Title: 27 July 2012: an Olympics set
Post by: RGMike on July 26, 2012, 07:06:32 PM
While I'm glad we're getting theme sets regularly, this has the potential to be Cliche City. (a la the infamous Giants set)

I do agree that this has the potential to be really awful. I tried to spice it up a bit, but I doubt any of my requests have a chance.

Muse's "official" (?) Olympics theme : "Survival". Sorry, I'm not impressed. Sounds like a rejected Bond theme.

Agreed r/ Muse. A little over-anthemic, and as AW posts, sounds like 30's Germany.

BOS1 ELP -- inevitable, but great to hear.

"Rocky" -- also inevitable, but less great to hear.

Themed sets need to be pretty rare to be fun. So, sure, Mother's Day, Tax Day, Halloween, Turkeys... that's fine. But no Secretary Day, Arbor Day, World Series, Superbowl, Presidents Day, Mardi Gras, Final 4, Easter, etc.

Also, I think the best themed sets are the ones with a personal touch. So the Christmas one with all the Foghead phoned-in greetings is nice. Or Dave commenting on the Turkeys and what he liked about them. You gotta be involved!

The Giants set was probably the worst one ever.

Instead of using a whole 10@10 for a theme, why not bring back "my 3 songs"? Then you get to have fun with a theme but it's short enough not to ruin your day with a straight 45 minute set of dreck.

And it gets worse with "Chariots of Fire".

oh, those "Negro sprinters"!

BOS2 Vangelis! I remember seeing the movie and sprinting (heh) to a record store around the corner to see if they had the music. One of the great #1 singles you never hear on the radio

BOS to Bill COnti and Vangelis, two #1 songs I haven't heard in ages.

OK, clever segue from US Gymnasts to "New Gold Dream" but the song is a too-frequent-flyer.

Ditto. I was expecting a lot of "One Moment in Time" kinda crap. or "Man in Motion" (which may yet appear, I suppose).

uber LN, Queen.  Honestly, I would rather hear "Killer Queen" than "We Will Rock You\We Are the Champions".  This is true of almost any song played at football games.  I never need to here "Hells Bells" ever again, for instance.

"Bicycle" would have been a much better Queen choice. Still, one LN in a set ain't too shabby.

Actually, the theme song from the Barcelona Olympics that Freddie sang with Montserrat would have been a better choice.

Not many fat-bottomed girls in the Olympics. Well, maybe women's weighlifting.

Pretty damn heavy on the prog: ELO, Yes, ELP, Queen, and Peter Gabriel. (Which in no small part accounts for the length of the set.)

That said, I'd have bos'd the Yes track with a VHM for Gabriel, ELP and Simple Minds.

Yeah, that Giants set was dreadful. This one, not nearly as bad.

I didn't hear this set, but reviewing the list afterwards shows it was quite interesting. So kudos to AL.
