Title: The Sound (LA), 4/3/09 - 1971, not '79
Post by: mshray on April 03, 2009, 10:01:01 AM
I think it must be '79, Floyd don't need no education.

Oops, that was the song before the set, which is only kicking of at 10:04 today.

Yay for Larry!

Too many hungry people losing weight!

From the underappreciated Ram album--still wish someone would bust out Smile Away from this record--great effin' bloody tune.

(Just realized I was getting a bit loose with the f-bombs there.)

Hey Mike, in your NYC days did you ever get to The Levee, or was already gone then?

Having a whiskey and rye there would have been a pilgrimage for me.

Is rye even stocked at bars anymore?  I'm wondering what kind of looks I'd get if I walked into a bar and asked for a whiskey & rye.

Neither are close to being rarities, but Mercy Mercy Me and Changes still sound pretty great.

And without Changes, Flight of the Conchords would lose half their act.

Yes, "I went down to The Levee, but The Levee was dry", meaning out of hooch.

BOS to Carly Simon, "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be."  One of the most haunting records I've ever heard.

Take me down, Little Susie, take me down....

There's a local musician who goes by the name Little Sue who is completely bankrupt in the talent department, but somehow always manages to get asked onstage whenever the Minus 5 play. Driving me crazy, I tellya.

Another great nugget from Carly Simon, which DM has played to great effect in the last year or so.

And one for the Gaz-man: Never Been to Spain.

DM's played a good share of 3DN, but I don't think he's Been to Spain either.

ETA: I'd forgotten that this, like Joy to the World, is another Hoyt Axton comp. They sure boosted his bank balance in '71--two HUGE hits both from his pen.

"In the Summertime" is a cruel joke to hear as I watch sheets of rain outside my window before a slate-grey sky.  I think Friday Funtime will be an all-"rain" set today.

It's also in the wrong year -- it's from 1970.

Answer to the follow up Love Story trivia:  Not only did Tommy Lee Jones (whose film debut was as Ryan O'Neils roommate) actually go to Harvard where his real roommate was Al Gore.  Just like in the movie they lived in a 'quad', and another of the roommates was none other than author Erich Segal.  When he wrote the book (which was a HUGE best-seller before being made into a film) he based O'Neill's Oliver character loosely on Gore (remember, his father was a Senator & very wealthy) and Tommy Lee's character was loosely based on...Tommy Lee!

Furthermore Erich Segal went on to become a professor of literature at Harvard.

When I was in 6th or 7th grade (70-71), there was a tattered copy of Love Story that got passed surreptitiously from kid to kid in our class. Made our 11-year-old hearts go pitter-pat. Or something like that.

I've been listening to the Love Story theme way too much in recent weeks.  "How long does it last?  Can love be measured by the hours in a day?  I have no answers now, but this much I can say: I know I'll need her till the stars burn away.  And she'll be there ..."

Rich, were are ya?

Hi Mark.  Hey, I finally figured out what you meant on the KFOG 10@10 thread today, about giving me a shout.

I hadn't ever checked out this 'alternate universe' 10@10 thread (or online stream) before.  Definitely 1971 beat 1992 (or whatever year it was on KFOG) today.  Yes!!
