iirc, he did something odd the last time but promised a "real" HFH set next time around, so... we'll see.

This the last Friday the 13th until next February (actually have 3 next year). Hopefully we'll get one.

Indeed, as of yesterday, he's taking calls for ideas (not to be confused with "taking requests").

You can also post suggestions on his blog. The usual suspects so far (almost all from the '70s) -- HFH needs new blood, IMHO.

Hi Dave,
I for one LOVE the occasional HFH set for precisely the reason you usually mention, namely that you need the bad to appreciate the good. But I also like HFH for the same reason we all look when we drive past a wreck, namely "How the heck could someone let THAT happen?" mixed with "Oooh, how bad IS it?". In that spirit here's list of songs that are not only Hits From Hell, they are all Chart-Topping Billboard #1 Hits From Hell. I'm sure there are lots I missed - I only picked one Milli Vanilli & other than the Macarena I kind of stopped at the end of the 80's. I especially hope you can play "Ringo", 'cuz I've only heard it once before.
Air Supply - The One That You Love - 1981
Alan O'Day - Undercover Angel - 1977
Anita Ward - Ring My Bell - 1979
Bad English - When I See You Smile - 1989
Barbra Streisand & Neil Diamond - You Don't Bring Me Flowers - 1978
Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods - Billy, Don't Be a Hero - 1974
Bobby Goldsboro - Honey - 1968
C.W. McCall - Convoy - 1975
Cheap Trick - The Flame - 1988
David Soul - Don't Give Up On Us - 1977
Falco - Rock Me Amadeus - 1986
Irene Cara - Flashdance...What a Feeling - 1983
John Denver - Thank God I'm A Country Boy - 1975
Lorne Greene - Ringo - 1964
Los Del Rio - Macarena - 1996
Mary MacGregor - Torn Between Two Lovers - 1976
Melanie - Brand New Key - 1971
Milli Vanilli - (Girl) I'm Gonna Miss You - 1989
Olivia Newton-John - Have You Never Been Mellow - 1975
Paul Anka with Odia Coates - (You're) Having My Baby - 1974
Phil Collins - Sussudio - 1985
Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up - 1988
Starland Vocal Band - Afternoon Delight - 1976
Styx - Babe - 1979
Terry Jacks - Seasons In the Sun - 1974
Toni Basil - Mickey - 1982
Will to Power - Baby, I Love Your Way / Freebird Medley (Free Baby) - 1988

If Lorne Greene is in it, then William Shatner's version of "Rocket Man" (we've already heard his version of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds) should be on it.
On a side note: apparently Shatner was such a jerk on the set of Star Trek to everyone that he isn't invited to George Takai's wedding to his partner.

Hey! I remember "Ringo" as a kid; I loved it!

These are not hits from hell, imho. Well, maybe Lorne Greene and Ringo, but one does not mess with Ben Cartwright.
ETA: OK, definitely Ringo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0V7ILiXurQg However, it will come in handy next time one of you puts together a treasure hunt -- how many songs have the word 'varmit' in the lyrics?

Of those four, only "Ringo" hasn't already been in a HFH set, so I included them. I don't even think the John Denver is a Turkey, and that's certainly the worst Melanie & Falco are imho.

Takei has a very funny cameo in Zohan, which is about the least obvious & over the top laugh in the whole movie.
-
sounds like a '70s-centric set in store. Shatner is TOTHK, covering Sinatra. ("shatner" is, of course, the past tense of "shitner".)

and no argument that this takes "bad" to a whole. new. level. But everything else will seem bearable by comparison.

what's the story? This wasn't a hit. Missed the opening; did he announce rules?
-
Seasons in the Sun, this was a hit. A Katrina HFH?
-
Bit of a Hanna Montana backlash?

he said he was "throwing out the rulebook" because someone made a strong case for Shatner.
OMFG! Billy ray Cyrus and some new HFH blood! A welcome bustout. So... how many powerful gay producers in H'wood did he sleep with to give his daughter a career?
-
Perhaps redundant to give WOS votes, but I'll give one to Billy Ray. (My office-mate: "Oh, this is Miley's dad!")
-
Bit of a Hanna Montana backlash?
probably -- see my comments above. I liked this record at the time -- for what it is, it's actually quite clever and catchy. Unfortunately he had to actually, y'know, go on stage and perform and then it was obvious how limited his talent was.
-
Don't be a cluck! the duck's gettin "down" -- GET IT? Oy.
-
Bit of a Hanna Montana backlash?
pretty HFH-ish, with or without a backlash!
-

Disco Duck is just plain painful!
-
as always I protest "We Built This City"'s inclusion -- one of the most unfairly maligned songs, like, ever.
-
I'll continue to rep for "We Built This City" as a fun song that would be warmly remembered if it had been done by some smart-ass one-offs like the Flying Lizards or Boys Don't Cry. BOS, nyah!

I remember hearing this at Candlestick during a game; great setting!

I have to admit I agree with the above comments -- this song never bothered me the way it does for SO many folks...
-
Debbie Boone! You Light Up My Life
666 indeed!
-
worst of the worst -- Debbie Boone. It isn't even well-produced.
-
Light Up My Life: hellish pain AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhhrrrrrrrr!!!
-
some HFH I can't identify: "Don't Give Up On Us Baby"
-
yay! David Soul!

Dude! it was a #1 hit!!

Aforementioned officemate had never heard of "You Light Up My Life" before. She's giggling now. "Don't Give Up On Us" is eliciting a similar reaction from her.
-
Light Up My Life: hellish pain AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhhrrrrrrrr!!!
I hated this song the moment I heard it when I was 14. Guess I can't change my avatar back just yet.
BOS to David Soul, another famous Lutheran.

LOVE the avatar choice for this, dude. Is that Donna Reed wincing?

not in my universe! ;D ;D

BOS Meri Wilson! Do lolly lolly!
details? another one out of my galaxy.
-
some HFH I can't identify: "Don't Give Up On Us Baby"
Dude! it was a #1 hit!!
With the obvious exception of the Shatner, and the possible exception of Rick Dees, everything else has been a #1 hit. And Debbie Boone, Billy Ray Cyrus & the expected Los Del Rio were all #1 for the year!
-

"Disco Duck" was #1 for at least a month -- possibly longer (in NYC it was #1 for 6 weeks, iirc) But Billy Ray only got to #4 pop (tho' I'm sure it was #1 country)

I'm not sure about the BRC. But the Dees Nuts was, and "Afternoon Delight" is yet another #1.

Just some generic 50's lady.
Afternoon Delight: from summer of 1976 hell (along with Disco Duck)
-
This one I know! Afternoon Delight. I wonder who did the pedal steel/skyrockets?

She just turned 30. And is more of an indie chick. (She introduced me to Of Montreal long ago.)
-
Dang, missed the first 30 minutes of Hell. BOS for Telephone Man.
I love the video for Afternoon Delight. All these ordinary folks singing about sex. Subversive! ;)
-
Worst diction of set: "workin' up a appetite."
-
Aaaack Lovin You! I have to turn off radio for 3 minutes.
-
This is unfair to Minnie Ripperton. Bless her soul.

More sex, and another #1, but it seems a bit cruel to make fun of the late Minnie Riperton. (The ceaselessly chirping birds were a bit much.)
-
yay! David Soul!
complete with '70's "molester mustache"
-

Love Minnie, hate the song.

another unfairly dissed tune: the great Minnie Riperton.
-
I didn't know "Disco Duck" was divided into Parts I and II.

Sure, in hell you'll hear it on an endless loop

not to be confused with a "porn star moustache" like Jason Giambi's new 'stache.
-
re: Minnie
I have an old Rotary Connection LP, as well as her followup LP to Lovin' You. Good stuff.

ah, but the version on South Park by "John Stamos' brother" was truly hellish.

A great hellish set. BOS Disco Duck! Never heard Telephone and it was odd. Minnie = good, Loving You = Bad.

A great hellish set. BOS Disco Duck! Never heard Telephone and it was odd. Minnie = good, Loving You = Bad.
"Telephone man" was a big fave at my college radio station -- we were a bunch of Top 40 geeks. It only got to #18 on the charts, making it the least "hit" of the HFHs today (not counting non-hit Shatner).
Bonus: "Kung Fu Fighting" , revived by Kung Fu Panda. Here comes the big boss!

This was a really great set for originality. Meri Wilson, Minnie Ripperton & Billy Ray 'Montana' were all artist bustouts. The Shatner tune was a bustout also, but not Bill himself, we got "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" back in '02.
Actually in the previous 6 HFH sets in the Db*, only one tune is hellish enough to have appeared more than twice. Any guesses?
*in fact there are 7, but one was specifically a Christmas HFH. Those 6 sets include 2 HFH VT's & 1 'When Good Artists Go Bad'.

Wasn't this song supposed to be retired from HFH?

From what I understand, Dave played "Ringo" early this morning (a buddy who works early told me). The english AND french versions (Lorne was Canadian).
