OK on the Syreeta tunes. Yes the last I had heard she had moved to London for awhile and then heard she had
passed from Cancer. She was heavy ito singing Gospel/Jazz when I met her and being a North Woodward boy who grew up on R&R it was quite a change for me but a great challenge to learn some R&B to broaden my music horizons.

I do remember the group called The Flaming Embers but have never heard them live. Both Glenn and Gary Quackenbush (from SRC) live nearby and I have had a chance to play with them and more recently with a cover band called "No One Else" - they are on YouTube if you're curious. That's about it-I still play but am not
actively seeking regular band/gigs. -Rip

Hi Melissa, welcome to our little playground!

Hi Melissa, welcome to our little playground!

indeed, welcome sundaygirl!  (anyone named after a Blondie song is a friend of mine!)  Check out the 10@10 Glossary thread, we have our own language sometimes. We're a bit snarky -- and definitely music-geeky -- but basically harmless.  ;)  We love it when AL (that's our abbreviation for Annalisa) plays songs rarely-or-never heard on 10@10 before, and lately (thanks to the Facebook request-a-tune option) that's been happening a lot... and we couldn't be happier.

Hi everyone, long time listener, first time caller. I tried the register link a few months ago and then had to email Geoff to activate my account. Man, this is the most exclusive club I've ever joined.  ;)

My name is Nate, 35, and I live in the East Bay. I've been listening to 10@10 since about 2004. Dave hooked me on Translator (is that a "trina"?) during an early morning drive to go surfing at Ocean Beach. He's my hero forever because he gave me a birthday shoutout just before retiring.

My link to radio is kinda funny. I grew up in the Central Vallye, listening to classical music until junior high. Never cared about pop so I completely missed the 80's. Started listening to the radio and all I found was Color Me Badd, Paula Abdul, etc. (besides country, christian, and spanish) and turned it off again.

In high school, I found KDJK-95.1 from Modesto and loved it. Shows like Metal Shop, Rockline, Dr. Ruth, and 5 pm Get the Led Out got me really interested in rock (classic up to heavy metal). Nirvana was #1 in the Rockline countdown forever and things were hopping.

http://www.modestoradiomuseum.org/KDJK%20history.html

I got into the college radio station after leaving for school. When I moved up to the bay area for work, KFOG was the closest thing besides KUSF.

I really like 10@10, especially when AL or DM played songs I'd never heard. It's hilarious to hear 80's songs that my wife is familiar with but I'm hearing for the first time. Or those songs you overheard just once at a friend's house -- "oh THAT'S who sang that song!"

Things I don't like as much about AL's approach: repeating the same audio clips (sinead disses the pope, "those hep Stray Cats", "you're no jack kennedy", "it's called The Internet"), generic blues in every decade (SRV) -- although Dave did this too, too many "themed" shows, and she won't play Metallica or some other Dave breakouts. Things I do like about her: playing other non-rock breakouts like LL Cool J at least for humor/flavor's sake, her general creativity and desire to avoid a formula.

Because of my age, I prefer 80's/90's shows but I like an all motown 60's set too (does AL do that like Dave did?) Thanks for letting me join and I'll be glad to join the chat occasionally!

Hi everyone, long time listener, first time caller...

Welcome  Nate!  We're snarky but harmless. We agree about AL's repeat clips -- I think she was really into downloading new ones in the beginning but I guess she's a busy gal. To answer your question, the Motown Monday/Soul Patrol sets seem to have been left behind in the Morey era; AL has tried a few of her own recurring themes (Movie Monday, Funny Friday) and some have caught on, some not. She has said she's more about sprinkling a bit of everything -- including the occasional Hit from Hell -- into each regular set rather than doing all-soul or all-instrumental or all-anything.

Our big concern now is whether the new Program Director contuinues to give her free reign (AL's been mostly on her own since she took over nearly 2 years ago) or whether he tries to homogenize/playlist things (as 10@10s in other cities do).

Hi everyone...

Hi Nate, thanks for the nice intro post...!

agree on the clips.  you'd think that Battle Of the Network Stars was one of three shows on that year judging from the frequency.  I like your round up of your radio life, and interesting that you listened to classical while young.  When I read what your wrote about generic blooze in every decade and then you cited SRV as a regular transgressor, part of me was all 'hey, but he was good' .. I thought that back then and still have a fond place for him, but I can see why he doesn't float everyone's boat.

It's just music after all. You can't take pop or rock TOO seriously  ....  but, then again, we do.  And if she plays Dreadlock Holiday ONE MORE TIME....

Hi everyone, long time listener, first time caller.

Welcome, Nate!  ("If it's a boy.")  (Silence, Prince!)  I'm Joe, aka Gaz, a 38yo copy editor in NYC who lived in SF a decade+ ago.  Glad to hear of your musical upbringing - I'd grown up in hair-metal-saturated rural Pittsburgh area with a fondness for oldies, and knew a change had come when my college radio station played "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in December '91.  I consider rock's golden age to be '66-'75 but enjoy being surprised by AL's '80s and '90s offerings.  Hope you've been amused by our exchanges here; feel free to jump in anytime!

Cheers,
Gaz.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I hope AL keeps trying new things and her prog director doesn't change much. I got a kick out of her playing "Baby Got Back" and then unable to stop giggling after.

Variety is the spice of life. I definitely don't listen to 10@10 to hear familiar stuff. I want to hear new-old songs or forgotten ones with some link to the others. I also tend not to listen to KFOG other than New Music Thursdays.

I stopped listening during the day a year or two ago when it started to sound like 97.3 with Michael F. Spearhead and Plain White T's. Augh.

Welcome Nate. I am one of the other "gals" here and long-time 10@10 clubber. I treasure the birthday sets Dave honored me with. I grew up in SF listening to 60's-70's rock and soul/r&B. I am not too knowledgable with the 80's/90/s sets. Usually I stream KISS 98.1 online at work. I like Disco and not ashamed about it. That's the way (uh huh, uh huh) I like it (thank you KC). It's a great group here and I learn a lot from the collective knowledge base. Some very wonderful and intelligent guys!

Welcome Nate.  I don't participate as much as I once did, but still pop in every now and then (mostly I lurk during sets, trying not to spend too much time whilst trying to keep up with my workload).  Mostly an old school "hard" rocker, with a healthy respect and enjoyment of other related genres (pop, funk and soul, new wave, punk, etc.).  But I'm mostly happy when someone plays guitars really loudly.

Still, I forgive you your SRV comments.  And that WAS what the mid to late 80s was for me.   8)

Greetings and welcome Nate!  I'm known hereabouts as urth, which is short for Urthwerm, which evolved from the comic book/cartoon "Earthworm Jim", and they often call me Speedo but my real name is Mr. Earl. No, wait--scratch that last bit. My real name is Jim.  I'm a former San Franciscan who's now living in rural Oregon and attempting to start an artisan goat cheese company with my wife. Thank god for the interweb or I'd be loonytunes by now.

Anyway, hope you continue to hang around here. We can be a curmudgeonly bunch but mostly harmless. There's a strong leaning toward favoring the 60s and 70s years among the locals (myself included) but things have changed a little since Annalisa took over the reins and started introducing some new material beyond the same hundred or so songs Dave would draw from for his 80s and 90s sets (today's 95 set being a prime example).  And it doesn't hurt that we've got a few more 80s/90s partisans in our ranks in recent months (see also: Sundaygal, SFGuy, Radical1347--or whatever those digits are) so you shouldn't feel alone.
cheers,
urth aka Jim

Hey everyone,

I am new to this group but am a big fan of Annalisa and 10@10 (even as I grow more frustrated with KFOG's general programming).  Some of you may know me from her facebook page - Lisa Corman-Roberts.

Let's see, what else should you know about me:
likes:  good music, meryl streep, crossword puzzles, gardening, yoga, swimming, zumba, ice cream, almond butter and chocolate, people who think, all teams from Chicago except one (see below), good wine, good beer, good alcohol, soccer, hiking and reading.

dislikes: people who follow blindly (mostly those who listen to the likes of Hannity, Beck and Limbaugh), the Chicago CUBS, Notre Dame, SportsCenter though I am a sports fan, Steely Dan, Colplay, the song Faster by Matt Nathanson, really bad music (think Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Britney Spears - I have a daughter approaching tween age with tween friends - I don't have to listen to it yet but I hear it in other venues), bad beer, tequila....and technology as I am a bit of a ludite.

Alright, if you have any questions for me - let me know.

Good night.

Hi lattegirl, welcome to this place.  One thing I learned after joining is there are a few regional 10@10s around (see the Regional 10@10's across the time zones! thread (http://10at10club.com/forum/index.php?board=2.0).  Interesting stuff, but KFOG's version is the original and still the best.

Other radio stuff is always welcome.  I recommend browsing the various threads if you have time (ha!) to see what makes us tick. A lot of what we do here is good clean harmless snarky fun.  We take radio and pop music seriously, but realize that it's not always serious.  Most of us are on Facebook and pop onto AL's page.

hmm, I wonder if Coldplay ever covered Steely Dan...

Nevertheless, I still check in here several times a week, even if I'm not carving out as much time to listen to Annalisa's works of art as much as I was a couple of months ago.

I'm Rod, longtime member of this little group.  I don't post as much as some of the others around here, or as much as I once did, but you'll see me around from time to time.  I'm lean more towards the rockier side of music, loud guitars, mostly.  It took a while, but I've found a certain respect for Steely Dan over the years, mainly through influences here.  But you should stick around anyway.

Enjoy!

Just noticed this.

My real name is Tim, I've been listening to 10@10 since 1998. Around that time I participated heavily at the 10@10 Yahoo! Boards, up through about 2001, then known as "lufaphs". I checked in sporadically on the new board in 2005, but went four full years between posts, before starting to participate again in 2009.

I was raised in Marin County, went to Sonoma State for college, where I got my BS in Mathematics. Went to the Peace Corps in Papua New Guinea 1994-1996, where I taught Math/Science/English. Upon returning to the states I started working in the SF Financial District, first at an advertising agency, then doing workers compensation actuarial work.

I fell in love with Top 40 music about the time I was 14. At first I listened to John Leader's "Countdown America", then Casey Kasem and Rick Dees (Kasem was the consumate professional, but Dees has been the survivor). As I got older, I realized there was more to the musical world than just Top 40, and I often find myself not being as familiar with 80's/90's alt music as I should be.

Welcome Lattegirl. I'm also one of the old time clubbers here. Good times, good and honest musicologists here. I think I have met everyone at least once, most many times. We have infrequent club gatherings but usually at least once a year. I enjoy concerts and prefer hard rock with killer guitars and drums. There is a softer side to me also. I go to the Bridge benefit every year (I have stalked Neil Young at Sharks games) and I'm also a Deadhead. Disco does not suck. SF Giants and SJ Sharks keep me entertained. I'm going to Chicago in November and plan on going to the Blackhawks v Flames game. Like beer and wine and vodka. Dislike champagne and chardonnay. I'm a fourth generation San Franciscan. I always thought I was third-gen but just learned my Dad was third-gen.
Rock on.

Since I really didn't say much in my previous passage, tet me expound a little further on one of my favorite subjects...me.

Musical tastes are all over the map. At various times in my past I have been fanatical about prog rock, new wave, the Dead, just about anything from New Orleans and its environs, and alt-country aka y'allternative.  I still have a fondness for most if not all of the above, but lately I mostly listen to garage rock, old r&b, bebop, or recordings of 10@10. Fave artists include (to name a few) NRBQ, the Kinks, the Young Fresh Fellows/Minus 5, Los Lobos, Elvis Costello, Uncle Tupelo, Dave Alvin, the Skeletons, Thelonious Monk, Miles, and probably three dozen more bands I'll think of as soon as I hit "post." The list goes on for ever.

I'm a big fan of the Giants, have been since the 70s, so last year was the year I've been waiting nearly my whole life for. I have a passing interest in other pro sports, but they all pale in comparison to the National Pastime, imo.

I'm also very much into food, and am currently, with my wife and a few part-time helpers, trying to get an artisan goat cheese-making business off the ground just outside Portland. Well, I guess you could say we're off the ground, but we don't have a lot of altitude. Yet. I also like good tea, coffee, beer, wine, and other well-made comestibles, which makes Portland and NW Oregon a great place to be as there's lots of fine examples of all of the above produced within very close proximity.

OK, that should suffice for now. Welcome to our little kaffeeklatsch, Lattegirl. I think you'll fit in well here.

Hello 10at10 Club,
My name's Josh (Henig), I'm a Virgo, and I hate mayonnaise.
I was a wallflower on the Annalisa page for most of my tenure there until Kool & the Gang yelled at me this past summer, "Get your back up off the wall!" So I did and am now a frequent -- sometimes manic -- poster. That pattern may be repeated here, at least the wallflower at the beginning phase.
My musical background started with me playing piano and clarinet in grade school and accelerated when I became a dj and guitar player in college. From almost the first moment I picked up my guitar and played, I wanted to be in a rock band and take over the world. Shockingly enough, that did not happen. Sadly, the callouses disappeared from my fingers long ago, although I have an unused pool of funds collected from a past birthday with which I am supposed to buy a Telecaster.
I have been perceived as an "Indie Rock Snob" and called "The Emperor of Cheesy Music." To celebrate the yin and yang of my musical taste, I have chosen the cover of the Feelies' seminal nerd rock album, Crazy Rhythms, as my avatar, and the end of this quote from Poison's hair metal anthem, "Nothin' but a Good Time," as my username:
You see I raise a toast to all of us
Who are breakin' our backs every day
If wantin' the good life is such a crime
Lord, then put me away
Here's to ya

I was a wallflower on the Annalisa page for most of my tenure there until Kool & the Gang yelled at me this past summer, "Get your back up off the wall!"

Yeah, but Kool Moe Dee says, "How Ya Like Me Now?"   ;)

This is a great place to be!  Welcome to Fantasy Island.  Smiles, everyone, smiles!

You hate mayonnaise?  What gives?

Does that include Miracle Whip?  Welcome, Josh.

Yah, RGM, metaphorically speaking  ::)
Tinka Cat, my brother used to consume large spoonfuls of mayonnaise and margarine out of the jar while watching morning cartoons. That partially explains the mayonnaise aversion (not sure why I wasn't turned off to butter and butter-like spreads).

I know. I usually bring this up in front of my classes at least once over the course of a school year, and there are always quite a few people who hate on the mayo.
Also, topic 3 under your Google search is what I was talking about when referring to the movie, Undercover Brother.

Hiya Josh/HTY! Welcome to our little corner of the interweb!

I fall on the pro-mayo side of things, but in moderation. Never on potato chips but definitely on burgers and sandwiches. And negative to Miracle Whip, even though my mom kept it around through my entire childhood. WTF is the reason for that stuff anyway? Feh!

Ditto real mayo, no Miracle Whip (which is BIG in the Midwest and South).  Being from the Northeast, it was always Hellmanns (aka Best Foods Mayo west of the Rockies; like Dreyers in the West/Edys east of the Rockies).  Yes, a dab of real mayo in tuna, on deli sandwiches and on sliced tomato.  Like Radical I must admit, as a child I dipped potato chips in mayo.  I confess!   Anyway, welcome Josh, one of my college pals regularly jams with The Feelies in the NYC area.  Cheers!  'Wayback' Dave

Hmm, mayo struck a chord.
I don't really like creamy foods, in general, and am equally repelled by ranch dressing and white clam chowder.  Even semi-creamy tomato soup kind of grosses me out.
When confronted by burger or sandwich that has been mayoed, I try to remain calm, remove offensive white material with napkins, and store these napkins out of sight. I can tolerate the traces of mayo left over.
That is so cool about your friend and The Feelies!  I've seen them live close to ten times.

I've got the trifecta of mayonnaise, pickles, and relish hatred, but I do love mustard. I am emphatic that mustard be on sandwiches I order and not mayo. Gazoo, does your condimentaphobia extend to ketchup? Ketchup is so wonderful.
Wait a minute, what's that I'm hearing? Townshend, Daltrey and various studio musicians are hard at work on the belated follow-up to Quadrophenia, called Condimentaphobia? Jimmy Cooper survives his horrific fall down Beachy Head only to age into an agoraphobic, confined to his bedroom to avoid the omnipresence of condiments. The Who remake their sound into monotonous electronica to replicate Jimmy's mental state.

Haha, you guys are slaying me.  Mike: I've gotten turned off of Burrell of late.  I've heard too many reports of him being a total asshole.  Plus, the shaved chest - ick.  HTY: I'm OK with ketchup, but I don't seek it.  More often I eat fries dry.  I used to put soy sauce on them at home.  I'm just not that into vinegar-y things.  (I don't like the vast majority of salad dressings either.)  And I have bad memories of my grandmother, in the throes of Alzheimer's in '83, making and storing hundreds of jars of picalilly in the cellar in the event of something cataclysmic happening.

Greetings.

I'm a new kid on the block here, so per request of the admin,
here's a bit of the relevant biography.

I am (mumble) years old, which places me firmly in middle age.
Funny, I don't feel that old.  (Well, sometimes my knees do.)

I guess I can credit my parents for my interest in music.  When I
was still in single digits, I was instructed in the care and use
of my father's "high fidelity" system.  In those days, a hi-fi had
one or more components that was built from a kit or scratch.  We
had both.  And tubes!  It took at least thirty seconds for the
amplifier to warm up.

Our collection of long-playing record albums was probably larger
than most, and included a diverse selection.  Broadway shows
(Oliver, Bye-bye Birdie), folk music (Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Peter
Paul & Mary), comedy (Alan Sherman, Lou Monte's Pepino the Italian
Mouse), jazz (Ramsey Louis Trio), classical music, spanish guitar,
and even some accordian records were just some of the highlights.
Stereo LPs were still a relatively new technology, and many album
jackets carried a prominent notice explaining that "this stereo LP
may safely be played on monoaural equipment" with no loss of
listening enjoyment.

I was born and raised in the Garden State, and my earliest radio
memories are of listening with a transistor radio to Dan Ingram
and Cousin Brucie on WABC.  In the late '60s my family purchased
some FM radios.  Soon we discovered what was the greatest radio
station of all time, bar none:  WNEW-FM, out of New York City.  I
will brook no argument on this point.  I grew up listening to the
likes of Scott Muni and the legendary Nightbird, Alison Steele.
Sadly, the radio-listening experience has largely been going
downhill for the past forty years since those heady times.

These days, outside of 10@10, I don't listen to the radio very
much.  And I haven't been paying a lot of attention to popular
music for the past twenty-five years or so.  The broad genre
encompassed by the term "rock" has gotten a little long in the
tooth, in my estimation, so rarely do I hear something that
strikes me as fresh and interesting.

I still enjoy a wide variety of music.  I guess there's only two
kinds of music I don't like -- country and western.  (Ha!  I make
joke.)  Actually, I'm not a fan of what passes for country these
days, which sounds to me simply like a particularly twangy version
of rock, as opposed to bluegrass, which I greatly enjoy.  And I
never could muster any appreciation for opera.  At the other end
of my musical spectrum, I am most interested in progressive rock
and jazz fusion.

Greetings.

I'm a new kid on the block here...

Welcome, sir!

I'm also well into middle age and grew up listening to Dan Ingram and (as I entered teenhood) WNEW-FM (tho' I was more fond of the pre-playlist, free-form version of WPLJ)

We're snarky and opinionated here, but harmless. We loved Dave Morey and Annalisa's versions of 10@10; Renee's... notsomuch. But we still listen, if only to bitch about Mr Constantine's "improvements".  We also keep track of the other 10@10s and 9@9s around the country (LA, NY, Chicago, Austin, and... Redding).

Greetings.

I'm a new kid on the block here, so per request of the admin,
here's a bit of the relevant biography.

I am (mumble) years old, which places me firmly in middle age.
Funny, I don't feel that old.  (Well, sometimes my knees do.)

Lots of interesting details there. Welcome, sir.

Greetings.

I'm a new kid on the block here...

I'm also well into middle age and grew up listening to Dan Ingram and (as I entered teenhood) WNEW-FM (tho' I was more fond of the pre-playlist, free-form version of WPLJ)

Oh, we listened to WPLJ too.  If memory serves, they started the
tradition of playing Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant" in its entirety
on Thanksgiving.  That seemed like a big deal back then.  I did do a bit
of dial-hopping, and listened to perhaps a half-dozen different
stations.  But as you know, this was well before digital pre-sets, and
as WPLJ and WNEW were essentially on opposite ends of the dial,
eventually I settled on the best one.

FM:  The Rise and Fall of Rock Radio, by Richard Neer

Although largely focused on WNEW, it also talks about other New York
radio stations (like WPLJ), and even other "free-form" stations around
the country.  How can you go wrong with a book that devotes an entire
chapter to Alison Steele?

Speaking of the Nightbird, a couple of years back I found a collection
of MP3s of various snippets of her patter; hearing them again really
took me back.  You might try searching for your favorite DJs -- it's
always amazing what one can find out on the Inter-tubes.

And then there's this web site:

News clippings, magazine articles, air checks, and even some lengthy
recordings of DJs' shows.  Warning:  do not go to this site if you are
busy!

As the second newest member to this forum, welcome!  :D

Kudos and thanks to CapnJack for posting the results of the best of set
voting every day.  With the current minimalist approach of the RR era,
that information is no longer noted on the set lists on KFOG's web site.
It doesn't seem as significant as it once did, but it's still nice to
see what was most popular.

Yes -- I've read Neer's book. Fascinating stuff, and he was one of my faves on the station.

A little late to the party, but let me add my voice welcoming Sir Dischead (gotta be careful of my typing there) to our group. Sounds as though you are well qualified to join this motley assemblage of music and radio OCD practitioners.

I assume the "disc" in your handle refers to the vinyl kind, but I have to tell you that your avatar is identical to the very first frisbee I ever owned (and still do, albeit in somewhat more battered condition).

Also, I too have read the Richard Neer book, and thought it was a really great read. (I owned it once upon a time, but loaned my copy to a friend and as is the way of loaned books, never got it back. Oh well.)  Really wish Vin Scelsa would write his memoirs sometime. He's getting up there too, and I'd hate for him to go without putting his experiences down on paper...errr, microchip.
Jim aka Urth

PS If you want to know any more about the rest of us, feel free to read through the previous messages in this thread.

Although I still have all my LPs, as well as my 45s, as my avatar reveals my nym is indeed a
reference to the plastic flatball.

It's not the best picture, but look carefully at both it and your own disc.  It's not a Wham-O disc,
but a "Mystery Y."  There aren't that many of them, so if you really have one, it's a rare item.
It predates the existence of the Wham-O Mfg. Corporation.  The "mystery" part is that no one
knows what company made them.  The "Y" comes from the shirt of the person on the right-hand
side of the disc.

The most interesting thing Dischead (he has a name, I'll let him share it) told me during my aggressive
interrogation, was that he claims he still uses a modem!

Oh no!  I've been outed!

I'm not a luddite, I just play one on the Internet...

Yes, it's true I'm still using an analog modem with a dial-up service.  I still use 3.5" floppy disks,
VHS video tapes, and my collection of 150+ 10@10 sets is on cassette.  I haven't completely
forgone the luxuries of modern technology -- I shave with a single-blade injection safety razor.

No, I do not belong to the Church of the Latest and the Greatest, Her Lady of the Shiny Bauble.
The funny thing is, I'm willing to wager that I used e-mail and the Internet ARPAnet before
before anyone else here did.  Eventually the leading edge becomes the trailing edge, but if it
still works for me, then I'll keep using it.

OK, I'll play.  I had (still have?) a CompuServe email address, and was on the WELL.  I'm not good at remembering what year that means, but late 80's or so I would guess.

Guess mine is not quite as identical as I thought--it's plainly marked as a Wham-O. Got it as a premium by sending in several empty Kool-aid packages some time in the 60s. Couldn't tell you what year exactly.

I do try to get out and play disc golf whenever I can--there are a few good courses around here (I live in Oregon, outside Portland) and I have a couple of Bay Area pals that like to play several courses down there.

The ARPAnet mention should be a big clue.  Sorry, you're not even in the
same decade.

I think people would be surprised to find out just how open things were
back in those early years.  But you needed a computer terminal and a
modem (300 baud in those days), which were not common items.

I'll take your word for it.  I had a 300 baud modem too!
