KPOO's DJ Marilynn is all over the map today: some blues, followed by Floyd Cramer's country piano instrumental "Last Date", followed by "HR Pufnstuf"! maybe Marilynn's been, er, puffin' stuff!

turns out Judge is sitting in for Marilynn, who went home sick. (From puffin' all that stuff, I guess.)

OMGWTFLOL! Judge plays Rockwell's justifiably forgotten follow-up to "Somebody's Watching Me" -- "Obscene Phone Caller". Where is he now?
-
and another OMGWTFLOL for another forgotten follow-up: the late great Jermaine Stewart's "Word is Out".

and now Lisa Lisa's tears are burning up the pillow-- she's "All Cried Out". Judge is really unearthing the lost '80s today.
-
this has been Judge's most entertaining hour in ages: Stevie's "Go Home" followed by the MJGs, "In My House". Hope the '80s-fest continues.
-
and now the other Jermaine -- Jackson (with help from MJ) -- and his fab "Tell Me I'm Not Dreamin'", later covered by Robert Palmer.

He's making up for being MIA so much recent weeks, with those substandard interviews and all.
-
OMFG! Eddie Murphy/Rick James, "Party All the Time". A better record than it got credit for at the time.

followed by New Edition teaming up with Ray Parker Jr on "Mr Telephone Man". And it's a NE twin-spin: "A Little Bit of Love" is lovely. I am in bubblegum-soul heaven.
-
Ha! Judge segs from one dead queen to another: Luther V into Sylvester ('tho from what I hear, it woulda been the other way around). Do you wanna funk, indeed!
-
Hoo Lawd! early Janet Jackson followed by Teena Marie, "Lover Girl". Touche ole!
-
New to me: Billy Paul doing a *truly* shameless "Sexual Healing" rip-off called "Sexual Therapy".
-
sorry, Judge -- I draw the line at Lionel Ritchie ;)

I respectfully disagree. But I'm with you on the majesty of "Mr. Telephone Man," "In My House," "Lovergirl" (one of the first songs I ever had, um, stirrings to), and "Go Home" (which I actually haven't heard since it was a hit; maybe I should go YouTube it now).
"Obscene Phone Caller" is worth watching on YouTube as well. Guy was a freak. And his British accent was even worse than RFTW's.

Always happy to switch over to JJ on KPOO for some Tues morning '60s: some forgotten Smokey, "That's What Love is Made Of"
-
Diana just woke up to "The Happening"... and it can happen to YOU!

Improbably sampled in Fantasia's recent near-hit "Hood Boy."

There's no longer any such thing as "improbably sampled", is there? ;)

'CDX-ing for awhile, and Suzy Q & Chris N are foolshly layin' their hearts on the table.
-
wow, an Andrew Gold song I'd never heard ("Go Back Home Again") is followed by the Fabulous Poodles "Bionic Man", which is, well, fab. Talk about a forgotten band of that period.
-
'CDX Flashback of the day (so far): Frampton's orig studio version of "I Wanna Go To The Sun".

but Neil & the Springfield nearly top it with "Broken Arrow", one of my fave comps of his.
"they married for peace and were gone. did you see them?"
-
Green Grass & High Tides -- and it ain't even St Patty's Day!
-
different kinda flashbacks now that I've switched over to WLNG: Robin McNamara's fabulously bubblegummy "Lay A Little Lovin' On Me". Honey doggone it, ah depend upon it!
-
OMFG! "Sad Sweet Dreamer"! ooh-wah-wah-ooh-wah-wah-ooh!
-
my heart is doin' flip-flops -- "Goody Goody Gumdrops". Love the way they rhyme "baby blue eyes" with "dainty shoe size".
-
Now yeah! boom! nitty gritty! Shirley Ellis with the orig version, before Gladys & Co.
and it's followed -- Nugget o' the Day, for sure -- by Vanity Fare's *other* hit, the pre- "Hitchin' a Ride" ditty "Early in the Morning". Have not heard this in decades.
-
it's a miracle to be hearing "It's a Miracle"! One of Mr Manilow's best singles, with great backing vox by Lady Flash (if they were indeed called that, at that point). 'LNG has been beyond spectacular this afternoon.

EITM is a major favorite of mine - I love those oh-so-Gypso-Russo-Euro melodies (see also: "Those Were the Days," "Little Man").
And I do believe Barry's backing babes were indeed Lady Flash at that point - didja know one of them was Reparata (as in, and the Delrons, of "I'm Nobody's Baby Now" semi-fame)?

Yes, I did know that -- and I wish Dave'd unearth their only hit, "Street Singin'".
-
'LNG is poised to wow me again today: just tuned in and I get Dusty's "Brand New Me", followed by Cher's "Way of Love"! it's gay pop heaven!
-
tell it, Bay-Bay! the 4 Seasons, tellin' it to the precipitation.
-
Holy Flaming Mother of King Kamehameha: Don Ho and "Tiny Bubbles"!
-
'LNG's stream crapped out so I switched to country: the orig Don Williams version of "Tulsa Time", which beats Crapton all to hell. And now Donna Fargo's delightfully gospelly "You Can't Be a Beacon (If Your Light Don't Shine)", an almost-hit that's far better than her cutesy pop Top Tens.
-
Sweeney saves the day with the Bangles' "Goin' Down to Liverpool".
-
OMG -- it's Sweeney's last Drive Time show!
-

he'll still be doing the weekend show. He hasn't said who's replacing him in Drive Time. oo! it's Free's *other* hit, "Wishing Well", sounding just like BadCo.
-

I was wondering if something was up--the last couple times I've tuned in he's been absent for one reason or another. Bummer. Hopefully the Rock Show will continue!
-
Ike's nuts + Tina's bush = Nutbush! borrowing some synth from the Ohio Players' "Funky Worm".
-
as much as we bash Phil Collins here, I must say "Two Hearts" is a neat little pop single, one of his better efforts, IMHO (and one that Dave's never played -- it would be a welcome addition to '88/'89, methinks).
-
OMG! R.Dean Taylor's "There's a Ghost in My House" -- a hit in the UK, tho' it barely registered in the States. And I'll say it again : The 4 Tops shoulda covered it. "there's a ghost in mah 7 rooms of gloom!"
-
Sweeney's staying away from the mic here in the last hour, just playing some great tunes. We're getting Martha and the Vandellas' Dancin' In the Street right now. He says he's got a special song picked for his finale--wonder what it's going to be?
I shot him an e-mail wishing him well, and asked for a Kinks tune--not holding my breath if I'll get it or not.
-
God, how I love Chris Farlowe's cover of "Out of Time".
-
And he wraps it up with the Beatles' In My Life.
Not too much sentimentality in the final minutes, but he did seem to get a little misty when thanking everyone for all their good wishes about half an hour ago.
He mentioned he's going off to do a TV program on the Manchester United football club, a subject close to his Mancunian heart no doubt.

if he ran for office he'd be the Mancunian Candidate. ;)

OMFG and TANC of the Week: Greg actually just played "7 Rooms of Gloom"!
-
Ree-Ree's dishin' out the dirt on everybody... givin' each other the 4-1-1 on who drop-kicked who this week. I'm amazed that Aretha-lover Dave has never played this....
...or BoyzIIMen, "MotownPhilly", which followed. "MP" is certainly superior to CMB's "All 4 Love"
-
So I got home early this afternoon and, with some time to kill before John Adams, I finally remembered "Lost 45s" -- it's been ages since I listened, I usually forget, and besides, the station's web page takes For. Ev. ER. to load with dial-up. But I finally get set up and... they've upgraded their player and I can't listen without downloading Adobe Flash Player or somesuch. Damn.
